Roles and Functions The functions of management in a healthcare setting would be planning, organizing, staffing, controlling, directing, and decision making. In order for a manager to plan in a healthcare setting this requires the manager to set a direction and determine what needs to be accomplished within the organization which involves being able to select priorities and determine how those results will be achieved. Organizing in the healthcare setting the manager will be focused on the overall design of the organization for which the manager is responsible. The manager will determine positions, the teamwork assignments, and distribution of authority and responsibility which are critical components. After all, organizing deals with allocating and configuring resources in order to be able to accomplish any goals that are being set by that manager. When it comes to staffing the manager is developing and maintaining the workforce through various strategies and tactics. As a manager you are leading to show other employees to follow your lead and direction in order for them to be able to take on their responsibilities yet along move forward within the company. Controlling involves the manager monitoring the staff activities and performance while taking the appropriate actions for corrective action to increase performance. Directing gives the manager the ability to focus on initiating action in the organization through effective leadership and motivation of, and communication with subordinates. While decision making involves the manager to make effective decisions based on consideration of benefits and the drawbacks of alternatives.
