A health care organization is a collection of people working together to achieve a common purpose related to health issues. This collaborative effort permits the completion of tasks that could not be accomplished by any individual for the most effective organization and customer outcome. Today’s health care organization can take a variety of forms; from small out-patient clinics, networks of health care specialists, too large for-profit research hospitals, or private physician offices. Roles and Scope In every health care organization, each level of management has specific roles, expectations, and duties that encourage and promote a high quality, diverse work environment as demonstrated through successful operations and outcomes. In any health care organization, everyone, but especially the manager must respond to and adapt to change in organizational direction required by the need of the patient population it serves. Managers must be accountable for, not only decision-making, but productivity, cost containment, safety, and confidentiality. Major Functions of Management Health care managers can have a variety of titles, but managers share common traits: organizing, planning, controlling, and leading. Managers organize by arranging task, people, and other resources to accomplish work. Managers have to plan by setting performance objectives and deciding how to achieve organization goals. The third method of management is controlling. Managers control by measuring work performance and compare results to objectives. Leading is the final function of management. Leading includes building commitments, build enthusiasm, and encourage activities for the staff.
