Mitt Romney introduces Paul Ryan as his vice president. Refers to the man as a “strong and caring leader that is down to earth, and confident in the challenge this moment demands.” Romney reminds the audience that freedom is what first made America special. He makes an attempt to win hearts and minds by referencing small businesses and graduating students. He implies that Obama made promises of hope and change but did not follow through with them. “This was when we were supposed to start paying down the national debt and rolling back those massive deficits. This is the hope and change America voted for. It’s not just what we wanted. It’s not just what we expected. It’s what Americans deserved!” Romney exclaims. Just then the crowd begins to chant U.S.A. Romney talks of his childhood, and how he was a “baby boomer” in the middle of the country, reminds the crowd of Neil Armstrong’s walk on the moon, Talks of his mother giving up giving up her acting career to marry his father. He tells us he grew up in a Morman family in Michigan. “My mom and dad were married for 64 years, and if you wondered what their secret was you could have asked the local florist, because every day Dad gave Mom a rose which he put on her bedside table. That’s how she found out what happened on the day my father died. She went looking for him because that morning there was no rose. My mom and dad were true partners,” Romney says. The camera then cuts to a couple older women holding back tears from his heartfelt story. He has always supported women in politics, Romney goes on to say. He talks of community, family and faith, and how it brings us strength. He gives the example of his church to support his point that Americans are always there for one another. He tells the crowd that the best feeling they had for Barrack Obama was the day we voted for him, but he hasn’t done anything to improve our lives since he was elected. “The president has disappointed America because he hasn’t led America in the right direction,” Romney tells us. He says Obama failed because he has very little experience with business. Romney talks of a business he started with just ten people many years ago, and how his investments have grown into well known companies like Staples, The Sports Authority, Bright Horizons, and Steel Dynamics. Romney says Obama has led the worst economic recovery since the great depression because he attacks success. “In America we celebrate success,” he exclaims. Romney implies that Obama is the worst president since Jimmy Carter. “Now is the time to restore the promise of America,” he exclaims Twenty five minutes into Romney’s speech he finally begins to talk about some sort of economic resolution when he says that America needs jobs. He talks of the rising prices on day to day products and the increase in poverty. He says Obama’s plan to raise taxes on small businesses will eliminate jobs, and his plan to tax coal, gas, and oil companies will send energy jobs overseas. Romney has a valid point in saying this because taxing these big companies will cause their profits to decrease and if their profits decrease they will be forced to save money on labor which they would likely do by sending production to other countries. In short, if a company is unable to cut the costs of capital then they will need to cut costs on labor. Romney goes on to say that Obama’s tax cuts to the military will eliminate jobs and put our security at risk. His cut to Medicare will eliminate innovation in the medical field. Romney says, “I have a plan to create 12 million new jobs.” He says he has a five step plan to fix the economy. “First,” says, “ by 2020 America will be energy effective by taking full advantage of our oil, coal, gas, nuclear, and our “renewables”. Second, he says, “When it comes to school every parent should have a choice and every child should have a chance.” He doesn’t seem to offer any solution for improving the school system but makes the implication that he has one. He then goes onto step three. He says we will make new trade agreements. Fourth, we will cut the deficit. And finally he says we will reduce taxes on small business, and repeal and replace Obama care. He says he will honor the institution of marriage, making the implication that his is anti gay-marriage. He says Obama promises to heal the planet and slow global warming. Romney promises to help us and our families. He then makes Obama out to be too soft because we haven’t dealt with the threat of Iran’s ability to produce nuclear weapons. He says Obama has failed to support for our allies such as Israel and Poland. Romney gave a 37 minute and 27 second long speech which had very little to do with economics and was more an attempt to get the audience to “Believe” in him. He made a much greater attempt to appeal to our emotions than our minds. Ninety-nine percent of Romney’s speech was made up of opinions, stories of his life, and the attacking of Obama’s policies. I would have liked to hear far more economic solutions from him.
