...Being a hero is not something everyone can be. One has to make sacrifices for the better of others. If one is not willing to make sacrifices, they are not strong enough to be a hero. Specific heroes are hard to find. Khaled Hosseini’s “The Kite Runner”, revolves around characters portraying heroism. Although the story revolves around many characters showcasing the theme of heroism, the character that has been the hero throughout the story is Hassan. This is proved by the sacrifices Hassan made for Amir, Hassan accepting his mother back into his life and Hassan protecting Baba’s house after he left to America. Firstly, Hassan is the true hero of the story because he was constantly there for Amir. Hassan was loyal and was willing to do anything for Amir: “For you a thousand times over!” (Hosseini, 71). This quote specifically portrays that Hassan was willing to do anything for Amir, as he said he will do anything a thousand times over for him. This is a powerful quote because this exemplifies Hassan being heroic through his loyalty for Amir. Hassan also was willing to do anything for Amir without expecting anything back from. Hassan also proved his heroism when he stood up for Amir against Assef: “If you make a move, they’ll have to change your nickname from ‘Assef the Ear Eater’ to ‘One Eyed Assef’, because I have this rock pointed at your left eye” (Hosseini, 45). This quote portrays Hassan’s heroism because Hassan stood up against Assef. Amir was being threatened...

...is the true definition of bravery and heroism. This story recaptures Beowulf's quest as he destroys monsters that terrorize the kingdom of Herot and the people who subside within it. Throughout the story vivid imagery and detailed monologue help upholds the story to an epic quality. But, for for it to truly to be an epic it must have a few needed elements such as references to god and battles between good and evil. A moment in Beowulf that truly captures this epic mentality can be found near the end of the story. Beowulf is out of his youth and is living in his old age as king. He along with some of his geats are set up outside the cave, where a diabolical dragon awaits to destroy anyone in sight. Beowulf stands up and begins his great final speech to his geats, unweary what there future holds.(2510-2510) This moment adds so much momentum to the story and so the way it embodies Beowulf as a story and a character. This moment shines above the rest and fully demonstrates the elements of bravery, self-sacrifice, and overall heroism. Of all the things Beowulf is, Beowulf is the true definition of bravery. He demonstrates this in many different ways through the text but it is the most apparent in his...

...What is a hero? Join me in exploring heroism. ‘The Ballad of the Green Berets,' by Barry Sadler, is a tribute song that honors the bravery of the United States Army Air Forces during the Vietnam War. In ‘How Jackie Robinson, Wife, Rachel Helps Break Baseball Color,' by the author Chris Lamb, Rachel Robinson plays an important role in breaking the color barrier by supporting her husband and others. In Heros Chapter 8, author Comer writes a novel. In Chapter 8, Francis walks into a bar and talks to other vets about the war. These three texts similarly portray heroism by showing people doing big things—soldiers fighting in wars, Rachel Robinson's husband Jakie in baseball fighting color, and characters in a book being heroes—war vets that can help people by losing something. They all show that being a hero means bravery and sacrifice. In my first talking point, I will discuss how bravery is a key characteristic of heroism....

...his life. Although the old man was sick and aged, an offering like so portrays such heroism due to the sacrifice and (reason two) that the action was against his life. For example, if this man were sacrificing his hunger for others to let people eat, it would not be very heroic. Although, this old man is giving up his life for the others and putting the people over himself making this the most heroic action. The least heroic action was with the rocket takeoff in situation B. One reason why is because there is nothing accomplished for others nor the school teacher it is about. When the rocket takes off there is hope of a heroic action becoming of itself, but only death comes. Another reason this is the least heroic situation is because the action that occurs to cause the death of this human (invitation to space shuttle) is not relevant nor meaningful to how a hero would perform. Raymond chose F as the most heroic situation. He is wrong because this is just a basic scheme of saving others but real heroism comes from sacrifice (which does not occur here) and actual change from the situation accomplishment. With F, the man achieves and sacrifices little allowing for a large contrast in true heroism from situation H. The basic definition of a heroic act is a courageous form of achievement through sacrifice. Two basic characteristics that must be present to make it heroic is (as I said) sacrifice and accomplishment. Without the success of a goal or the loss of a trait/object through...

...Hinton. The Outsiders was a big deal back in the ‘60s because it started teen-realistic fiction. This book demonstrated heaps of true heroism in many of the characters. A hero, in my opinion, shows responsibility, bravery, and sacrifice. Johnny Cade most suits my definition of a hero. Early in the book, Johnny reveals his heroism, but he shows even stronger heroism during the middle of the book. Ponyboy, Johnny, and Dallas were eating at a Dairy Queen for the first time since Johnny and Ponyboy fled, and then Dally tells the others that Cherry is their spy and that she explained Johnny was innocent. After all, killing Bob, who nearly drowned Ponyboy, was self-defense. “We’re goin’ back and turn ourselves in,” Johnny stated [Hinton 87]. Johnny chose to do the right thing, even though he knows he might have to sacrifice the rest of his life. Johnny’s first act consists of heroism/sacrifice because he longs for what’s right, even at the cost of his future. In the next scene, Johnny further performs his heroism by being incredibly brave. He and Ponyboy ran into a burning church...

...giant who could easily overpower him and his men. Then, another aspect of heroism is the willingness to sacrifice oneself for the greater good. In the short story, The Most Dangerous Game, we see a similar situation where the crazed General Zaroff hunts the protagonist Rainsford. Rainsford is forced to use his hunting skills to survive and eventually turns the tables on Zaroff. In one scene, Rainsford sets a trap for Zaroff by creating a "Malay mancatcher" (Connell, page 9). This shows Rainsford's willingness to put himself in harm's way to defeat his enemy and survive. However, heroism is not just about physical strength and bravery. It also involves moral strength, such as standing up for what is right. In Book 12 of The Odyssey, we see Odysseus facing the danger of the Sirens. He tells his men to tie him to the mast so that he can hear their song without being tempted to jump overboard. This shows his moral strength in resisting temptation and staying true to his mission of returning home to his wife and son. In conclusion, heroism is a multifaceted concept that involves bravery, sacrifice, and moral strength. Odysseus, the protagonist of Homer's epic poem The Odyssey, exhibits these qualities throughout his journey home. His bravery in facing the Cyclops, his willingness to sacrifice himself for his men, and his moral strength in resisting the temptation of the Sirens all demonstrate his heroism. Therefore, Odysseus acted heroically on his journey. The Most Dangerous Game...

...0202 / مجلة ديالى العدد الرابع و االربعون The Bird as a Sacrificial Hero in Oscar Wilde’s “The Nightingale and the Rose” and “The Happy Prince” BY ASST. INST. Shaima’ Fadhil Hassan UNIVERSITY OF KOYA/ COLLEGE OF LANGUAGES/ DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH Heroism and sacrifice are not new concepts; they can be traced back to the early days of human life. These concepts developed throughout history as a result of the development of human thought. In literature, the idea of heroism appears on a large scale. It has been dealt with by different writers in different periods. As far as terminology is concerned, the terms of heroism and sacrifice are interchangeable. The hero must be a sacrificer and the one who sacrifices himself must be a hero, for this reason these two terms (hero and sacrificer) cannot be separated. Thus, both of them go hand in hand in so many works of literature. Heroism and sacrifice are not confined to human beings only. Some writers present their heroes as gods as in mythology, and some of them present animals as in fables. 809 0202 / مجلة ديالى العدد الرابع و االربعون The idea of having an animal as a sacrificial hero is shown in many of Oscar Wilde’s short stories. He developed this theme as a reaction towards his age which lacked, in his view, moral as well as human values. For this reason, he chooses a bird to be his tragic hero. He epitomizes this idea in such short stories like “The Nightingale and the Rose” and “The Happy Prince”....

...“When we quit thinking primarily about ourselves and our own self-preservation, we undergo a truly heroic transformation of consciousness” (Campbell Online). A hero is a person who doesn’t help others for self-recognition. Rather, a hero is someone who risks their own wellness for the welfare of others. First off, there are many types of heroes and they come in many shapes and sizes, but they all have one thing in common, they sacrifice and don't expect anything in return. “I think we all do heroic things, but hero is not a noun, it’s a verb” (Downey Jr. Online). You have to do something in order to be considered a hero. Whether it's risking your life for your country or even giving up a few minutes of your day to save a cat stuck in a tree,...

...Heroism is “when you know you’re licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do.” That is Atticus's definition of heroism from To Kill A Mockingbird. Heroism is many things but there are a few things that really show people heroism. Qualities like being able to show restraint and do what needs to be done, being able to control your gifts that you can use to help people instead of hurt them with it, or to be able to keep going even all the odds are stacked against you. Those are just a few qualities of heroism, now let's expand our horizons on these ideas. One the biggest traits of heroism is being able to show restraint, because if you don’t show restraint there isn’t many things separating you from becoming a not so great person. For example if you have a gift to be a marksmen you have an unfair advantage over every living person and if you can’t show restraint things could go horribly wrong. Along with showing restraint you have to do what needs to be done because if you had given up shooting because you would loose control of something or other you still might be the only one in the room that can deal with the...

...about itself, in acts of bravery and heroism.” A hero doesn't run from danger but takes action instead. Heros are not selfish either they try to save as much people as possible. Being a hero means being brave and selfless by putting others before oneself, sometimes it does not mean a perfect storybook ending. They inspire us to be our best we can possibly be. Heros are sacrificial and put others before himself. Heroes should be brave and sacrifice for the common good and put others before themselves. One example would be soldiers sacrificing ther time and lives for their country. “While fighting for his country he lost an arm“ (S.B. pg. 56). He was dedicated to serving in the army to protect his country. Nelson Mandel was one to sacrifice for his people. He said “Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people.” He sacrificed for...

...to something bigger than oneself ”. Campbell’s quote perfectly describes the ideal hero through their bravery and sacrifice. The Iliad, an Epic by Homer, describes an ancient Greek war between the Achaean army and the Trojan army ten years before the fall of Troy. A brave Achaean warrior, Achilles, is known for being well-respected and feared by his enemies. He leads his men into action with much ferocity and bravery. Outside of literature, Malala Yousafzai, a young Pakistani, received the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts on promoting education for women in the Middle East. She became a target by the Taliban because she was a role model for women controlled by the Taliban which they did not like. In Homer’s epic poem, The Iliad, the protagonist Achilles most closely fits the canon of “a hero”, as portrayed by Malala in her speech as a person who puts others before themselves, because they both risked their lives for the sake of another and they both were compassionate even towards their enemies....

...Heroism in the Twin Towers | | | 1) One reason as to why some people act heroically in emergencies while others do not is based on the fact that heroic people possess positive morals and traits (Johnson, 2012). Furthermore, those people that possess positive morals and traits make good choices and will respond to a situation immediately (Johnson, 2012). In the case study, Heroism in the Twin Towers, the rescuers displayed positive morals and traits by using crowbars to break through drywall and opening stairway doors in order to reach out and help the victims escape being fully aware that at any given moment they could have injured themselves in the process (Johnson, 2012). Another reason as to why some people act heroically in emergencies while others do not is based on the fact that heroic people have a high moral identity where moral principles and character traits are the core of their being (Johnson, 2012). Furthermore, people with a high moral identity have a positive approach to life as well as a strong desire to do the right thing demonstrating will power and integrity to help others in need (Johnson, 2012). In the case study, Heroism in the Twin Towers, the rescuers displayed the most notable case of a high moral identity as they were willing to sacrifice their life so that the victims can live (Johnson, 2012). 2) The type of characteristic traits that the rescuers demonstrated in rescuing the victims from the Twin Tower attacks were courage, determination...

...Heroes come in many forms, although some may see heroism in different ways, everyone can agree veterans carry the traits of true heroes. Heroism is defined as doing something to help others without expecting anything in return. Many people could be described as heroes, and my Grandpa is one example. My Grandpa, Andrew Joseph Schemenaur, was a hero because of the vital role he had in the Marines and the way he sacrificed two years of his life to serve his country. He turned eighteen on September tenth and he left for the service September thirtieth the year after he graduated high school, which happened to be right at the end of World War II. Grandpa Andy was a true hero. Sacrifices are often made by heroes to help others, and my Grandpa sacrificed two years of his life and relationships with people to help serve his country. Right after high school he got up and left to go to Camp Lejeune, leaving everything he had behind to help...

...story, it is made known that Beowulf lives with a fatalistic mindset that everyone is going to eventually die. Having these beliefs helps Beowulf to approach his life and death situations with less fear; however, this also leads to Him making decisions that normal people would not make. Having so much courage and loyalty for his tribe, Beowulf decides to fight the dragon. Having arrived and realizing how outmatched they were, the nine men who came along had quickly vanished and it was all up to Beowulf and Wiglaf. ...Odysseus is a captain, above all. One who is in command, who must make important decisions. Now, though some of these decisions may have resulted in the death of his crew mates, I think it is important to consider his heroism in other areas of his life. From being the man who brought about the destruction of the Trojans during war time to his many warnings to his crew of the dangers of their journey, his heroics have far outweighed his villainous acts. It is hard for me to say, but sacrifices needed to be made, and he did what he could to bring his men home, however unsuccessfully he did so. First up, we have the making of the Trojan Horse. Athena, favoring Odysseus, came to him and instructed him to create a giant wooden horse to trick the...
