Have you ever seen a sky full of stars with nature’s melody playing as your background music? There are many beautiful places in the world where you can enjoy such a view, but in my point of view, there is no other place like Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is a city that was an unfamiliar territory for me. It was a place that I believed would be scary and cold. However, as I made my way through this “scary forest” I found that it was actually a peaceful and beautiful place. Just imagine that while walking through the streets of Santa Cruz, you see orange, yellow and green leaves fall from the trees as a soft wind hits your skin making you feel connected to nature. What seemed to be a dangerous place to explore became a place with many beautiful

Predictive Policing

...Term Paper: Predictive Policing Sherrell Hall Dr. Kaali Dass CIS-500: Information System Decision Making April 21, 2014 When one thinks of predictive policing, what does he or she think about? Some may think it’s a way for police officers to know of a crime that’s going to take place. Others may think a group of policeman will gather together and come up with predictions on what crime is going to take place next and where. While both statements are somewhat true, let’s take a look at what predictive policing is and compare and contrast the application of information technology to optimize police departments’ performance to reduce crime versus random patrols of the streets. We’ll also take a look at COMPSTAT, define it, and discuss the basic IS functions in addition to how it allows police departments to respond to crime faster. In addition to COMPSTAT and its functions, we’ll discuss the SWOT analysis. Part I: Compare and Contrast the application of information technology (IT) to optimize police departments’ performance to reduce crime versus random patrols of the streets. Predictive policing is “taking data from disparate sources, analyzing them and then using the results to anticipate, prevent, and respond more effectively to future crime” (Pearsall, 2010). In other words, predictive policing is analyzing all of the data from crimes and using it to predict when the next crime(s) will occur. This is proven to decrease the crime rate. For instance, in Santa Cruz, California...

In 1994, the New York City Police Department adopted a law enforcement crime fighting strategy known as COMPSTAT (COMPuter STATistics). COMPSTAT uses Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map the locations of where crimes occur, identify “ hotspots”, and map problem areas. COMPSTAT has amassed a wealth of historical crime data. Mathematicians have designed and developed algorithms that run against the historical data to predict future crimes for police departments. This is known as predictive policing. Predictive policing has led to a drop in burglaries, automobile thefts, and other crimes in some cities. Write a four to five (4-5) page paper in which you: 1. Compare and contrast the application of information technology (IT) to optimize police departments’ performance to reduce crime versus random patrols of the streets. 2. Zoos

...Are Zoos Unethical to Animals? Name Institution Zoos are Unethical to Animals Recently, contentious debates have risen over the ethical dilemma that zoos pose regarding animals’ rights, freedoms and natural behavior. Many people consider zoos amoral and cruel while others have the notion that they are ethical because they help in research, conservation and proper treatment of wild animals. This sensitive topic has induced different reactions and sparked great debates as people strive to do the right thing. According to Tuyl (2008), Zoos are enclosed spaces and cages that abode animals. Hutchins and Keele (2006), argue that, zoos provide excellent conditions for wild animals, as they are liberated from their natural habitats, which are harsh and unforgiving. They argue that wild animals are better placed in the zoos because they are provided with free meals and a life that is free from parasites, and harsh weather and predators. However, there are various reasons that explain why zoos are unethical. This paper explains why zoos are unethical to animals. To confine wild animals in enclosed spaces, denies them freedom and the ability to develop their natural behaviors. In addition, zoos promote the transmission of zoonotic diseases (Tuyl, 2008). Therefore, concerning animal rights and freedoms, zoos are highly unethical and should be banned to endow wild animals with an opportunity to lead lives free from human interferences. It is amoral to keep animals in the...

Principal Leadership

...Chapter I The Problem and Its Scope An institutions' success is measured by its administration and achievements. Therefore, administrations need efficient leaders to take them toward that success. In this sense, leadership style is one of the main factors determining the effectiveness of any leader. Leadership style reflects a manager or leader's personality and how he or she manages work, which affects the performance of institutions as well as employees (Lwasif, 1995). However, Subramaniam (2011) pointed out the importance of studying leadership styles because of its significance in an institution's success. Educational process is to achieve its goals, it needs teachers with high motivation. At the same time, teachers need support to increase their satisfaction and motivation, and this will come about through principals' effective leadership style (Johnson, 2007). The purpose of the study is to know how some principals prefer embracing certain leadership styles and the effects it has on teachers motivation. It is also to find outcome of desired leadership style by the principal towards achieving the school goals. It is of good interest to know the reaction of teachers to the principal whether negative or positive. It is also aimed to determine the relationship between teachers motivation and the leadership style of the principal. Further, the extent to which the various leadership approaches adopted by elementary school principals has influenced the teaching learning...

Chemers, Li-tze Hu, and Ben F. Garcia University of California, Santa Cruz A longitudinal study of lst-year university student adjustment examined the effects of academic self-efficacy and optimism on students' academic performance, stress, health, and commitment to remain in school. Predictor variables (high school grade-point average, academic self-efficacy, and optimism) and moderator variables (academic expectations and self-perceived coping ability) were measured at the end of the first academic quarter and were related to classroom performance, personal adjustment, stress, and health, measured at the end of the school year. Academic self-efficacy and optimism were strongly related to performance and adjustment, both directly on academic performance and indirectly through expectations and coping perceptions (challenge-threat evaluations) on classroom performance, stress, health, and overall satisfaction and commitment to remain in school. Observed relationships corresponded closely to the hypothesized model. Change can be unsettling. The transition from high school to college can place significant demands on young adults (Tinto, 1982,1993). College life can be demanding and stressful for a...

Animal Rights Activism: a Domestic Terror Threat

...Joel Schwartz Final Paper - Draft 7/16/12 Professor Hoge English 1020 Animal Rights Activism: A Domestic Terror Threat Throughout the past two decades, extreme animal rights groups have claimed responsibility for hundreds of crimes and acts of terrorism, including arson, bombings, vandalism, burglary, animal release, and harassment. These crimes have caused damage costing more than one hundred million dollars. While some activists have been captured, animal rights terrorism cells, are extremely difficult to identify and most of the attacks remain unsolved. Although it has been overshadowed by Islamic terrorist threats since September 11, animal rights terrorism still remains one of the United State’s most active terrorist movements. This paper intends to explore the Animal Rights terrorist movement and prove that Animal Rights activists pose a significant domestic terror threat. An increasing number of terrorist activity in the United States has been carried out in the name of animal protection. Although no one has been killed in an attack, the increasingly violent nature of attacks suggests that someone will be proclaimed dead before long. Beginning in the 1970s, hundreds of groups in the United States have advocated for much stricter legal protection for animals. Change has been slow but incremental. Some activists have become frustrated by the pace of legislation, and have become violent. This violence has created an underground terrorist movement...

History of Gals Bakery

...History of GALS BAKERY In the 1960's, an enterprising man of modest means, Mr. Galileo Ancajas, dreamt of owning his business. While working for a paper product company, he bought and sold bread to his co-workers to augment his income. Gifted with a keen business instinct, he saw the opportunity to set up his own bakery. With almost no technical know-how in running the business, he slowly learned the ropes, with a few hits and misses through hard work, determination and the support of his better half, Remedios. Thus, in 1965, the first GAL's BAKERY was established in Tipolo, Mandaue City, Cebu. Starting on a 30 sq.m. space with a handful of employees, the home spun venture soon became a flourishing business with the opening of more bakery outlets to cater to a wider, diverse market. With more stores to handle, family members soon gave their share in helping the business thrive. A son-in law, Bill Gayatin, undertook the research and development by coming up with tasty and reasonably priced baked products on a regular basis, further beefing up the product line-up of GAL'S BAKERY to as much as 108 baked products. The family would have been just content in keeping the GAL'S BAKERY network in Cebu and selected cities in Visayas and Mindanao. However, events would soon unfold GAL'S was meant for more growth. A long-time friend of the family introduced GAL'S BAKERY to Lorna Tolentino and her friends, who at that time, were looking for a new business venture to set up in Manila....
