BACKGROUND BRIEF The Lottery Scam “Advance fee fraud on the internet is a current epidemic that rakes in hundreds of millions of dollars per year. The advent of the internet and proliferation of its use in the 1990s makes it an attractive medium for communicating the fraud, enabling a worldwide reach.”1 Advance Fee Fraud gets its name from the fact that an investor is asked to pay a fee 2 up front or in advance of receiving any proceeds, money etc. These types of scams are not unique to Jamaica and in fact have existed in other parts of the world for some time, as evident from the signature by member and non-member States of the Council of Europe of the Convention on Cybercrime in Budapest, on 23 November 2001, long before this became a major issue for Jamaica. In 1999, the Jamaican Government initiated the liberalization of the telecommunications industry with full liberalization taking effect in March 2003. Since then there has been a...

...Being a Whistle Blower To some the word whistleblower just sounds like a bad thing to be called. So what is a whistle blower you may ask? A whistleblower is a person who informs on a person or an organization engaged in an illicit activity. So what are the pro to being a whistleblower, better yet what are the cons as well? Some of the pros are that the person who is a whistleblower is a courageous individual who recognize a wrong and are willing to take risks in order to see that the wrongs are corrected. “Personal gratification isn’t the only benefit of becoming a whistleblower though. The amount that the relator can receive most often ranges from 15% to 30% depending on whether the government intervenes in the case or not. The whistle blower will also receive 10 to 30 percent of the monies the SEC and other government authorities collect based on the whistleblower’s information if more than $1 million is collected.” (Pros and Cons of Becoming a Whistleblower) This is what most people that are whistleblowers go for. Most people don’t care about what is the right thing to do in a case but instead what the pay out may be at the end of the tunnel. The people like this are the people that don’t deserve to have a job and need to just become hermits because no one wants any one like that working for them or around them. Lets talk cons now. “Filing a qui tam or whistleblower suit is not for the light-hearted. In addition to the stress and anxiety associated with reporting a fraud...

...limits of stealing amounts of weapons or drugs. Bank robberies require admins approval, and the admin must watch the bank robbery to administer the roleplay etc. There must be 30 police officers online, admins must be informed how you plan on doing the robbery. There is no roof entry to the bank. As soon as weapons are pulled out in the bank, silent alarms will wring and either your or the admin would PM a PD officer of the robbery. Robberies are not allowed to happen in certain areas (e.g police department, or city hall, airport, mall etc.) because it would be not RP to rob people in an area where officers would most likely be. Unless the robber leads the victim to an acceptable area, the consequence for this would be admin jail. Scamming can only be done ICly, and the scammers can only take up to $50,000 worth of goods or money unless admins approve on taking further. The scammer and the victim must be levels 10 or higher. House, business and vehicle scams are not allowed - the result of ignoring these rules can be admin jails and return of all goods, or a ban for severe cases. The punishment for robbery can also result in an admin jail. Rape is not allowed unless both people agree OOCly to do...

...It is important to remember that oftentimes family has a great impact on who a child becomes as they age. Gary Gilmore was brought up by a dysfunctional family. His family had a rather corrupted history. Both his mother and father did not have the greatest life as young children, and this reflected when they had children of their own. As a younger child and as a young woman, Bessie would often make sure to violate the rules her parents had in their home by coming home late, kissing boys, and buying an Ouija Board. Bessie and her mother would continuously argue, and her father had a short temper himself (although he took a particular liking to Bessie). Also, Bessie’s parents did not approve of Frank as he was much older than she was. Frank,...

...laziness and self absorbed behaviors which weighed heavily on company production as well as company time. Their bad habits not only put a burden on the company’s pocket book, but easily influenced new employees to do the same and angered the ones willing to put forth the effort. The implications of the Sheehy’s work ethic study describes a grim outcome for the future of American businesses. Much of America’s younger generation lack the initiative and strong work ethics of their older predecessors. The young people of today expect things to be handed to them and often lack the self integrity to do what is fair and right. Mr. Sheehy happened to explain these individuals’ behavior best with one word, “Scamming.” The definition of the word is nothing short of what is actually depicted. Their means for...

...Related Stories A Nigerian internet fraudster known as the ‘king of dating’ for his sophisticated tactics of online manipulation has given an eye-opening confession at a Lagos-based church. Samuel Johnson, an Edo State indigene, explained that his journey into advanced internet scamming began in The University of Port Harcourt after he joined the ‘Black-Axe’ cult. “I followed them into a very thick forest during the night of initiation,” the young man narrated. He was just 19 years old at the time. “We reached a place where there was a candle and a coffin encircled by 50 young men. They tortured us with canes until we started bleeding. They then cut my tongue on a razor blade and gave me something to drink.” The quiet, intelligent student changed drastically from that day onward. “It was like I had two people living inside me,” he recalled. “I became very aggressive. I had this strength to want to steal and started stealing from people. I also started smoking and drinking excessively. Anytime I drank, it’s like I became stronger.” A cult friend into online fraud, soon egged him into joining. However, for Samuel, there was a strange, spiritual element to his deceptive tricks, widely known in Ghana as 'sakawa'. “There was a spirit inside me that kept teaching me. I was not just any fraudster; I learned it from meditating on it. It was inbuilt. Even if I walked into a room and money was kept there, I would know where to find it.” Starting by procuring foreign sim-cards...

...English 101-05 17 March 2014 Technology in the World In today’s world importance in learning has been eliminated. Cell phones are a major distraction in all places. Students play games, tweet, or do anything not to pay attention to their teacher. Cell phones start out being a distraction with junior high schools when they get them for certain occasions down to adults that work/go to school. It is a bigger problem with college students because it is a higher education level. College students use their phones to cheat, disrespect the teacher, or just to have something to play with during the class. Some professors try to ban phone use in their classroom but it does not firmly enforced. Students pull out their phones as soon as the teacher turns he/he back to the class. Students feel like if they have the notes in hand or the information is irrelevant to them, then they don’t need to listen to the lecture. Sometimes playing on cell phones makes the class time pass faster. Cell phones are like computers or television to some people. When students are walking, they are not paying attention because they are looking down at their phone. In the classroom when a student is on their phone, it is a distraction to those around them. If another student has something interesting on the screen of their phone, others tend to take their attention to that phone. No matter how much a teacher rant about not using cell phones during class, a student will find an opportunity to use their phone...

...In chapters 24-30 of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain, there is a clear theme of morals influencing one’s actions as events become more personal. Huck understands that the the duke and dauphin are dishonest men, but he does not think much about it; they are, at first, scamming random, gullible people who Huck has no connection with. However, Huck quickly becomes disgusted by their actions when they begin to scam the Wilks family. When the king and duke begin to sob, Huck fells “it was enough to make a body ashamed of the human race” (235). Their actions now stick out to Huck as this act is more personal unlike their previous antics; the Wilks are in mourning over a lost family member and are in a vulnerable state, yet the frauds...

...correct? People at home clearly felt the ramifications of this war because it changed their social, economic, and political policies. Although citizens willingly devoted and supplied resources to fight this war, this article emphasized that they did not support the war enough (Gienapp, 190). In 1864, northerners wanted everyone to devote their financial resources to the war in order to transform the war into a total war to finally end the war. Northerners believed that they would only succeed when individuals willingly to do anything necessary, including sacrifice their social and economic happiness, to win the war. Furthermore, some individuals got so caught up in their personal economic prosperities that they would do anything, including scamming the government, to make more money (Gienapp, 192). Northerners damaged their personal character as well as the entire nation’s character because of their desires to gain economic advancements (Gienapp, 193). This dishonest and selfish behavior jeopardized the North’s character and so, why were individuals’ characters so important? Northerners believed that only honest, courageous, loyal, and strong people succeeded in society. This article seems to suggest that individuals will be rewarded with success as long as they “do the right thing.” However, this article emphasized that people should be more conscientious because the war was unpredictable, destructive, and dangerous. Individuals believed that people at home needed to live a humble...

With in this area, thousands of low income immigrants had settled looking for work and housing to survive in this new country.
