...Bullying in Schools Victoria Cottongin Monday March 31, 2014 Abstract This is a paper on bullying in schools. It will give suggestions of ways for schools to convey awareness. This paper will also include some suggestions on how to stop bullying in schools by establishing certain consequences for students and parents. Bullying in Schools Sandy, an overweight teen whose family was not financially sound, was sitting at the lunch table all by herself when part of the “A” list group started throwing Twinkies at her and making pig noises. Later that evening when Sandy logged on to her Facebook account, it had been hacked. In the place of her cover photo was a picture of a pig. The next day the local news reported that a sixteen year old girl had committed suicide and a group of teens was being charged with her murder due to bullying. That sixteen year old girl was Sandy. Bullying in schools has become a very popular topic. With all the advancements in technology, many of these acts are making it into mainstream media. There has been a startling increase in the amount and types of students who feel they are bullied by others in school. Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year and nearly one third of all students get bullied daily. Due to the prevalence of cell phones and social media, these acts of bullying almost always follow the student home. According to the CDC, approximately 4,400 suicide deaths in young people occur per year. That makes suicide...

...Rachel Luna Eng 102 Schroeder 01/11/2015 Bullying in School The problem is that bullying in school has been a major issue for many of years. A lot of times the bullying goes unnoticed until something tragic happens. Bullying can sometimes cause lifelong consequences or even lead to death in some situations. When bullying is happening in school we need to make the kids aware that they are not alone and that there is always somebody that they can talk to about the situation. If the children are afraid of the bullying they may not talk to an adult or say anything until it is too late. There are many ways that we can try to stop bullying in the schools but we also need to make sure that we speak with our children about bullying in order to help prevent and protect the kids who are being bullied. Bullying should never end somebody’s life. In school bullying happens every day and most of the time it continues long term without anybody noticing or the person being bullied even telling anybody. Sometimes there are signs of bullying which us as parents and educators should be aware of. These signs could include skipping school, personal items are damaged or missing, child doesn’t want to go to school, eating habits change, appears sad, angry, anxious, or even depressed, or even significant drop in the child’s grades. ...Social Control and Criminal Deviance: Bullying Nicholas D. Hendreson Dr. Vasilica Margarit Intro to Sociology May 17, 2015 In order to understand what bullying is we need to first define it. According to the video, bullying is getting pleasure from someone else’s pain. There are many kinds of bullying that can be analyzed. There is virtual bullying, physical bullying, verbal bullying, and cyber bullying. Empirical research would need to be used to dissect what bullying is. We cannot just use what we know to understand this. We would have to get specific details of a bullying incident. The empirical research would help me identify why was their bullying, who were the parties involved, was this an isolated incident or ongoing tactic. Bullying just can’t be summed up by one definition or term. It is a case by case scenario where pain is inflicted to hurt someone. Bullying starts at a young age. It starts in the school where kids make fun of each other by calling each other hurtful names, or spreading rumors that aren’t true. These two examples can bring much pain to a person not only at a young age but as an adult. It usually starts by one person who begins to cause pain to another, and they get their other friends involved. It becomes a trickle down affect to where you have 5 or more people bullying on one person. Peer pressure causes people to participate as they don’t want to be left out. The simple reason people usually give for this is because, “everyone else was...

I remember thinking who can help her and why are they being so cruel. Students in school today are very mean. Being bullied can cause a person to have future problems in their development from constant intimidation, low self esteem or living pure in fear. ...School Bullying Junel Loyola DeVry University School Bullying School bullying is a continuing major issue around the world today. Everyday someone in the world is falling victim to bullying. It is a kind of torment that we, as a society, should help prevent as much as possible. Bullying can take on several forms, both physically and mentally. Nevertheless, it is a type of abuse that can have both short term and long term effects on a person's life. Such abuse can lead to injury, psychological harm, or even death in some cases. In school, it was often noticeable that a student is being bullied. It can happen anywhere in the school: in hallways, in the cafeteria, or even inside classrooms. According to John Cloud (2012), current antibullying programs are a waste of time and money. School bullying still happens whether or not an antibullying program is adopted by the school (Jeong & Lee, 2013). If this is the case, then bullying may be more common than anyone thinks. As a society, we should eradicate bullying in order to protect the well-being of students and to deter physical and psychological harm from them. First, one must understand what bullying is and its causes and effects. Bullying can happen for many reasons. One can be bullied for being "different", doing something embarrassing, or being labeled by false rumors that makes the victim look bad to other people. It causes problems for students, such as physical or verbal abuse. Secondly, it is important to know...

...Position Paper on Bullying in the Schools Prevalence of Bullying Behavior Peer victimization is a significant problem in U.S. schools. In 1999, an estimated 5% of students ages 12 through 18 reported fearing attack or harm at school (U.S. Department of Education [USDE], 2000). In a recent national study, Nansel, et al. (2001) found that about 30% of 6 t h - through 10 t h -grade students had been involved in bullying incidents with moderate or frequent regularity. Similar prevalence rates can be found in the state of Florida. For example, in a study by Bully Police, USA, they found that of the 2, 701, 022 school age children in Florida, approximately 442, 157 students were involved in bullying. Defining Bullying Researchers commonly define peer victimization or bullying as a negative act of aggression (or oppression) which is unprovoked, is deliberately intended to cause harm, is carried out repeatedly over time and involves an actual and/or perceived imbalance of power in which the aggressor or group of aggressors are physically or psychologically more powerful than the victim (Boulton & Underwood, 1992; Farrington, 1993; Olweus, 1999; Rigby, 1996; Smith & Thompson, 1991). To clarify further, the USDE (1998) indicates that bullying can take the form of physical abuse (e.g., hitting, punching), verbal abuse (e.g., name-calling, threats), emotional abuse (e.g., ostracizing, humiliating, maliciously gossiping, rating/ranking personal characteristics...

... Bullying in schools for many has become an issue, and that issue for large part is the overwhelming effect it is having on our children that are being subjected to the bullying. Bullying is tragic and something that has gone on in every school since who can remember. Bullying in our schools, do the schools think it is a problem and if so how do we educate the school, students, and parents to end this cruelty. Bullying happens, every day in our schools, and profoundly many of us want to believe it doesn’t happen at all. Our children are victims and also the bully in many cases. Students if educated on what to look for in signs that they are being bullied and not just being played with will go a long way in helping them identify how to stop being the victim. Most students that are victims don’t know it and when they find out they are being bullied they can identify the bully. Many bullies when identified will shy away from it then. They grow off the fear they produce in the victim. Bullying takes place in our schools and it is time we stop portraying that it doesn’t. Working in a school and seeing it first hand, it is very hard to think at first that what you are seeing as bullying or is it just kids being kids. Administrators in our schools are now being educated on how to spot signs of bullying amongst students and how to identify the bullies themselves. This being done will also lead to parents understanding that bullying is an issue in our schools and to...

...Shannon Silva Nov, 2, 2013 Bullying in School Some people believe bullying in school is a normal part of student life. It is this mentality of acceptance that breeds indifference to the physically and psychologically harmful effects of bullying for both the perpetrator and the victim. Bullying must be taken out of schools by raising awareness and increasing supervision. By shedding light on this issue we can implement steps to intervene and prevent bullying thereby creating a more nourishing environment in our school systems. The effects of bullying are both physically and, perhaps worse, psychologically damaging. “The damaging effects of being bullied as a child last long into adulthood with victims up to six times more likely to develop a serious illness.” When compared with their un-bullied counterparts, children that have never been bullied are much more likely to land a better job and are less likely to be involved in criminal activity. Those that are bullies and their victims share the emotional disorders of depression and anxiety. In some cases these disorders persist into adulthood. Children who bully others are more likely engage in criminal activity, abuse their spouses, romantic partners, or children as adults. They are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol. In preventing these actions and behaviors early we can put a dent in the behavior pattern that precedes that line of behavior through adolescence into adulthood. This is a very real issue that needs to...

...Bullying and School Violence School Violence is not something new to us; we hear about it more and more these days where there are shootings in schools, or kids being bullied and the parents are seeking help. The number of children who are becoming victims to this violence is growing. According to the National Center for Education Statistics “During the 2009–10 school year, 85 percent of public schools recorded that one or more of these incidents of violence, theft, or other crimes had taken place, amounting to an estimated 1.9 million crimes. This figure translates to a rate of approximately 40 crimes per 1,000 students enrolled in 2009–10. During the same year, 60 percent of schools reported one of the specified crimes to the police, amounting to about 689,000 crimes—or 15 crimes per 1,000 student’s enrolled.” http://nces.ed.gov/fastfacts/display.asp?id=49. That is a lot of school related crimes and those are just the ones that are being reported. What do I consider a violent act? When I think of violence I tend to only think of the actions that produce physical harm to a person. But the definition of violence” is an extreme form of aggression, such as assault, rape or murder. Violence has many causes which include frustration, exposure to violent media, violence in the home or neighborhood and a tendency to see other people’s actions as hostile even when they’re not.” American Psychological Association; Violence; http://www.apa.org/topics/violence/index.aspx. ... Bullying in School Bullying in school has been going on for decades and has been a constant issue that was not spoken about or dealt with for many years. Students being made fun of really had nobody to turn to for help to have bullying stopped. According to authors’ Aluede, Adeleke, Omoike & Afen-Akpaida, “bullying research began in the 1970’s after author Dan Olweus began and wrote a book about it.” (2008, p.152). Olweus book is considered the first study of bullying. (Noelle, 2005). For the past few years bullying in school has become a topic of open concern. Bullying in schools has become a nationwide problem and schools need to be held accountable because the students are in their care, bullying has caused students to commit suicide, and bullying has led to students dropping out of school. Bullying in school happens while students are in their care. Teachers are present in school all day and must make the effort to stop bullying when they see it happening. School faculty should be able to report all cases of bullying to the Police and the Department of Education. According to an authors’ Dagman Strohmeier and Gil Nolan, “Educators often do not pay enough attention to the fact that bullying is usually not a single event; rather it happens repeatedly over a period of time.” (2012, p.8). Since teachers make up a big part of the school system this is one reason for schools to be held accountable for the bullying going on in school. I was bullied...
