By noon, church was over and most of the sweltering residents had sought refuge from the sun and heat inside their homes or offices. Around 1:10 P.M. the scream of “Fire” reverberated through the streets of downtown followed by the rush of half-clothed citizens rushing to see smoke in a two-story building on Commerce Street. Fire swept north to consume a warehouse and then to the Dallas Herald office-quickly engulfing Dallas’ entire business section.[1] Extensive media coverage of the July 1860 fires in Dallas potentially incited a heightened fear of slave revolts throughout Texas and promoted the formation of vigilante groups. Newspapers served as a medium to spread fear, rumors, and ultimately, panic and violence among white Texans. Yellow Journalism presented exaggerated headlines and stories that linked natural disasters and catastrophes to current fears of the day. The nation was undergoing a sectional split over the issue of slavery and white southerners were on the alert for potential slave plots and uprisings that were spurred by northern abolitionists and Unionists. ...ASSAM EARTHQUAKE AND OUR BUILDINGS Md Ali Akbar MOLLICK* Introduction An earthquake of magnitude 8.7 on the Richter Scale (8.1 on the Moment Magnitude Scale) occurred on 12th June 1897 at 5.11pm in the Assam Basin, some 250 kilometers (km) north from Dhaka, 130 km north-west from Sylhet and 70 km north from today's Bangladesh and Indian border. The epicenter was 26o (N) and 91o (E) and focal depth was 32 km. The shaking was felt over an area of 650,000 square-kilometer (sq-km) and destruction was taking place over an area of 390,000 sq-km. Many masonry buildings including temples, over the destructive area such as Dhubri, Goalpara, Guwahati, Kuch Bihar, Agortola, Kolkata and other cities inside India, either totally or partially damaged due to this earthquake. The earthquake created general panic in Dhaka and other areas of today's Bangladesh including Rangpur, Dinajpur, Sylhet, Rajshahi, Natore, Mymensing, Dhaka, Chittagong, Comilla, Noakhali, Jamalpur etc. A total number of 1542 persons were killed due to this earthquake out of which five were from Dhaka including two foreigners. Three buildings such as Shaheen Medical Hall, Temple Nazi's Shabagh Math and house occupied by Mrs Stansbury were totally damaged and the government houses for commissioner, collector, judge and civil surgeon were partially damaged in Dhaka, which were rebuilt. This paper seeks to reformulate an asset-pricing model (RAPM) to demonstrate why firm characteristics help to explain stock returns. Design/methodology/approach – The RAPM is grounded in an economic setting where two groups of agents hold different beliefs about firm fundamental values, and the more sophisticated ¨ group (rationals) adopts contrarian strategies against the naıve group (quasis). The model is derived in a static equilibrium within the consumption-investment framework with heterogeneous agents. Findings – The key theoretical result is a parsimonious equation of cross-sectional expected returns that not only are specified by the traditional risk-return relation, but also are determined by contrarian adjustments at both market-wide and firm-specific levels. When the model is taken to empirical specifications, it leads to consistent explanations for the behaviors of growth and value stocks, and for size and book-to-market effects. With the team’s star player not returning, there are many opinions and suggestions being made as to how the Hickory Huskers should be coached. When the new coach Norman Dale seems to brush the opinions of the townspeople away, they become hostile and agitated with him. George Walker, who is the obvious leader of the concerned townspeople, decides that he will step in and become the assistant coach. When George is denied the role of assistant coach, there is immediate hostility. George rallies fellow parents and townspeople to observe practices and gets them riled up about the new coaching techniques Coach Dale uses. When Coach Dale decides to recruit the town drunk as his assistant coach, George convinces the people to go as far as taking a vote to get Coach Dale removed from his position. The anger and frustration from one person ended up radiating throughout an entire town, and although some people may have never acted on their feelings, the actions of one man caused the Ripple Effect of actions through many. The children who had seen the violent videos displayed more aggressive behavior towards the others such as hitting and pushing with those who had not seen the violent video were less aggressive (Bjorkqvist 1985) These results yielded significant, displaying the short term effects of the effect of violent media on a youth. A second experiment to be examined displaying oberservational learning in relation to the short term effect of media violence was conducted by Berkowitz in 1995. He used boys placed in a home for troubled children, divided them up into two houses and assigned eith violent or non violent movies for five nights in a row. After each night after viewing the films, they were observed on psychical aggressiveness while interacting. Those who had viewed the violent movies every night displayed more signs of agressivness while those who had not were more peaceful. The children modeled after the films that they had observed and demonstrated that behavior in real life.
