Nursing is commonly viewed as the most selfless and compassionate job among all professionals. Majority of the nurses joined the workforce to help others. Considerate and kind nurses can, however, become a causality of a poor patient’s outcomes if not given the proper support and adequate staffing. Burnout due to heavy workload and understaffing remains one of the major problems in the nursing profession, nevertheless minimal effort is being allocated to solve the crisis. For the purpose of this paper, I will focus on the structure of self-scheduling, its benefits and disadvantages as well as its relevance in the Canadian nursing leadership practice. I will also provide background information of nursing burn out and the current solutions that …show more content…
The flexibility of self-scheduling allows them to fulfill their responsibilities aside from their work. The reduced amount of absences also contributes to job satisfaction as the heavy workload due to understaffing becomes infrequent. Griesmer (1993) found that nurses are happier with the new self-scheduling as they become more autonomous in their hours and they become independent decision makers. Nursing managers saves time, as the responsibility of having enough staff for each shift becomes everyone’s responsibility. The open communication and collaboration of each member reduces the manager’s workload, thus increasing the productivity as nurses can focus more on other …show more content…
The change has to come from the nurses. Nursing educating bodies like RNAO, CNA and CNO need to empower nurses to advocate for themselves and promote a flexible scheduling system that accounts for each staff member. RNAO should also look more into a concrete self scheduling framework that is readily implemented in the hospital settings in their best practice guideline instead of just briefly mentioning it in the appendix (RNAO,2017). I believe that float nursing should not be the reality of nursing profession as it only covers the short-term issues. By implementing a flexible scheduling system that caters to the staff’s needs as reduce absenteeism, increase employee satisfaction, and efficiency in management. The barriers for implementing this vision are employee resistance, communication breakdowns and nurses who abuse the system. With proper management and a leadership approach such as guiding the staff through the process the barriers of change can be overcome. As a nursing leader I will lead the change, empower each nurse through the transition and become a transformational leader. Many factors influence the satisfaction of new graduates.
