Discussion 5.1 Objections and Obtaining Commitment

You work as a graphic designer for a small local newspaper. You have been a loyal employee since you moved to the area 7 years ago, and you have regularly earned additional pay and responsibilities for your hard work. There are 5 other full-time employees at the newspaper.

The sales position at the newspaper has become somewhat of a revolving door; the newspaper has gone through three employees in that position in the past two years, and the position will be vacant again in two weeks.

You are interested in the sales job, and are thinking of asking your manager to redesign your job so that the sales position is combined with your designer position. You hope for a long career in the newspaper industry, and see this as a chance to learn a new aspect of the business. The combination of the two positions has not been attempted in other local paper offices, but you think that it is realistic to handle the duties of both positions, and that each position's duties would complement the other. As the paper's designer, you typically work closely with the sales staff to lay out ads and promotions, so you are familiar with the types of ads that your paper can sell. Since you have been there for a long time, you know many of the regular advertisers on a first-name basis, and you are familiar with how they want their ads to look. You have even sold advertisers up to larger ad spaces on a number of occasions.

Your job as a designer is salaried; the sales job offers a small hourly base wage plus a bonus of 15% of ad sales if targets are met each month.

Job Analysis and Selection

...Job Analysis and Selection Since InterClean, Inc., has acquired EnviroTech I would like to make sure everyone is heading toward the company’s mission and goals. To do that I will need to do a job analysis, workforce planning, and then I will be selecting a group of employees who will embrace our company’s new strategy, and they will become the new sales team. Job Analysis “The term job analysis describes the process of obtaining information about jobs” (Cascio, 2006, p. 158). The job analysis to determine the essential characteristics of a job in order to produce job specification. A job specification is a written statement of the essential characteristics of a job including necessary qualifications, duties, responsibilities, and degree of authority of the job holder. Another part needed is a summary of the task requirements that is called a job description. According to Cascio, “it usually includes information about the tasks, to be done on the job as-well-as the personal characteristics (education, experience, specialized training, and personality) necessary to do the tasks” (p. 158). Three key elements that are included in a job analysis are: 1. Knowledge - body of information necessary for task performance 2. Skills - level of proficiency needed for task performance 3. Abilities - capabilities necessary to perform the job I will be doing the job analysis with some help and guidance from human resources. By me doing this, it will give me...

...the best deals and programs they can and we are supposed to implement on it. If our sales numbers are not up from last year or consistent, we are in the danger of losing that brand and they might go with our competitors. Anytime in the year, the winery can come up with some very special deals for a limited time and we have to make sure we sell it. Most of the times, the managers said that they are not given enough notice and it gets hard to get those programs together and get an urgent meeting scheduled with the sales team. It’s like that you are supposed to leave everything else, and just get on to that job. It was felt amongst everyone that if there is proper planning in place and enough notice is given, we could do a much better job in selling all the program. One of the colleagues felt that certain people could ease the stress by not over reacting too quickly to a situation. They need to think about what they are going to say rather than taking snap decisions. Communication was the other source of stressor. All my colleagues argued back and forth that people within the company don’t communicate well enough and when the goals are not met, they are pissed at each other. They also agreed that they need to email each other more often, in order to keep everyone on the same page with the deal structures and programs. The...

Interview

...Gregory Gilbert 11/21/11 Writing Studies-CPN101-008 Patterson Salesman Being a salesman isn’t as easy as the average person would think. It happens to be one of the hardest jobs to succeed at these days especially in today’s economy. To be salesman you need to have a lot of determination and passion. You need to have the ability to pursue your objection and you actually have to believe in whatever you’re selling. Jobs are very rare and even those who have the job in most situations aren’t making that much money. Luckily my father has numerous other jobs as well as being a salesman. A sale is defined as the act of selling a product or service in return for money or some type of other compensation. The seller completes a sale after a request. After that comes the ownership passing of the item, and the negotiation of a price. Most of the time a salesman agrees to a fair price but not in all cases. Being a salesman means that you have an enormous amount of competition. Being a “salesman” is a very broad occupation, to get specific there are over a million jobs in sales specifically. Usually to qualify to be a salesman you would need a degree in some type of business or marketing program. But then again the opportunities in college can lead you to do anything, so you really just need to be good at bullshitting. Bullshitting for a salesman isn’t exactly lying to the customer but making him think the product is better than it actually is while leading him onto a deal...

Case Study

...Case Study 1 Week 1 Professor Eckert Shield Financial Problem Statement Doug bloom recently was promoted from sales rep to sales manager in a new territory for a struggling branch. This position is risky since the old sales manager was fired since he was unable to produce higher sales numbers. Doug’s mission is to implement a new First Plus program through his sales force. The issue, is that most reps are used to catering to their smaller accounts, which is opposite of the First Plus program. Doug is struggling to get everyone on board with this new program since it lacks good compensation incentives, but has to find a way to convince his reps this good idea since he is being pressured from corporate. Furthering the issue, are many upset employees with these changes including the top performing rep, Tiffany Williams, who will most likely resign soon. Summary of the Facts Doug will reach success when he is able to convince the reps that the First Plus program is beneficial to all. The First Plus program is aimed towards acquiring large accounts, which require more time due to all the moving parts with larger companies, and are also more difficult to sell. The current way Doug’s branch operates is mostly from smaller accounts, which have faster closing times since a smaller company usually requires a decision by one person and the financial side of things are easier to see. Shield Financial is pushing for this new program since competitors have already rolled out a similar...

Business Memo

...Lynwood Stewart John Rodman MKTG-451 Professional Seller Interview Paper During the summer of 2014, I interned for Aflac, Inc. and was mentored by a man named Dale Shaddock (see Appendix A). Though the internship proved unsuccessful, I learned plenty from Mr. Shaddock about sales and the life that accompanies personal selling. Before the interview, I viewed personal selling as necessary, but never bothered to delve deeper and conceptualize the reasons behind the importance of personal selling. This assignment has changed my perspective on 5 key aspects of personal selling: teamwork skills, customer value proposition, self-leadership, sales dialogue planning, and the characteristics of sales careers. These aspects give a more comprehensive outlook on personal selling and how it applies to my life. Teamwork is one of the skills that remain an essential part of any organization. One of the first questions I asked Mr. Shaddock was to “Describe the importance of leadership and teamwork in your field?” He replied, “If I can’t rely on my guys and vice versa, how would we anything get done? Teamwork is fundamental at this level.” A very simple response, but when referring back to Sell 4 and the skills that translate to increased sales and organizational performance, it proves relevant. To be specific, understanding the other individuals and showing personal integrity are two teamwork skills that I have come to value highly. Understanding the other individuals is key when...

Marketing Myopia

...“Selling and marketing are antithetical rather than synonymous or even complementary. There will always be, one can assume, a need for some selling. But the aim of marketing is to make selling superfluous. The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well that the product or service fits him and sells itself.” (Drucker 1973, pp.64-65) In the early years of the ‘70s era, Drucker was one of the first educators and authors who identify marketing as a way to understand customers’ needs rather than to sell the products. With the same thinking as Drucker, in a journal article named Marketing Myopia (1960), Theodore Levitt examines and analyzes limitations of managers in approaching the philosophy of modern business. The core of this article is to criticize myopic visions of managers who always pay attention to their selling targets as well as their firms’ without perceiving that the most crucial goal in business is to satisfy customers, not to sell products. In order to illustrate his view, Levitt (1960) take the railroad industry as a typical example for the failure in its business at that time. In this case, he points his finger on the railroads’ disorientation as the main culprit in making their customers to use others such as cars, trucks, airplanes and even telephones instead of being royal travelers to the old traditional transportation. In other words, the railroads killed their business by themselves because they determined their industry in a wrong mind...

Explication and Argumentation

...Explication and Argumentation to a Specific Audience It’s accurately described as the world’s online marketplace, connecting buyers and sellers both near and far. The vast majority of people are casual, intermittent users. But maybe you are ready to take that next step and make selling on eBay a full-time vocation. Nearly anyone can sign up and begin selling immediately, but only those who maintain the status of PowerSeller are able to financially maximize their selling experience. EBay makes a portion of their profits by extracting a fee from each attempted and actual sale. This fee is deducted from the sellers account. The fees are structured at a lower percentage for those who generate the most profit for eBay; those are the PowerSellers. A PowerSeller typically saves 5% over members of the general selling class. Other benefits exist beyond reduced fees, including access to group health insurance and representation in customer disputes. Even United Parcel Service in a cooperative agreement with eBay will offer shipping discounts to PowerSellers. With benefits such as these available, it’s obvious that the PowerSeller program is an attempt by eBay to attract recruits. The decision point for interested individuals as with any decision often comes down to the overall opportunity cost. Those can be weighed by viewing eBay’s PowerSeller and Top Rated Seller Policy. The website itself is accessible on the internet or smartphone as eBay.com. The PowerSeller requirement...
