Motivation

...valued; and as such, motivation is a done deal. Right? After all, how hard is it for a person to care about another? And want to see him or her do their best? After all, it is only the right thing to do. But as we say in law, “you can sue anyone but whether you will win … depends!” The ability to motivate depends upon many factors, commencing with the leader’s abilities and desire. For starters, the leader must want to show its workforce that it cares; and then, it will rely upon any number of means to do so, such as -- for the purposes of this paper -- having an appreciation and understanding of its followers’ needs. However, one can be the guru of all motivational gurus, and if its followers do not want to be motivated or cannot be motivated, it will not happen. Like the old saying: “You can take the horse to the water but you cannot force it to drink; he will drink only if he is thirsty.” The same goes for followers! This paper examines the role of the leader in motivation; and in doing so, delves into several of the more popular theories and tools, such as the...

A limited number of public sector organisations have implemented it. This paper describes a case study of CSA implementation in a Scottish Housing Association. The case study details the decision processes that led to the choice of CSA as a favoured audit technique, and the development of CSA skills within the organisation. This paper examines the broader benefits of a CSA approach, in terms of performance management and employee empowerment. Ben & Jerry's

...Week – 4 Organizing Paper “Ben & Jerry’s” MGT – 330 Instructor: Mark P. Keays Due: Wednesday, October 24, 2007 By: Lloyd D. Mays Ben & Jerry’s is not like most Corporate American Organizations, whereas these organizations design and base their management style around the “Pyramid Effect“. The “Pyramid Effect“ is very basic; at the top of the pyramid is the President or CEO of the company followed by Senior Management, Stockholders, Middle Management, Front Line Supervisors, and then the Employees that physically run the day-to-day operations and tasks that make the job a success. These practices are what makes jobs just jobs, which lead to stress, lack of motivation, and most of all a high employee turnover rate. However, like a diamond in the rough there are some companies that not only preach but also practice the “ Up Side Down Pyramid Effect “. Ben & Jerry’s utilizes the “Up Side Down Pyramid Effect“ where the Employees are on top and run the day-to-day operations of the business to make it successful. Knowing this CEO’s and Senior Management tend to implement employee empowerment, incentives, and excellent benefits. When doing this, companies like Ben & Jerry’s find that the employee turnover rate is very low and a happy and respected employee is a well productive employee. Thus making Ben & Jerry’s one of the most sought after jobs in America. Creativity, is a major part of the foundation of how Ben & Jerry’s created a benefits...

Leadership, Management, and Command

...Leadership, Management and Command: The Officer’s trinity.[1] W B Howieson & H Kahn The acts of leading, managing and commanding (based on either philosophy or practice) have had to adapt throughout the history of the Royal Air Force, in concert with changing environments; these acts will have to change again in the 21st century and will require new skills, new attitudes and differing perspectives of the Officer’s trinity. INTRODUCTION There is a plethora of literature on leadership, management and command. In the civilian (business) market, there are – literally – thousands of books on leadership; management; and leadership and management as a ‘dual’ concept. However, there are no books in the business market on what the military call ‘command’.[i] In contrast, in the military domain, there are an equal amount of books on leadership; command; and leadership and command together. However, very little has been written – to date – about military management; this represents a very serious limitation. New business practices and performance management systems now require capable senior managers and leaders and private sector organizations have found clear strategic benefit in providing a structured approach to the developmental needs of senior executives. Although it is recognized that leadership, management and command are closely related (especially in the military environment), comparatively little has been written on the nature and practice...

Fasb

...The Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) governs the preparation of corporate financial reports. This paper will reflect on the FASB conception, its accountability, and members of the board. Furthermore, in many ways, the FASB standards known as generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), places limitations on business practices and financial reporting requirements; but it is required since accounting standards are crucial in a market where financial information should be transparent, credible, and easy to understand but some would disagree. These standards help protect both the stakeholder and business communities. When and Why was the FASB created you may ask? In 1973, the FASB was created “ to establish and improve standards of financial accounting and reporting that foster financial reporting by nongovernmental entities that provides decision-useful information to investors and other users of financial reports” (FASB.org, 2012). Those standards are officially recognized as authoritative by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) (Financial Reporting Release No. 1, Section 101, and reaffirmed in its April 2003 Policy Statement) and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (Rule 203, Rules of Professional Conduct, as amended May 1973 and May 1979), (FASB.org, 2012). Establishing these standards are extremely important because it effectively provides for an efficient economy when dealing with the allocation of resources to provide a more...

Assignment of Balance Scprecard

...Managing Lodging Brands: A Balanced-Scorecard Approach Abstract: The issue of brand management remains a formidable challenge for lodging organizations and lodging brand managers. This challenge is partly due to the fact that effective brand management requires an all-inclusive and comprehensive organizational approach. This paper proposes a framework that uses the balance scorecard (BSC) as the basis for brand management. The framework proposes both a proactive and reactive approach to brand management through the use of performance measures or perspectives, which form the underlying components of the BSC. These are the financial perspective, the customer perspective, process perspective, and the learning perspective. The paper enhances and expands this BSC framework by including a brand maintenance and enhancement component. The concept of balance scorecard was introduced by Kaplan & Norton (1992, 1996, 2007) and they argued that that balance scorecard is a useful tool that tells managers how organization is performing in relation to strategic objectives of organization. Kaplan & Norton(1992) state the four perspectives which are financial perspective, customer perspective, internal business process perspective and learning and growth perspective. These four perspectives are used by managers in order to measure and analyze information. Kalpan and Norton explain these four perspectives which are effective in brand management and manger should make these perspectives...

...Political Empowerment of Women: Comparative Study of South Asian Countries Amna Mahmood A South Asia is a home of variety of cultures, languages and religions. Here we can find a number of variations in customs, value systems and ways of life. But one thing is common among all the cultures and regions of South Asia that is gender discrimination. Women traditionally are considered subordinated to the male and this remained a prominent feature both in the rural and the urban areas. In urban areas a little improvement is due to enhanced level of education and economic independence in women. There is very less distinction of educated and uneducated as that of religion in this regard. The situation is improved with regard to political empowerment especially with the allocation of 33% seats in local government in South Asia but in most of the cases this change is not satisfactory. The real empowerment would be achieved only if it would be accompanied by the social and economic empowerment. For that purpose, society has to be changed at large. Such change cannot be materialized only through any coercive legislation or strong state action in the blink of an eye. But the fact remains there that in societies where all the changes start from top to bottom these measures along with a strong political will can stimulate a change to improve the situation gradually. This paper discusses the measures taken by different governments in South Asia to achieve the goal of political empowerment and participation...

Success of Microfinance in Bangladesh: Its Determinants, Impacts & Challenges

...Success of Microfinance in Bangladesh: Its Determinants, Impacts & Challenges Chapter- One Introduction 1.1 Introduction: In recent years, microcredit, in its wider dimension known as microfinance, has become a much favored intervention for poverty alleviation in the developing countries and least development countries. There is scarcely a poor country and development oriented donor agency (multilateral, bilateral and private) not involved in the promotion (in one form or other) of a microfinance program. Microfinance programs claim many achievements as its impact and an outside observer cannot but wonder at the range of diversity of the benefits claimed. Although Bangladesh has huge potential for development, it is, for various socio-economic reasons, among the poorest countries in the world. About half of the country's population lives below the poverty line with 80% in the rural areas. The burden of poverty falls disproportionately on women, who constitute half of the total population. Logically, therefore, poverty alleviation and creation of rural employment are top priorities in the development agenda of the government of Bangladesh (GOB) which has adopted a broad based approach to poverty alleviation, emphasizing macroeconomic stability, economic liberalization, and support for a number of government agencies and non-government organizations (NGOs). Substantial progress has been made in implementing the microcredit program (MCP), and the scope for its efficient...
