This activity requires you to present a record of two service experiences that you have had (we referred to it as ‘encountering a service’).

For each encounter that you wish to present (only first-hand experience), you have to record the following:

1. Factual details.

2. Your response.

3. Your analysis.

4. How this relates to research or academic writing.

Please record only those experiences you are willing to share.

Note: Please record more two encounters from two different places.

You are not only expected to clearly describe the events and comment on them but also to:

a) Provide a clear analysis of what you consider to be the main service management related issues and how you recommend that they be handled.

b) Where appropriate, link your analysis / recommendation with appropriate background literature, citing appropriate references to theoretical frameworks or concepts.

In the context of 21st century business dynamics, please answer the following questions supporting your arguments with relevant examples and references to appropriate Service Marketing academic theory, concepts and frameworks.

a) What are the major managerial consequences of the fact that services to a significant extent are consumed at the same time as they are produced?

b) What impact does this have on the management of service quality?

c) Explain how firms can trace possible reasons for poor quality through applying the GAP analysis framework.

d) How appropriate is this framework to practice?

Activity: 3 Application of service marketing principles (mark weighting: 50%)

Please provide your responses to any two of the following four questions. Please support your answer with suitable examples and where appropriate reference to relevant academic theories and concepts.

a) Critically evaluate the nature of what service encounters, moments of truth and critical incidents are and how they have an impact on assessments of service quality.

b) Give examples of how service innovation ideas are generated and analyse what makes service innovation difficult to achieve.

c) The contention that there is a separate service sector is not only a myth but a dangerous misconception. Critically evaluate.

d) The Service-Dominant Logic approach to services is not a paradigm shift but another perspective on the application of service marketing.

Assessment guidelines: You are expected to support your responses with appropriate examples and references to academic theories, concepts and frameworks. Simply reproducing what is already in the public domain will not be considered to be sufficient enough to merit more than a simple PASS.

Late Work

All work is to be submitted via Turnitin.

Any assessed work submitted after the original submission date, or after the extended submission date, without appropriate formal authorisation from the Module Tutor/Programme Leader will be recorded as LATE and will attract a penalty as appropriate.

Late assessed work will be marked in the usual way so that you are given feedback on the standard of work achieved. However, it will then incur a penalty applied as follows: work received up to 24 hours after a deadline will incur a penalty of 10 marks, with a further 10 marks per day (including weekends) until a zero mark is recorded. Non-submission of assessed work will result in zero (0%) being awarded for that element of assessed work.

Requirements Relating to Excessive Word Count

A penalty for excessive word count is applied to all programmes. The word count does not normally include appendices, bibliographies, or references to sources. Unless otherwise stated in the assessment brief, quotations are normally included as part of the word count. Students should include the number of words used, excluding the relevant items above, on the front of the assignment cover sheet or at the end of the assignment. There is normally a 10% leeway allowed above the specified word count before a penalty is imposed.

Assignments must be marked in their entirety and the penalty imposed at the end. The penalty for exceeding the word count will be 5 marks per 1,000 words excess (e.g. if a 1,000 word assignment, 5 marks off for 1,101-2,100 words, 10 marks off for 2,101-3,100 words, and so on).

Guidelines on this are in Appendix J of the Principles and Regulations Handbook.

The student will be reassessed only on the component or components, which they have failed within a module. Where it is difficult to replicate the exact assessment (i.e. a group assessed piece of work), a task that is equivalent or proportionate to the original will be set. This will be designed to meet the required learning outcomes.
