...As an amalgamation of the old and the new, Shanghai is commonly known as an archetype of modernity and a herald of the future. Despite its intimate connection with typified globalization processes, China’s modernization needs to be understood as “an endogenous process that will lead to a distinct form of Chinese modernity” (Friedmann). As the scale and size of China’s urbanization continues at an unprecedented rate, multiple socio-economic changes will occur that will have implications on both domestic and global levels. While unparalleled urbanization guarantees substantial new markets and investment opportunities, it also introduces many multifaceted challenges to overcome. The challenge of growing urban populations will transmit increasing demands on the security of funding for various social services, while affecting the supply and demand of essential resources such as clean water, land and energy. It is for these reasons, that, “stories of architectural construction are not only about engineering and aesthetics; they also include cultural and sociological perspectives”(). In essence, examining the intersections of the past and present within the contemporary urban backdrop of Shanghai will serve as a catalyst in assessing the effects of urban construction on Shanghai and its citizens. This reflection will focus on new and reconstructed space in a historical and contemporary context. The history of the Bund will provide the political context of Shanghai’s rise and fall during...

...Shanghai Shanghai is a huge city located in China. This happens to be the largest populated city in the whole world. It is a global financial center, and a transport hub with the world's busiest container port. Located in the Yangtze River Delta in East China, Shanghai sits at the mouth of the Yangtze River in the middle portion of the Chinese coast. In 1842, the British arrived, Shanghai was already densely populated with 250,000 people. This number will grow rapidly in Shanghai in the future. After the British arrived so did the United Stated and France. British then called them coat-tail imperialist. Citizens of many countries and all continents came to Shanghai to live and work during this time period; those who stayed for long periods, called themselves "Shanghailanders”. The reasons they stayed was mostly because of the trade of opium and other things like cotton. This number of people in Shanghai now is up over 24 million and growing every day. One of the main reasons for the vast population in this region was Shanghai had a large concentration of fresh drinkable water that most people wanted and the cotton fields were vast and growing and there was a potential for a lot of money to be made. After people began to settle is when factories were built because there were a vast number of people who needed jobs. This was when the population grew vastly. Also they people began to come to this region because the Opium wars were breaking out in the ghettos of shanghai. The...

...MAJESTICA HOTEL IN SHANGHAI? On March 20, 2005, Richard Roy, executive vicepresident of Majestica Hotels Inc., was in China, for negotiations with Commercial Properties of Shanghai Limited (CPS). They were discussing a possible management contract under which Majestica would be the operator of a new luxury hotel there owned by Shanghai Industrial Holdings. Majestica Hotels Inc. was one of the world’s leading operators of luxury hotels. The expansion into mainland China had been on management’s agenda since 1999. The opportunity emerged in late 2003 when a close friend of Majestica’s chief executive officer (CEO) revealed that CPS was looking for an operator for its new luxury hotel under construction in Shanghai. Majestica immediately sent representatives to Shanghai to explore the possibility of becoming the operator. Majestica’s proposal was welcomed by CPS, and a letter of intent was signed on August 20, 2004. However, in discussions regarding the management contract, the two parties had reached a deadlock. The key issues to be resolved were the contract term, and the responsibilities and rights of Majestica as the operator, and CPS as the owner, of the hotel. This Shanghai deal was important for Majestica’s global expansion. It would not only provide Majestica with the opportunity to enter the China market but could also set a precedent for Majestica’s future expansion in other emerging markets. MAJESTICA HOTELS INC. Majestica was founded in 1970 in Western...

A “Port” is a facility for receiving ships and transferring cargo to and from them. They are usually situated at the edge of an ocean or sea, river, or lake. Ports often have cargo-handling equipment such as cranes and forklifts for use in loading/unloading of ships, which may be provided by private interests or public bodies. Often, canneries or other processing facilities will be located very close by. Harbor pilots, barges and tugboats are often used to safely maneuver large ships in tight quarters as they approach and leave the docks. The presence of deep water in channels or berths, the provision of protection from the wind, waves and storm surges and access to intermodal transportation such as trains or trucks are critical to the functioning of seaports and river ports. Types of port: (i) Seaport: The terms "port" and "seaport" are used for ports that handle ocean-going vessels; (ii) River port: used for facilities that handle river traffic; (iii) Inland port: An inland port may be located on a lake or river and have river...

The city of Shanghai, which was a badge member of the exclusive club of the world’s premiere cities, worthy of the event in a world-class. More widely, the Beijing Olympics of 2008 showed the new China and precisely provided an example of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Hence, the Chinese government may point to the Expo as another example of the admiration of the world turning toward China. It was reported that in the last 160 years, there has never an Expo similar to that, which took place in the 2010 Shanghai Expo. A case in point is that more than 700,000 people poured into a site the size of Baltimore in Shanghai in 184 days. They found that an unprecedented number of pavilions, built by the state and enterprises exhibitors, which deployed cutting edge architecture and state-of-the-art exhibition techniques to comment as ‘Better City, Better Life’ in English, but the Chinese version is closer to ‘city: let ’s make life better ’. There are several characteristics of this FTZ (Free-Trade Zone). Firstly, this FTZ focuses on function innovation and this is different from other bonded areas in China which focus on special policies. Secondly, this FTZ is different from the Singapore Freeport mode. Singapore Freeport mode is characterized by the development of policies and systems in Freeport, including the freedom of trade, finance exchange and shipping. Even though China (Shanghai) Pilot FTZ draws international practice, the main purpose is promoting reform and accumulating experience for reform in nationwide. Last but not least, this FTZ is a national strategy which is not limited to general industry cultivation, investment and economic development. America established TPP (Trans -Pacific Partnership Agreement) with countries situated around Pacific Ocean and TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment...

...Shanghai Zhu Jia Jiao – The Ancient River Town Thanks to the extended holiday brought by Qu Yuan, on the Dragon Boat Festival I took an hour bus trip to this tourist site in rural Shanghai – Zhu Jia Jiao. For those who don’t know the story of Dragon Boat Festival, there was once a great poet and Politian Qu Yuan, who jumped into the river out of despair for his empire. People then mourned his death by throwing glutinous rice wrapped with reed leaves, known as Zongzi, into the river, hoping to prevent animals from eating his body. These Zongzi became a cultural festival food, and can be found everywhere in this ancient river town. Zhu Jia Jiao is an ancient town along a river, with historic Chinese houses, stores, and bridges. I can imagine how this town had been hundreds of thousands of years ago, just like the daily life illustrated in the famous Chinese painting “Along the River During the Qingming Festival” (清明上河圖). But looking from one of the 36 bridges today, it feels nostalgia to see the same view, except that regular residents are replaced by tourists and business people. On the narrow streets you can still find elders dressed in traditional costume, selling cultural food made in the old fashioned way. Namely, the famous stinky Tofu that you can trace from far far away. Also, because of the special festival, there were people demonstrating the process of making Zongzi, and with the entrance ticket every visitor can experience making one Zongzi for free! Wrapping...

...the construction and management of the hotel. First, CPS wants to learn how to manage the hotel themselves in the near future. Majestica wants to sign a contract term no less than 50 years because that is what they have on their current hotels elsewhere. However, since the average hotel management term in China is only 10 years, CPS is prepared to offer no more than a 30 year contract. CPS also does not want Majestica to control all aspects of the construction and design of the control, whereas Majestica feels is necessary they do control these aspects. Since Majestica has named all of the hotels it manages as “Majestica Hotel, (Location),” it feels it should name this hotel “Majestica Hotel, Shanghai” in order to be consistent. CPS disagrees and wants to name the hotel “Shanghai Oceania – Majestica Hotel.” The management and general staffing of the hotel is the most important issue at hand here. Majestica believes that creating a service culture at the hotel is the most important part of being a successful luxury hotel. Therefore, experienced expatriate managers and carefully selected employees is a must in Majestica’s eyes. CPS disagrees and wants to have a Chinese general manager in the near future as well as Chinese employees at every level. CPS wants to learn how to properly manage a luxury hotel and thinks this will take only a few years at most. Majestica’s Richard Roy knows that careful staffing is the secret to success in this business, and on average it took...

...Recommendation Throughout the entire case study Paus failed to recognize the need for cultural adaptation, training and awareness and the importance of utilizing local resources to assist with cultural issues. Due to the two different cultures and generations now there is a clash between the old vision and new vision of doing business in China. Olsen and Li stand for the old and traditional way of doing business in China regarding to the Chinese values. In their view Eurochem Shanghai should carry on with the old system because relationships are overriding and values still remain strong, otherwise they will lose even more customers. On the other hand Paus is going the young and innovative way arguing that China will change one day and they have to adapt the marketing system to the new market conditions. So, is Paus right or wrong? In order to find an agreement and not to suffer, but to benefit from the diversity and different approaches of leadership, a meeting of all participants is needed at the end of the case. All persons involved should negotiate about different possibilities in order to create better situation. First of all, there have to be taken several steps in order to prepare the negotiation process. Both sides should look at the aspects which force them to negotiate; they should clarify their own objectives, stakes, the counterpart’s interests and the balance of power to position themselves. There is an urgent need to find an agreement because there are still...

...The history of Chinese film has three separate threads of development: Cinema of Hong Kong, Cinema of China, and Cinema of Taiwan. The cinema of Mainland China after 1949 has grown up somewhat suppressed by the Communist regime until now. The Beginnings: Shanghai as the Center Motion pictures were introduced to China in 1896. The first recorded screening of a motion picture in China occurred in Shanghai on August 11, 1896, as an "act" on a variety bill. The first Chinese film, a recording of the Beijing Opera, The Battle of Dingjunshan(汉中之战), was made in November 1905. For the next ten years the production companies were mainly foreign-owned, and the domestic film industry did not start in earnest until 1916, centering around Shanghai, a thriving entrepot center and the largest city in the Far East. During the 1920s, film technicians from the United States trained Chinese technicians in Shanghai, and American influence continued to be felt there for the next two decades. The first truly important Chinese films were produced starting from the 1930s, when the "progressive" or "left-wing" films were made, like Cheng Bugao's Spring Silkworms (1933), Sun Yu's The Big Road (1935), and Wu Yonggang's The Goddess (1934). During this time the Kuomintang struggled for power and control over the major studios, and their influence can be seen in the ensuing films produced. The post-1930 era is called the first "golden period" of Chinese cinema, where several talented directors appeared...
