SHOWDOWN!
Brendan Geyer

There I was, sitting behind my drum kit on a hot afternoon, hitting the skins with precision and passion - rehearsing for our bands first show. New Era was ready, we were practicing our audition song "Word Up" and by the time we finished the first hour of practice, we started the second hour - there is no substitute for hard work.

The moment our band, New Era, entered the St. Mary's Battle of the Bands competition we knew we would have to work hard from the very beginning if we wanted a chance to perform alongside some of the greatest school bands in the country. Donovan, my twin brother and lead guitarist, informed us that we will be auditioning in only 3 days time - we could not contain our excitement. We departed Southdowns immediately after the last school bell rang. We managed to fit 20 people into a 15 sweater mini van - yes that's right, South Africans in transit. The trip was surprisingly quiet, the only noise in the bus was the sound of my drum sticks rebounding off the seat In front of me and the humming of some of the band members, humming the audition song to themselves over and over again to ensure perfection.

When we had finally arrived the band was full of energy, we could not contain our excitement! We stepped onto the stage, performed our hearts out and received a standing ovation from the audience - not bad if you ask me. The results of the qualifying bands would only be posted online in three days time, we were sure we had already qualified but as Mr. Sheldon would always say, "Stay humble guys - don't grow wings!". A few days passed, nothing. We were starting to get nervous, "Surely they would of posted them by now?" I thought to myself. I could not concentrate in class - my mind was set on leading my band to the top, to greatness, to victory! Then as soon as our hopes were depleted, the word came, "We made it through to the finals!" screamed our ecstatic bassist, Una. The room lit up and we celebrated together - we were in, but with this victory awaited new obstacles to climb.

We started rehearsing our new song, "Welcome to Paradise" , it was one of the songs that inspired this band to come together and create music. It had passion and victory written all over it. Blood, sweat and tears. Never has this 3 word motivator been more appropriate. My hands were covered with blisters, the guitarists fingers were bleeding and some of the vocalists were giving in to the stress of learning so many lyrics in such little time. As much as we were physically and mentally exhausted, we never lost sight of where we were going. We managed to pull it all together and perfect the song.

Showtime! We arrived at the venue and were shown to our band waiting room. We sat down and took a moment to clear our thoughts and spend time in prayer, thanking The Lord for blessing us with such an amazing opportunity to do what we love. We were no longer worried about the outcome - our new goal was to have as much fun as possible and perform to our greatest ability. Then we were called, we could hear the crowds applause and as soon as I stepped onto the stage my musical alter ego took control. After an amazing performance we placed 4th out of the 10 bands, but in our hearts we knew we had achieved greatness.

The Showdown: Humbucker V. Single Coil

...The showdown: Humbucker v. Single coil Michael Heinerth Eng 220-university academic writing March 16, 2015 Jennifer Malia The showdown: Humbucker v. Single coil While it’s important to some people, mostly guitar geeks, most folks can’t tell the difference in tone--that is, the subtle nuances that make up the overall sound that an electric guitar makes. The average listener could tell you if the sound is “thick” or “twangy”—but what makes those differences? Dispelling with differences in effects, amplification, etc, the root of tone is in the pickups. “What is a pickup?” you may ask. In the 40’s, a few people (notably Leo Fender, Les Paul, and Seth Lover) were working on a technology that would change the face of music permanently. By wrapping thin, coated, copper wire around magnets, and applying a current, a new means of “hearing” the guitar was born. This construction is not entirely from the concept of an electro magnet. The substitution of a magnet for a steel bar changes the device into somewhat of a magnetic sensor. In essence, the pickup “feels” the vibrations of the strings disrupting its magnetic field, and translates that into an electrical charge [ (Henshall, 2011) ]. “The basic science behind pickup function is Faraday's Law of Induction. It states that a changing magnetic field causes an electric field to be set up in a nearby wire, causing a current to flow if the wire is part of a closed circuit (a loop of wire for example)” [ (Wallace, 2004)...

The Assassination Of African Americans In Showdown By Wil Haygood

...In the prologue to his book Showdown, Wil Haygood states that even though slavery had ended, in the 1960s African Americans were still not free, and Marshall Thurgood, a prominent lawyer, fought for equality and eventually became the first African American to be nominated to the Supreme Court. Slaves were bought to the United States, who were later freed by Lincoln during the Civil War which ultimately led to his assassination. Although they were free citizens, African Americans' rights were extremely limited. They could not hold positions of power, go to the same schools as whites, or even vote without being persecuted. The National Association of the Advancement of Colored People was started in order to protect African Americans from the...

Goldman Sachs

...Goldman Sachs Stockholders The group and I have decided that Stockholders are fourth in line when it comes to importance. Stockholders are important to the Goldman Sachs because they’re the individuals and/or groups whom provide the initial capital for the corporation. Stockholders also meet annually to determine if the corporation is heading in the direction they want. If not, they can vote for new board of directors. Stockholders are mainly interested in how the company is managed in order to maximize the return on their investments. Also, stockholders are interested in how the managers and employees are behaving. If they’re behaving unethically, this could hurt the company’s reputation, putting the stockholders capital to waste. In terms of needs, stockholders need to know that the capital they invest is not wasted in the long run. They expect the business to be highly profitable, and to be honest with them. Stockholders also expect to have some level of control over the board. This was if members are not performing as expected. Stock holders also expect greater protection of investment, as well as greater returns. When Goldman Sachs was hit with all the legal woes, stockholders called a meeting to clarify what should and shouldn’t be done. At the meeting the stockholders had a number of proposals that would need votes to determine the outcome. Among them: executive compensation, collateral increases for derivatives trading and splitting the chairman/CEO position (Washington...

Detecting Media Bias

...Detecting Media Bias Detecting Media Bias The recent news article I have chosen is the standoff that is happening in Southern Nevada between the Federal Government and Cliven Bundy, a local rancher. The Federal Government claims that Bundy has not paid grazing fees for the last 20 years, Bundy feels that he does not have to because his family have worked the land since the 1880’s, which would give him rights to the land (Fox News, 2014) . The report by Fox News on their website appeared to be accurate, but it was clear that they were definitely siding more with Mr. Bundy than with the Federal Government. There were only comments and statements from Mr. Bundy himself or his supporters. When I checked the same story at CNN’s website, they had statements from both side of the issue. The report mentions how Bundy’s family called for assistance from Militia and his supporters after a couple acts of violence from law enforcement, his son was shot with a stun gun and his sister was pushed to the ground. There was no mention in the Fox new report, that the Bundy family and their supporters confronted rangers, and that a police dog was kicked and officers being assaulted, incidences that were reported on the CNN website (CNN, 2014). The report is clearly only reporting and favoring one side of the story, where as other news agencies are reporting a more balanced story. The Fox news report is putting a lot of emphasis on to the rights and treatment of Mr. Bundy, stating...

Lol Game

...League of Legends is a multiplayer online battle arena where players control a "champion"[6] in order to be matched in a short PvP battle or bot game. As of February 27, 2014, there are 118 different Champions from which to choose. Players gain levels from killing the opposing team's Champions, controlled by other players or bots, and minions that regularly spawn and attack the other team's turrets, minions, and champions. In the classic game mode, the map is typically divided into "lanes", which are paths that spawned minions take, the "jungle", an area between lanes where neutral monsters spawn, and "bases", where players spawn and can purchase items. The primary map, Summoner's Rift, features three lanes, commonly referred to as top lane, where bruisers (partially damage, partially tanky) and tank type champions tend to go. Mid lane, where assassins and burst damage carries tend to go, and bot lane, where the ranged DPS (damage per second) carries and their supports tend to go. The jungle is sometimes considered a lane, where an assassin or tank champion tends to roam in order to collect buffs and assist in the other lanes freely. The player earns a small amount of gold every second passively, but can earn more by getting the last hit on minions, destroying enemy towers (referred to as turrets) that guard the lanes, neutral monsters located in the jungle, and killing enemy champions. With this gold, users can buy a variety of items to strengthen their champion for the duration...

High Noon Themes

...of this she was staunchly against murder and violence. This makes her decision to help her husband in the showdown between him and Miller by killing one of the latter's cronies and knocking him off-balance so Kane could shoot more impactful. In both cases, the characters gave up their morals in order to kill. At first glance, the settings of High Noon and The Most Dangerous Game seem to be completely different (aside from the time period they were set in, which was the 1800s). However, it turns out that they do share a few similarities. In the former's script, the setting is described as so: "The street seems empty except for him, but [Kane] has the feeling that eyes are watching him" (Foreman 85). This emphasises how alone Kane is in his quest; people are around, but they either abandon him or are against him. Rainsford is in a similar situation, except even the environment is trying to kill him. In both settings, the protagonists are made unwelcome. Both settings are also manipulatable by the protagonists and antagonists to their advantages. Rainsford made various traps using the resources on the island, including a Burmese tiger pit in Death Swamp. "With flying fingers he wove a rough carpet of weeds and branches and with it he covered the mouth of the pit" (Connell 21). Although Zaroff wasn't caught, one of his dogs was. During Kane's and Miller's showdown, Kane used buildings in the town to protect himself from bullets and find a place to snipe. Miller himself...

The Us Versus China: Who Shall Have Dominance in the Pacific Ocean?

...The US versus China: Who shall have dominance in the Pacific Ocean? Christopher Wade HIS220 March 5th, 2016 Will Palmer The United States versus China: Who shall have dominance in the Pacific Ocean? In the twenty-first century, there has been an escalation of naval supremacy in the Pacific Ocean. World War Two had been a proving ground for American maritime dominance. The United States Navy has reigned in the Asia-Pacific waters since the dropping of the H-Bomb on Hiroshima. Yet, the proud nation of China is ready to show that they are ready to see who has the true right to rule. The escalating conflict between China and Japan influenced U.S. relations with both nations. From the onset American officials viewed China with equivocation. They opposed Japan’s incursions into northeast China because of their longstanding friendship with the Chinese. Yet, some still believed that there was no vital interest worth going to war with Japan over. Moreover, the civil war in China left policymakers uncertain of which side to lend support to. (Japan, China, the United States and the Road to Pearl Harbor, 1937–41) . On July 7th, 1937 when Chinese and Japanese forces clashed on the Marco Polo Bridge near Beijing, throwing the two nations into a full-scale war, the likelihood of U.S. aid was increased. Tensions rose when the U.S.S Panay was bombed and three Americans were killed. The conflict was avoided because the government accepted Japan’s apology and indemnity. (Japan...

Examples Of Trope In True Grit

...The first common western trope used in True Grit is the good guy vs. bad guy. In this film, there are several “good guys.” First, there is Rooster whom at first seems mysterious and cold. However, his bravery and nobility shine through as he rescues Mattie from the snake pit and and tirelessly carries her to safety after her horse falters. The other obvious good guy is LaBouef, who returns to helps to rescue both Mattie & Chaney towards the end of the movie. Our two protagonists spend the movie hunting down the “bad guys”, who in this film are Chaney (the heartless renegade who murdered Mattie’s dad), and Ned (his boss and fellow renegade). The second common trope used in this movie is a final showdown. In a grassy pasture, Rooster comes face...

Attitude and Behavior

...good attitude can foster good emotions from the same events. Along the same lines, opposite emotions can alter mood if kept around too long, but the contradiction usually makes them last a much shorter time. For instance, someone in a good mood would be effected less by a biting remark from a passerby than someone already in a poor mood. They both may have the same emotional reaction, but the person in a good mood would likely shrug it much faster than the person in a bad mood. Personality and values are another area that effect human behavior. Personality is seen as a semi-permanent set of behaviors associated with a particular person and how they interact with the world and other people in it. The Type A vs. Type B personality showdown has person with Type A exhibiting certain behaviors that the person with Type B does not. These behaviors are not always mutually exclusive, there can be a fair amount of overlap, but personality is generally seen as semi-permanent. There are certain trends in personality that you see in people. For instance, as people age, they tend to mellow out and not react so strongly to things that effect them as younger people. There are several competing ways to classify different personality types. Personality is generally thought to be something that is ingrained and less taught to you. Values, though, are the internal driving factors that effect how a person reacts to events and can even help direct how a person thinks. Values are...

China vs India (Politics)

...States will be discussed. A political regime is an assembly of political structures that make up a government. This helps in regulating the management of the government and building of the society. The three ways how the government can choose to run the country are via, One-Party State, Liberal Democracy or Military Dictatorship. China and United States have the world’s biggest economies and effective militaries with their ruling influencing politics globally. Even with a huge trade agreement and countless diplomatic meetings, the both countries are unable to sustain a façade of a civil relationship. Though, there is pressure from leaders of United States, China is not discouraged but instead continues to grow its economy. (Super-power showdown - US vs. China, 2012) China follows a One-Party State political system. It is led by a highly controlling communist party. The Chinese Communist Party is fully committed in upholding endless domination in power and will not tolerate others who doubt its right to rule. Freedom of speech is strictly constrained. The Chinese Communist Party dictates both state and society in China. They have been ruling China for over six decades, ever since they gained power in 1949. There are no elections in China. Gay Marriage

...Robert Tiers Professor Redman-Waldeyer December 1, 2011 Gay Marriage When two people, any two people, are in love, they should be able to openly express their love for each other by becoming married. However, not everyone is legally able to get married. A love shared by two people of the same sex cannot be binding because of petty laws that prohibit gay and lesbian couples to get married. It is ridiculous that two people in love cannot get married and commit to a lifetime together if they are of the same sex. Love is love. Love knows no boundaries, no limi Many people in today’s society believe gay and lesbian marriage is wrong, and if you are one of them, I am here to convince you otherwise. Gay marriage ensures homosexual couples the symbolic, financial, and medical benefits that heterosexual couples enjoy. The institution of Marriage ensures all its partakers, security. Same sex marriage affords homosexual couples the same security, be it financial, medical, or emotional, as heterosexual couples. Many are in favor of equal rights for homosexuals. Just name the situation, and ask. They'll all say yes, gays should have the same rights in housing, jobs, public accommodations, and should have equal access to government benefits, and equal protection of the law. Nearly 70% of people in the U.S. oppose gay marriage, almost the same proportion as are otherwise supportive of gay rights. This means that many of the same people who are passionately in favor of gay rights...
