...North and South Korea While there are similarities between North and South Korea, there are a ton of differences. These differences can make a person wonder how these countries ever operated as one. After World War II, they drew separate splitting down the 38th parallel line. With the soviets having an influence on the North side and the United States having an influence on the South side they became two different governments and countries. From the government, the people, and the rights they are totally opposites. In South Korea the government is a democracy, just like the U.S. with the executive, judicial, and legislative branches. North Korea, however, has a form of communism called dictatorship. The way that this country is run is seen by many people as a corrupt and crude way of leading a country. With millions of people starving everyday and the government not doing anything about it, it has a lot of people disgusted with this country. The people of South Korea are like average people[KE1] ; going to school and work with no worries about going home and not being able to eat. South Korea’s people are an average 2 inches taller than North Koreas people. The nutrition of North Koreas people from, mal-nutritious caused them to be shorter than their southern neighbors. The sad part is that government doesn’t even care. There are many countries who would love to help give food to the North Koreas; however, the ridiculous government blocks the boarders, so that South Koreas...

...“Cold War”. In 1961, the United States government requested $207.6 million for use with the fallout shelter program which would be used to identify shelters that already existed, provided supplies for the shelters as well as improving the overall preparation of citizens and communities. It should be noted that $207.6 million would be the equivalent of $1.7 billion today (Rothman, 2017). To put it another way, this was the focus of security of the homeland during this period known as the “Cold War”. Fallout Shelters Today: As we fast forward to today, we now find ourselves in a very similar situation even though decades have passed. As an example, our Department of Defense [DOD] requested a $686 billion budget and noted increased risks on the part of North Korea, China and Russia as the reasoning for one of the largest defense budgets ever (Macias, 2018). We now find ourselves in a situation where we have renewed threats from foreign governments, not to mention the on-going threat from terrorist organizations and homegrown terrorists who wish to do harm to our country and our citizens....

...Bringing Western Culture to South Korea via Nursing Home, Plastic Surgery, Clothing and Makeup Jacob Schwarz Executive Summary My reason for writing this study is to determine the feasibility of building a nursing/retirement home, a plastic surgery outpatient center, and a cosmetic and clothing store in Seoul, South Korea. In my opinion, South Korea is welcoming to this venture; this can be seen in the upcoming research. In this report, I explore the geography of Seoul, South Korea. I learn of the growing, large, population and the population density of 45,000 people per square mile (“Population Statistics,” 2013). Next, I review the demographics and find out that minority groups consist of 2.2% of the population (Population Statistics, 2013). While reviewing the demographics I found that the education system is extremely strict; though it is more lenient now, it is still success driven (Chakrabarti, 2013). I also found that religion is not going to be an issue with this venture, in my opinion. There are two major religions; the major Christian religion will be implemented in the venture (Koo, n.d.). Education and demographics are important to a global business venture, though I believe the economy is most important. I present information about South Korea’s economy, and how it has transformed from an aid recipient to a donor country (Globalization, n.d.). Here is where I mention the chaebol’s success, which accounted for 55.7% of South Koreas GDP in 2010 (Globalization, n...

...Modern Totalitarianism. In the 1940s through the 1960s, the world lived in a time of war. In September 1939 World War II broke out , and was followed by the Cold War of 1947 that lasted up until 1991. The historic wars of these times influenced literature and the writers of the time, as they shaped their novels and books around these events. Writers such as George Orwell and Kurt Vonnegut created novels of dystopian societies to alert nations that communism was not as great as it sounded. British writer George Orwell wrote the novel 1984 published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc. in 1949. 1984 is a political novel written with the purpose of warning readers in the West of the dangers of totalitarian government. In 1949, the Cold War had not yet escalated, and many Americans supported communism as possible political systems for the west. Therefore, Orwell wrote his novel in order to expose the cruelty and oppression of communist countries. In his dystopian nation, Orwell gave a sneak peak of what a country could become if the people gave all the power to the government. In 1984, Orwell portrays the perfect totalitarian society in which the government monitors and controls every aspect of human life to the extent that having a disloyal thought is against the law. They do so with the use of technology such as tele screens and microphones across the city which allowed the government to monitor all the citizens almost all of the times. In order to keep the citizens of London...

...It’s Time Obamacare begins its main act The Prince, an excellent writing by Niccolò Machiavelli, who was born on May 3, 1469, in Florence, Italy; illustrates a practical guide for ruling. The Prince is dedicated to Lorenzo de’ Medici, the ruler of Florence. Machiavelli abstract tackles the way autocracy regimes rule, rather than republic. Base on The Prince, this essay is attempt to answer a critical question: how the tension between individual liberty and the common good is resolved in contemporary society? A great Prince (ruler) is whom can merge the gap between common goods without violating individual liberty; as Machiavelli would argue: the theme that obtaining the goodwill of the populace is the best way to maintain power. Goodwill is the crucial term to understand Machiavelli definition of a great ruler. Machiavelli introduction of The Prince is about the way Lorenzo should govern with absolute power, as military power is dominant. He proposed the advantage and disadvantage to attend various routes to power. The most important theme in his book is how a Prince should avoid hatred from his populace. This can directly relate to contemporary society. As Machiavelli suggested, it is not necessary for a Prince to be love, but hatred is the downfall of a ruler. His realist’s argument point out that fears is the best alternative to sustain power; however, in modern society context, it doesn’t work anymore. How is his argument related to today context? The latest issue...

...Regarding the United States draft, poet Robert Frost remarked, “Pressed into service means pressed out of shape.” Although the United States has replaced a mixed army consisting of draftees and volunteers with an all-volunteer army, the Selective Service System still allows the government to draft suitable men between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five in case of a national emergency (Olson-Raymer, par. 48-50). When the United States invaded Iraq, hundreds of thousands of Americans voluntarily enlisted (par. 55). Despite the abundance of soldiers, military personnel claimed that there was a shortage of soldiers, and a draft would benefit the war effort (Thompson and Zabriskie, par. 7). Fortunately, the draft was not enacted and still remains...

...Events in Iraq have prompted some people on the left to make comparisons to the American experience in the Vietnam War. These people argue that the United States has put itself into an in-extractable “quagmire” from which there is no feasible withdrawal. This type of reasoning by historical comparison is not wise because no two historical events are completely alike. In the case of Iraq and Vietnam, extreme caution should be exercised in comparing two wars so far apart in historical circumstances, geography, and time. It becomes pretty obvious that the differences between the two conflicts greatly outnumber the similarities. This is especially true in the strategic and military dimensions of the two wars. There is simply no comparison between the environment, the scale of military presence, losses incurred over time, the quality of enemy resistance, the role and scope of enemy allies, and the duration of open warfare style combat. There are, however, two political parts of the Iraq and Vietnam wars that are similar in nature: our attempts at nation-building in a foreign culture, and our trying to sustaining domestic popular support in a long and drawn out war against insurgents. Policymakers should have an understanding of the reasons for U.S. political failure in South Vietnam, as well as for the Johnson and Nixon administrations’ failure to sustain popular support for the accomplishment of U.S. military objectives in Vietnam. A repeat of those failures in Iraq could have...

... And South Korea 대한민국 Introduction South Korea and Japan have had a close relationship from ancient history to the present day. Because of this reason, their economic growth and development have similarities and disparate differences. This paper will discuss some of the two countries’ major characteristics including geographic, social, and political characteristics and look at their histories and economies. Another reason that it is natural to compare them is their economic growth has mirrored one another. Both emerged from a war with its economy devastated and its infrastructure in ruins. Both countries changed with the economic climate of the time and took advantage of foreign investment in order to rebuild. Finally, both countries used their strengths to develop their economies to the point that they are world leaders in their field. Finally, both counties enjoy close political and economic relations with the United States, with each country being among our Top 10 largest trading partners. We have been a good friend to both, which has helped to stabilize relations in the regions between the two. Brief History (Since World War 2) The Korean Peninsula was occupied by Japanese forces for 35 years, from 1910 until the end of WW2 in 1945. Due to existing agreements, Japanese forces in Northern Korea surrendered to the Soviets and those in South Korea to the United States. The Korean War (1950-1953) was an attempt by communist North Korea (with China’s...

...at the eastern end of Asia, between China, Siberia (now part of the Russian Federation), and the islands of Japan. Because of the complex, shifting, and historic relations between these areas, as well as relations with other places such at the United Sates in more recent times, the history of Korea has been told in many ways and is still the subject of hot debate both inside and outside the Koreas. North and South Korea have different versions of the peninsula’s history, both of which differ in detail and perspective from histories written in China, Japan, Russia, and the USA. The following sections, which attempt to outline the history in a balanced way, are based on a variety of materials, including lectures attended in a special workshop on Korean culture at Korea University in the summer of 1997. Map of Korea The overall pattern of development in the history of the Korean peninsula is a process that begins with an unknown number of early tribal groups that populate the peninsula in prehistoric times, wandering out of Siberia and areas to the west. Over time, some of these groups form more complex societies that eventually result in early kingdoms that grow up on the peninsula; in some cases extending westwards into what is now Chinese territory. As time and events unfolded, these kingdoms were unified, though the borders and degree of unity have continued to change over time—down to today. Besides the obvious split between North and South Korea, cultural differences (including...

...leader in the private or political arena as well. After researching various leaders that had accomplished such task, I chose Colin L. Powell. Colin L Powell was born April 5 1937 in Harlem, New York. He is a United States statesman and a retired four-star general in the United States Army. He was the 65th United States Secretary of State (2001-2005), serving under President George W. Bush. He was the first African American appointed to that position. He was the first, and so far the only, African American to serve as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) (“Colin Powell”, 2013). Leader According to Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy (2009), leadership has various definitions that differ in many ways. One states that leadership can be defined as “Directing and coordinating the work of group members” and the other states it as “The process by which an agent induces a subordinate to behave in a desired manner (Chapter 1). While these and many other definitions outlined in Chapter 1 could describe and define General. Powell as leader, the definition that best fits is the “The process of influencing an organized group toward accomplishing its goals” (Hughes, Ginnett, & Curphy, 2009, Chapter 1). This strong leadership was evident during his tenure as Secretary of State. Secretary Powell won praise for his efficient...

...South Korea vs. the Philippines: A Paragon of Economic Development? Ruben Reyes GLS – 102-005 Professor Eijmberts April 28, 2015 A little over half a century ago, South Korea was under the colonial rule of Japan, while the Philippines was colonized by the United States. It was not until the late 1940s did both countries gain their independence. After decades of political strife, ranging from conventional war to guerrilla conflict against the United States, the Philippines gained their independence on July 4, 1946. It was when the United States signed the Treaty of Manila, annexing the Philippines, as it became an independent commonwealth (Philippine Independence). Meanwhile, approximately two and a half thousand kilometers north of the Philippines, Japanese oppression ran rampant in the Korean peninsula. It was only until, the US had dropped two atomic bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki did Japan withdraw their troops from the peninsula, ending the Second World War. Thus, on August 13, 1948, South Korea had attained full autonomy from Japan, commemorating the end of the thirty-five year Japanese occupation, and the formation of the South Korean republic (National Liberation Day 2012). Similarly, following the liberation from colonial rule, both nations had experienced political turmoil, or economic deterioration as a result of war. Just 5 years following the liberation of Korea, the communist North invaded the South thus ensuing the Korean War and truncating into...
