When the regimes they led brought prosperity only to the wealthy and complaints from the poor were met with political oppression, many Catholic priests stood alongside Marxist revolutionaries in criticizing the existing conservative order. Many of these priests, and even nuns, were assassinated by government-supported death squads. The Catholic Church, which took a strong anti-communist stance in Europe, grew alarmed at the seeming alliance between priests and Marxists in Latin America, and dismissed the priests’ claims that they were only doing as Christ would do in championing the interests of the poor. The priests hoped to make their case personally when Pope John Paul II visited Latin America in 1983. This site offers an eyewitness account by reform-minded Catholics of the pope’s meetings in Nicaragua in that year. ...Introduction The Roman Catholic Church is considered the largest of all Christian churches (Believe, 2007). Roman Catholicism is a branch of Christianity governed by the Bishop of Rome, the Pope. Today the Roman Church with the Pope, Archbishops, Cardinals, Monsignors, Priests, Deacons, and Nuns has become a huge global operation reaching almost every country in the world. This report will include a personal viewpoint gathered from an interview with a Roman Catholic follower and a recent visit to their church. In addition to the personal viewpoint on Roman Catholicism, this report will include researched facts on Roman Catholic beliefs and practices as well as a comparison between Catholicism and Islam. Although Catholics and Muslims have distinct beliefs and worshipping practices, they share similar fundamental principles. Church Visit Presentation BVM was the place of worship visited on Saturday May 29th, 2010 for Saturday Mass. The Church is located in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania at 100 Old Soldiers Road. The mass was conducted by the Pastor of the church, Father Harrison. The church service for this day was extremely interesting and was based on the concept of the Holy Trinity and its importance to honor this belief. This topic was fascinating because of the marvel in the doctrine of the Trinity. I was grateful that I attended this particular service as it helped with my uncertainty in comprehending the concept. The church was beautiful with many...

...The landmark I chose to discuss is the Norman Cathedral of Monreale, Sicily, Italy. The Monreale Cathedral was built in the 12th century, around 1174 to 1185 and commissioned by the Norman ruler of Sicily, William II. The purpose of the Cathedral was to show the majesty of William’s kingdom while representing the devotion the Normans had for the Virgin Mary. To this day, the church is known as one of the greatest examples of Norman culture and architecture in the world and is considered a national monument of Italy. When creating this church, William II employed a variety of men including Norman, Arabic and Byzantine craftsmen. This variety of skill sets resulted in a combination of architectural styles, artistic traditions and religious...

...As a child, I grew up in a religious Catholic environment, with my grandparents playing an active role in shaping my siblings and I’s religious views. From grade one to six, I attended catechism every Tuesday afternoon in order to complete my First Communion and Confirmation. In addition, my grandparents would teach me the common prayers such as the Our Father and the Hail Mary in English, French as well as Italian, the language I speak with them. They also taught me the fundamental pillars of the Catholic Church and we traveled to Italy a few summers ago together, where they showed my family and I the churches they would go to as well as the saints they venerated. Saints were important in my grandparents’ lives and I would get a phone call every time it was my “name day”, where Saint Sarah would be worshipped. As well, I learnt about the life and legacy of San Cataldo, as my grandmother said that when she was ill she prayed to him every single day, and...

...off are primarily male oriented and male driven. This essay will discuss the role and understanding of gender in Catholic Christian church. The essay will be concerned with women in these churches, and how different gender theories conform with the observations witnessed during my visit. In this essay, I look at the prevalence of male centrism during the Sunday mass in the Catholic church I visited to, using Mary Daly’s theory of patriarchy in religion and how women are being oppressed due to a male God and conclude the ways in which we know of Christianity of being a heavily patriarchal religion. Secondly in this essay I will also look at the use of language in the church and how language can be deciphered as symbolic and reflect gendered perspectives using Luce Irigaray’s theory of symbolism to conclude how the use of language reflect a gender biases and how it is one sided. When I visited the church on Sunday I was amazed to see the statues and images of Jesus in the entrance area. Once, inside the main area there is a huge crucifix in the altar where I could see the the image of Jesus. There were other statues of Jesus in the church and then there was the one statue of the Virgin Mary and the infant Jesus. Before the service began, there were male announcers who gave short speeches on the recent doings of the church and related matters. Being a Catholic church, the service was led by a senior male priest who was aided by other junior male priests. These priests were the people...

...Religion Report My New Experience with the Catholic Religion I am not a religious person and never really classified myself to be any religion. Growing up however, I did attend a Christian Church with my father every so often. I also attended vacation bible school every summer at Christian Churches so if I had to pick a religion I guess it would be Christianity. I believe in Heaven and Hell and I believe in Jesus Christ and God but I never attend church anymore. It is not that I would not like to but my fiancée and her family is Catholic and that is who I live by and who I am mostly with. Also, and not making excuses it is hard for me to attend church with two young children. My intentions for this assignment were to interview my half-brother who is very religious in the Christian religion but they live too far away and both our schedules are way too hectic. So I had to hurry and change my plans for this assignment. I knew that my fiancées side of the family is all Catholic so I asked the most religious of the family, which is my fiancées Aunt Carole. To research this paper, I interviewed my fiancés Aunt Carole. I do not often see her with both of our conflicting work schedules, but took advantage of a recent visit by asking her to attend a Catholic Sunday Mass with me. We stayed on after the Mass had concluded and I was able to interview regarding her views on the Catholic religion while we sat in at St. Andrews Catholic Church, which also happens to be where my fiancés...

...include Theravada Buddhism which is practiced in Sri Lanka and in South East Asia. Mahayana, Tibetan, and Shingon are other examples of Buddhism. The most prominent division in the Islam religion is between the Sunnites and Shi’ites. The first of the eight elements that these religions share is their belief system. They have a common belief or worldview of the universe and what place the human being’s have in it. Community means that this belief is shared and practiced by all its members or group. Central Myths are stories that express the beliefs of the community and are retold and often reenacted. An example of a Central Myth is the birth of Jesus Christ. In Christianity, this is an important story that is often reenacted by members of the church, in the form of a play on or before Christmas to remember his Grace and the miracle of his birth. Rituals are enacted and made real through...

...Family Health Assessment Nurses could view family as a client, as one unit with multiple individuals in different stages of transition including adults, adolescents, and small children. “A family is a set of interacting individuals related by marriage, blood, and adoption or by cohabitation interdependently perform relevant functions to fulfill expected role” (Edelman & Mandle2010). System theory helps nurses to view clients as participating members of a family. Developmental theory helps nurses to look at different phases of the family system and predict family transitions based on the norms. Gordon’s functional health patterns help nurses to assess and understand health patterns of their family as a whole functional unit that relates to their health needs, and modify nursing practice accordingly (Edelman & Mandle2010). Gordon’s 11 functional health patterns are values/ health perception, nutrition, sleep/rest, elimination, activity/exercise, cognitive, sensory- perception, self-perception, role relationship, sexuality, and coping. ...full file at http://testbankinstant.com CASE 1 Crafting & Executing Strategy 18th Edition 265 Mystic Monk Coffee Overview T his 4-page case requires that students consider the future direction of a monastery located in Clark, Wyoming and evaluate the vision, strategy, and business model of the monk’s fledgling coffee business. As the case unfolds, students will learn of Father Daniel Mary’s vision to build a new Mount Carmel in the Rocky Mountains and transform the small brotherhood of 13 monks living in a small home used as makeshift rectory into a 500-acre monastery that would include accommodations for 30 monks, a Gothic church, a convent for Carmelite nuns, a retreat center for lay visitors, and a hermitage. Father Daniel Mary had identified a nearby ranch for sale that met the requirements of his vision perfectly, but its listing price of $8.9 million presented a financial obstacle to creating a place of prayer, worship, and solitude in the Rockies. Father Daniel Mary hoped to fund the purchase of the ranch through charitable contributions to the monastery and through the profits of its Mystic Monk coffee business, which had earned nearly $75,000 during its first year of operation. Suggestions for Using the Case This case was written as a leadoff case and was carefully crafted by the case author to require students to draw upon most all of the concepts discussed in Chapters 1 and 2 to sufficiently prepare for a class discussion of the case...

...The Episcopal Church and My Reflections on Service Attendance History The earliest beginnings of what is now known as the Episcopal Church were rooted in the Church of England. St. Augustine of Canterbury in 597 C.E. established the formal beginnings of the church with papal authority. During the English Reformation of the 16th century, papal authority was thrown aside as the Church split and the separation of Protestantism and Catholic faith intensified when the crown of England assumed official rule of the Church. As colonization spread into the new world, so did the Anglican Church of England. Unfortunately, the Revolutionary War brought upheaval to the church and its followers. With the newly established separation of church and state, clergy abandoned the churches, returning to England and Canada. Eventually, there was also renaming of the Church as The Protestant Episcopal Church in 1783. Between 1789 and 1790, the American Church pursued the unification of all Episcopalians in the United States into one church. They adopted a constitution, set-up new canon laws, and even revised the Book of Common Prayer. Having its history in the liturgy, customs, and framework of medieval Catholicism, the Episcopal Church has maintained its connections to these early symbols of the religious experience. Their services include the Creeds and the use of the Book of Common Prayer, while asserting the primary role of the Bible. Within this one denomination there is an amalgam...
