The Hazards of Smoking Why do people smoke when they know it’s bad for them? Some people smoke for pleasure, while others do it because of stress. Teenagers smoke because their friends influence them. However, people should be more aware of the risks of smoking. People should not smoke for three reasons. One reason is smoking requires a personal budget because it costs money in several ways. First, some people pay up to $12 per day for cigarettes, so the total amount could be as much as $4, 380 per year. However, in that way, they spend their money without benefits. Another way that smoking is expensive is it costs people to pay for cleaning their clothes, car, furniture, and home because the smell of smoking easily sticks to everything around smokers. One more way it’s expensive is the cost health treatments caused by smoking. This is very expensive because people who smoke are more vulnerable to sickness, and they require medical checkups more often. The second reason that people shouldn’t smoke is it is unclean and even dangerous because it causes bad breath, stains the teeth and makes them yellow with time, and can start fires. These can be permanent effects that the smoker doesn’t want. Also, it affects house, hair, and clothes smell because of its bad odor. When people visit, they immediately notice the smell of smoke in the house. Furthermore, smoking causes burns on carpets, furniture, and car seats. This causes damage, but it also can be dangerous. Some people even smoke in bed and fall asleep, causing the house to catch on fire. Finally, people should be aware and not smoke because it can seriously harm their health. Smokers are often sick, tired, stressed, can’t exercise, and they don’t have the same energy which nonsmokers have. In addition, people around smokers are exposed to secondhand smoke, which is almost as dangerous as it is to smokers themselves, especially when that killer habit happens inside homes, cars, or closed public places. In fact, smoking is a major cause of lung cancer and all diseases of the heart and blood vessels like arteriosclerosis. It is clear that people should avoid unhealthy habits. Because it’s not clean, it’s expensive, and it can harm smokers’ and nonsmokers’ health, people should not smoke. Even though it may be fun and fashionable, people need to think about the future and not just the present moment.
