...Social networking sites (SNSs) are increasingly used by young people. Critically evaluate claims that their use can have negative effects on users. Recent years have witnessed the exponential increase of web-based social networks, also known as social networking sites (SNSs). By the end of 2011, there were approximately 2.3 billion people (around one third of the global population) using the Internet, and 1.03 billion (about 45%) of which have reported using a social networking site at least once a day (International Telecommunications Union, 2011:1). According to Papacharissi (2009:199), the increasing popularity and the growth of the leading SNSs such as Facebook, My Space, Twitter and LinkedIn are due to the fact that they offer users various platforms to create their own profiles to represent themselves to interact with each other through emails, instant messages and many other integrated communication tools. While a variety of definitions of the term SNS have been suggested, this essay will use the one first suggested by Boyd and Ellison (2007:210) who saw it as: “web-based services that allow individuals to construct a public or semi-public profile, communicate with other users with whom they share a connection and view and navigate through their own list of connections as well as those of others.” As more people are becoming SNS users, it could be argued that more negative than positive impacts on society and human relationships can be seen in daily life (Ybarra...

...9-709-426 REV: AUGUST 25, 2009 DAVID B. YOFFIE MICHAEL SLIND NITZAN ACHSAF LinkedIn Corp., 2008 Late in June 2008, a year and a half after becoming CEO of the online professional networking service LinkedIn, Dan Nye announced that a new funding round had given the company a $1 billion valuation. Investors, led by the private equity firm Bain Capital Ventures, had purchased a 5% stake in LinkedIn for $53 million. As a result, Nye now had ample resources to put toward accelerating his company’s already phenomenal growth. LinkedIn, based in Mountain View, California, had signed up more than 23 million users for its service, and that figure was increasing at a rate of 1.2 million new users per month.1 (See Exhibit 1 for information on LinkedIn’s membership growth.) Among members of the service were top executives at every company on the Fortune 500 list.2 “LinkedIn is now so prevalent and so valuable that you have to join it,” said Nye, a Harvard Business School graduate (Class of 1994) and a former executive at Advent Software and Intuit.3 Nye understood that LinkedIn, like the ambitious professionals whom it served, could not stand still. He had arrived at the company in February 2007, and since then LinkedIn had launched a European-based operation, opened up its platform to third-party software developers, and increased its head count from 60 to 310.4 A mere half-decade after its founding, the company had already turned profitable, and it was on track to bring in revenues...

...social networking sites 24/7. Spending too much time on these sites creates the potential of a more sedentary lifestyle, becoming more egocentric, and withdrawing from activities and relationships. Social networking sites help connect us with the world, but with all that convenience and information comes a new set of social issues. In Introduction to Digital Literacy, Bowles (2013) gives in depths look at Web 2.0, its tools, and its significance. Web 2.0 gives us the ability to blog, tweet, email, and generally interact with others by using our computers or mobile devices. Bowles goes into some great detail about how to use social networking sites properly, protect one’s privacy, and the computer slang that has now become a part of the English language. While the exciting and wonderful world of social networking is celebrated, it is also mentioned that there is a dark side. One must be discrete and private about information they choose to share on social networking sites. Bowles (2013) cautions and educates one about social networking while making one aware that the positives offset the negatives. One of the main ways we use computer technology is through social networking. Over the years we’ve encountered Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Pinterest, Instagram, Classmates, Vine, and so many more. It’s the quickest and easiest way to connect to...

...stay in touch with each other Social networking web sites help people keep in touch with old friends, make new friends, distribute new data or product, and many more aspects of our everyday lives. We define social network sites as web-based services that allow individuals to: (1) Construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system. (2) Articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) View and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system. The nature and nomenclature of these connections may vary from site to site. HOW DOES ‘SNS’ WORK While SNSs have implemented a wide variety of technical features, their backbone consists of visible profiles that display an articulated list of Friends who are also users of the system. Profiles are unique pages where one can type oneself into being. After joining an SNS, an individual is asked to fill out forms containing a series of questions. The profile is generated using the answers to these questions, which typically include descriptors such as age, location, interests, and an "about me" section. Most sites also encourage users to upload a profile photo. Some sites allow users to enhance their profiles by adding multimedia content or modifying their profile's look and feel. Others, such as Facebook, allow users to add modules (Applications) that enhance their profile. The public display of connections is a crucial component of SNSs. The Friends list contains links...
