...Leadership Reflection Assignment The ability to lead is a quality that many people posses, or wish to possess, but is a quality that is very difficult to define in one specific way. Many different people lead in many different ways, and this makes it nearly impossible to assign the term leadership with a set, universal definition since there isn’t a set, defined way to universally lead a group. The individuals involved and the situation they are involved in are what help to define leadership. According to Robert Crandall, Chairman and President of American Airlines, in McFarlane, Senn, and Childress’ article “Redefining Leadership for the Next Century,” “The ideal leader for the 21st century will be one who creates an environment that encourages everyone in the organization to stretch their capabilities and achieve a shared vision, who gives people the confidence to run farther and faster than they ever have before, and who establishes the conditions for people to be more productive, more innovative, more creative, and feel more in charge of their own lives than they ever dreamed they could.” Although this is a great definition of the term, I believe leadership can be much more simply defined. To me, leadership is the ability to bring out the best in every individual involved in the group in an effort to enhance the overall quality of the team’s performance. Although I already had a definition similar to this in mind before engaging in the compass program, this course has...

...Thomas Edison once stated, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” Although many know about my accomplishments, not very many people know about the perseverance it took, and how many times I failed. For me, perseverance is critical to being successful, and I learned that through my soccer experiences. Before my senior year, I had been playing soccer for about ten or eleven years – which was a long time for many varsity players – and never played on varsity. Even my JV coach in eleventh grade did not play me often, thinking I was not good enough. After all the hard work I had put in to playing soccer, I was wondering whether I should continue my pursuit for a varsity spot. If I did not qualify for varsity this year, I would be cut. Many of my friends, who had been playing soccer for eight to ten years, began to quit, scared away by the coaches and the though of being cut. My parents even asked me to quit soccer, thinking that it would just be a waste of time. However, I also thought about my love for soccer and how I wanted to make the team better in any way. I believed that if I worked hard enough and persisted through the pain, I could be on the varsity...

I am extremely dedicated to what I do and always make an effort to use my abilities with commitment in both my personal and professional life. Partaking in athletics has had an extremely positive influence in my life and my development as a person. It has help build my character, has helped shape my identity and prepare me for the difficulties of the social life. I practiced martial arts for over 8 years and have been playing soccer since I was five. Both forms of art have shaped my identity by making me more social, a leader, and open minded about diversity. For one thing, soccer in particular, has taught me cooperation and teamwork. It has taught me how to be a good leader and to work well under pressure. The part I am most proud of is that now with all the knowledge I have acquired I can help spread my knowledge and help my community. My biggest accomplishment per se is that as the captain of my high school varsity team, I guided my team to the quarterfinals of the C.I.F(California Interscholastic Federation) has been the most rewarding experience. Most importantly I was selected as one of the top ten player of the C.I.F 2011-2012 Boys Soccer. These experiences and great accomplishments gave me the confidence to volunteered...

...what would be the culmination of my high school cross country career. Hearing my heartbeat in my ears, remaining steady with deep breaths, I tried to recall what had inspired me to end up here. Nearly three years earlier, I had a similar case of nervous energy, as I waited to begin a much different challenge. Deciding that I wanted to take part in my school's cross country team, I had never ran over a mile before by choice. After playing soccer my freshman year, my family and friends convinced me to run, to keep me conditioned for the next season. I didn't realize how much work would be necessary to earn a spot competing. At first, my goal was simply not to die, as that's what...

Overall, I feel that Capsim taught me that I am good at motivating people to give their best effort when I am a leader. However, I also learned in Capsim that there are aspects of my leadership skills that could be improved. I think that I could still improve my confidence as a leader. I still am sometimes unsure of myself when I am asked to lead groups of people that I am not very familiar with, but I think that this simulation was a big step in terms of me gaining confidence and growing as a leader. I tried to use many of the same aspects of leadership in this simulation group as I did when I was the captain of my high school soccer team. I was a very confident and passionate leader for my soccer team because soccer is one of my passions and because I was very knowledgeable about my teammates. I understood...

...The nature versus nurture issue of sport is very controversial. When we come to talk about great athletes we tend to ask ourselves a question that has been around every since sports have started- are great athletes born or made? From my experiences, and other professional athlete’s experiences, I can tell you that they are made. I believe that you can achieve anything life if you want it bad enough, and are willing to do everything you can to achieve it. For instance, NBA great Reggie Miller of the Indiana Pacers is an un-athletic, skinny person who overcame leg deformities as a child that prevented him from walking. He had to wear leg braces for several years until his leg problems were corrected enough for him to start walking again. Eventually, Miller went on to play in the NBA for 13 seasons, while setting the record for most 3-point shots made (Beyond the Glory: Reggie Miller 2004). Therefore, in my opinion, Miller was not a “born” athlete. I feel that he worked hard to develop his skill, and make it into the NBA. On the other hand, many people believe that genetics make up good athletes. They believe that people are born with the ability to become a great athlete. For instance, people believe that Reggie Miller was born with genes that would make him a good basketball player since he was born with potential to grow tall. Miller is now 6’6, and almost every great basketball player surpasses the height of 6’4. Therefore, being tall gives you an advantage in basketball,...

...integrity by completing my assignments on time, and by not cheating or plagiarizing from the works of my peers. In my high school career, I have never been suspended for any reason. My teachers and peers can attest to the fact that during and outside of class I am respectful and do not cause disturbances or concerns. I maintain my character by keeping myself honest and working to the best of my abilities to show my capabilities academically and socially. Leadership is one of the most important qualities a student-athlete could have in order to succeed both academically and athletically. I was elected captain of the Varsity soccer team by my coaches, because I demonstrated to them that I was willing to help my teammates and I was capable of leading bringing our team together. That season my co-captain and I would lead the team through warm-ups, assist with demonstrations from the coaches, and bring an exciting and positive attitude to the team. Although our team did not win any games, my co-captain and I were able to keep the team motivated to keep playing, and we demonstrated that keeping a positive attitude was important. I lead by example, when our team was losing badly, I would continue to keep the positive attitude that I started the game with and encouraged my teammates to do the same. Sports are not the only place where I demonstrate leadership, I am also a leader in the classroom. I am willing to help classmates who don’t understand a topic as well as I do. I have been able to...

...The World Cup is an international spectacle that has the ability to bring excitement to all corners of the world. The World Cup has always been an example of globalization, because, essentially, globalization is the transforming of a local happening or product into a global happening or product. According to the governing body of football, the Fédération Internationale de Football Association, “The FIFA World Cup™ in South Africa is an international event with great historic importance to the African continent. It will be the first FIFA World Cup ever to be hosted in Africa since the competition began in 1934, and I am convinced that Africa is ready to welcome this momentous FIFA World Cup with open arms. I am also convinced that the host nation, South Africa, will be up to the task, not least because it has abundant potential and resources (#1)” Given all of this information, one cannot deny that the World Cup is an obvious example of globalization, and the 2010 World Cup in South Africa will be Africa’s greatest display of Globalization to date. In order to accurately access South Africa as a site for a huge international event such as the World Cup 2010, one must first look at the various social problems that are existent in South Africa. When looking at any African country, the fact that most African countries have only been independent for less than a century must be factored into any assessment. The majority of African countries have a number of social problems...

...pupils in Tokyo and among Western sailors in Kobe in 1871. The officially recognised date for the birth of football in the country is in September 1873 with a game at the Naval Academy in Tokyo Bay organized by a British officer, Archibald Douglas, and his men. The amused Japanese spectators assumed it was a version of kemari, an ancient Japanese ballgame connected with the Shinto religion. The first competitive match in the country is reputed to be the 1888 game between the Kobe Regatta and Athletic Club and the Yokohama Country and Athletic Club, a rivalry that continues to the present day. It was not until 1921, however, that the Japanese Football Association (JFA) was established. After reports reached London of the All Japan Schools Soccer Tournament held in Osaka in 1918, the English FA magnanimously dispatched a replica of the FA Cup as a gift to the fledgling footballing cousin . There was no equivalent Japanese football organization to receive it, so one was created. Fifteen years later, Japan was represented at the Berlin Olympics with a team mostly made up of college students. Japan lost, and with it the chances of the sport gaining similar levels of popularity it was now enjoying in Europe. Baseball took the lead from this time, with a formal...

...Core Values Adults always tend to tell children that everyone’s unique; No two people are the same. Throughout my life, I’ve learned that the reason everyone is different is because every person has different morals and values. When I was first asked about my top three core values, I was speechless. I had never really just sat down and thought about what characteristics were most important to me. But after completing a class assignment titled, “My Core Values,” I was able to find out what my top three personal core values are. The three core values that relate to myself the most are responsibility, challenge, and justice. They University’s core values, on the other hand, seem to be mostly different. They are responsibility, excellence, servant leadership, integrity, and generosity. Even though my core values seem different than my schools, I believe they all have a very common underlying message. Responsibility, in my opinion, is one of the most important traits a person can have; therefore it’s definitely in my list of top three core values. Being responsible means doing things you have to do, even when you do not want to. This allows other people to trust you. People then often link responsibility with another core value: trustworthiness. Responsibility can be something as simple as watching your little sister, or as complex as being responsible for other people’s lives, such as a pilot of a plane. If you are not responsible, people will often not believe what you say, and...

...typically needed in football games.Riddell, a former high school teacher and football coach, founded the company John T. Riddell in 1929. He had invented a removable shoe cleat during his time as a football coach, and his next goal was to improve the football helmet. In 1939 he developed a plastic helmet, which was first used in a college football all-star game that year. A chinstrap was added to the design in 1940. While possibly better at protecting the head than leather models, the earliest plastic helmets had several problems. Screw ends poked through the outside of the helmet, making collisions between players very dangerous. In addition, during World War II (1939–1945) plastic available for civilian (nonmilitary) uses was often of low quality. Helmets made during this period were more likely to crack or...

...Men’s sports are going to seem more exciting as they have higher production values, higher-quality coverage and higher-quality commentary. When watching women’s sports, there are fewer camera angles, cuts to shot and instant replays so it’s going to seem like a slower game and become less appealing to the public. Furthermore, spectators have acknowledged that elite female athletes are simply not equal to their male counterparts in terms of physical ability as the difference is visible and impossible to ignore. Women’s sports that are identical to men’s sports – soccer and basketball, for example – will never be popular because men are faster, stronger and more athletic. On the other hand, sports that highlight the different strengths of female athletes – tennis, gymnastics, ice skating – are...
