Not only social workers, but many other groups of professionals, agencies, bodies of government, and more adhere to ethical guidelines set forth in the National Association of Social Work (NASW) Code of Ethics with embedded core values to encourage ethical decision making with accountability. It is the Code of Ethics that guides professional responsibility “to enhance human well-being and help meet the basic human needs of all people, with particular attention to the needs and empowerment of people who are vulnerable, oppressed, and living in poverty” (Workers, 2008). At this present time, not all Americans are covered with some type of health insurance, which lacks inequality of social and economic justice with the lack of diversity. There are those who have chosen to pay the financial penalties instead of being covered for various financial or “freedom of choice” (Sorrell, 2012) beliefs, the ones who qualify for various exemption reasons, and the ones who are still falling through the cracks in regards to Medicaid qualifications because various states have not been compliant with the program’s expansion. There are also, immigrants who are not legal citizens of America. This means that there are currently about five million people who remain without insurance coverage. “President Obama went too far in saying the Affordable Care Act meant ‘everybody’ would have ‘basic health care’” (Fact Check, 2014), but in actuality the ACA has not created a “universal health care system” (Fact Check, 2014) that is diversified with social and economic justice. The ACA needs to be transformed not only to provide quality and affordable health care that ensures equal allocations to all citizens, but needs to exemplify economic fairness with everyone sharing in the cost. It is also, imperative that the government takes into consideration society’s basic values, morals, and human rights, which exemplifies both social and economic justice through a health care system that is universal for all
