...BIG DATA ANALYTICS WITH TWITTER Aug 23, 2012 Marti Hearst & Gilad Mishne WHAT IS TWITTER? TWITTER AS CULTURAL PHENOMENON Some 15% of online adults use Twitter as of February 2012, and 8% do so on a typical day. Although overall Twitter usage has nearly doubled since the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project first asked a stand-alone Twitter question in November 2010, the 15% of online adults who use Twitter as of early 2012 is similar to the 13% of such adults who did so in May 2011. At the same time, the proportion of online adults who use Twitter on a typical day has doubled since May 2011 and has quadrupled since late 2010—at that point just 2% of online adults used Twitter on a typical day.1 The rise of smartphones might account for some of the uptick in usage because smartphone users are particularly likely to be using Twitter. ...submission Evaluation of the ideas The report analyzes the degree of innovativeness of the ideas proposed in the group presentation. It uses the NAF [Novelty, Attractiveness & Feasibility study] approach to assess the ideas presented in the presentation. I chose the approach because it is simple to use and strategic in the idea selection process. Each idea presented in the essay should be scored 1-10 for the following three aspects: 1. Novelty – it concerns how novel the idea is and the degree of novelty determines its creativity 2. Attractiveness – it ascertains the attractiveness of the idea. For instance, does it absolutely solve the existing problem? Or is it just a fractional solution. 3. Feasibility/Practicability – how feasible is the idea in being put into practice? Is it really feasible? (Bradac & Rebernik, n.d., p 44) Part One Part one of the essay presents the idea social programs and diverse activities. In this part, I will evaluate two concepts, first the social program and the CATWOE analysis approach using the model. Social Programs According to Laughlin (2011, p 22), the return of corporate benefits to the community is one of the most important policies of Samsung. For purposes of sustaining these social welfare programs, the company normally requires its employees to voluntarily participate in these programs. I will carry out an analysis of the social welfare as presented in the essay as one of the critical ideas. At first...

...Associate degree nurses The National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice (NACNEP), policy advisors to Congress and the Secretary for Health and Human Services on nursing issues, has urged that at least two-thirds of the nurse workforce hold baccalaureate or higher degrees in nursing by 2010. Baccalaureate Nursing Program Baccalaureate nursing programs encompass all of the course work taught in associate degree and diploma programs plus a more in-depth treatment of the physical and social sciences, nursing research, public and community health, nursing management, and the humanities. The additional course work enhances the student’s professional development, prepares the new nurse for a broader scope of practice, and provides the nurse with a better understanding of the cultural, political, economic, and social issues that affect patients and influence health care delivery. There are distinct differences between the 72 ADN credits and 125 BSN credits required in each of the nursing programs' curriculum. The baccalaureate curriculum has a different focus, emphasizing evidenced-based clinical practice and leadership. Additional courses are offered in the baccalaureate curriculum, such as research, statistics, critical thinking, and public health/community health. In addition, the additional units prepare the baccalaureate nurse to pursue graduate study, leading to an advanced degree in nursing. Baccalaureate nursing programs encompass all of the course work taught...

...inpatient care to more primary and preventive care throughout the community. The health system requires registered nurses who not only can practice both within and beyond hospitals but can function with more independence in direct bedside care, clinical community environment, case management, supervision of unlicensed other support personnel, and educating patients on treatment. The focus will be on the differences in competency between ADN and BSN nurses in this paper. Associate Degree Nurse The associate degree level of nursing was developed out of a need to produce nurses in response to a shortage during and following World War II. It was proposed as a temporary solution to a shortage but was not intended to replace the professional level of nursing education. It was proposed that graduates from associate degree nursing programs would work a“technical” nurses, assisting and working under the supervision of professional nurses. The associate degree level of nursing education became popular and has come to be viewed as an attractive career path for those who desire a shortened, less expensive route to becoming a registered nurse 1. Nursing Program Associate degree programs, located in community colleges, require a minimum to two year of full-time study with a reasonable balance in liberal arts and natural, social, and behavioral sciences and the other half in nursing courses. 2. Education The Associate Degree focuses more on technical skills than theory and provide opportunities...

Eighteen patients and eighteen registered nurse participants from across the health center and the nurse participants were females aged 26-58 years old. Patient participants are in relation to age, gender and socioeconomic status. Data was collected using non-participant observation and informal and semi-structured interviews. Each observation was looking at the interaction between a patient and a nurse. The informal interviews commenced after data from twenty of the observations was obtained. Twelve patients and twelve nurses, whose interaction had been observed, were interviewed and the resultant data developed the analysis. A theoretical sample of six patient and...

...NRS- 430 V Professional Dynamics THE CONTRIBUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN NURSING 2 Nursing in today’s day and age is a profession that is both rewarding and demanding. With increased pressure on hospitals to provide clinically sound medical care while functioning as a business, nurses are at the forefront of providing patient safety in a business environment. America depends on both two and four year institutions of higher education to prepare nurses, who will be working side by side in the healthcare environment. As a result of nursing job growth and projected retirement rates, it is estimated that America will need one million additional Registered Nurses by 2018 (Fulcher, Mullin, 2011). With strong evidence that a Baccalaureate degree in nursing improves patient outcomes, the IOM recommends 80% of nurses have a BSN by the year 2020. Evidence clearly suggests a relationship between a baccalaureate education and improved patient outcomes (Sarver, Cichra & Cline, 2015). One difference that may contribute to competency differences between ADN and BSN programs is number of credit hours obtained while in school. BSN programs require 120 credit hours whereas ADN programs require 71.5 (Fulcher, Mullin, 2011). Thus, the amount of hours spent learning is greatly reduced in an ADN program. One can infer that more school hours contributes to deeper understanding and knowledge. Hospitals that employ higher rates of nurses with BSN’s have a correlation with a decrease in mortality...

...However, the degree to which organizational demography was representative of community demography was positively related to civility experienced by patients and ultimately enhanced organizational performance” (King et al., 2011:1103). However, this study provides first empirical test to examine incivility that may emerge if organizations don’t reflect demography of the communities (King et al., 2011:1104). The study begins by reviewing theories of diversity from sociological and psychological point of view and then describing and testing a proposed six hypotheses related to civility, quality of service and usage of resources. The study shows measures, statistical analyses then discussed findings and consequences The authors studied the interactions of ethnic diversity individuals utilizing two major theories: social identity theory (Tajfel & Turner, 1979) and theory of social structure (Blau’s 1977). Thus, the core process of the relationship between ethnic diversity and the organizational performance is considered. They conducted this study on a particular organization entity which is in health care field. After that, they applied analysis for 142 hospitals in the United Kingdom utilizing a set of national available data sets such as employee and patient surveys, census data and organizational performance (King et al., 2011:1103) 1 This research based on an empirical investigation study using sampling data collection method and a quantitative data analysis that known as...

...naïve and did not think about the future of my career. There are 3 different ways to become a registered nurse: a three year diploma program, a three year associate degree, and a four year baccalaureate degree. All three of these programs each prepare the RN at different levels. Nurses attain different competencies in each program. This paper will focus on the associate degree prepared nurse versus the baccalaureate degree prepared nurse. Baccalaureate nursing programs cover all of the content taught in an associate degree program with the addition of “a more in depth treatment of the physical and social sciences, nursing research, public and community health, nursing management, and the humanities. The additional course work enhances the student’s professional development, prepares the nurse for a broader scope of practice, and provides the nurse with a better understanding of the cultural, political, economic and social issues that affect patients and influence healthcare delivery” (Rosseter, 2014, p1). BSN programs focus on evidence-based clinical practice and leadership. Whereas, students in an ADN program focus on learning the technical skills of nursing needed to provide direct care to patients. The baccalaureate nurse is prepared to work with patients, including individuals, families, groups, communities, and populations across the lifespan and across the continuum of healthcare environments. The baccalaureate nurse understands and...

...Problem statement Social networks are nowadays considered by many academic and business experts as the next frontier of the ways in which communication is enacted by individuals in contemporary society. It is easy to infer how relevant are social networks in the private lives of many individuals. The social network Facebook has now experienced more than 1.5 nillion active users worldwide. This surge is justified in part by the ease through which social media users can interact instantaneously without the necessity to be in the same place, and in part by the fact that users enjoy themselves by using social networks on an extensive basis, as recognized by many experts. Online communities are made able to share content, comments and opinions directly,...

...Proceedings of the 42nd Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences - 2009 A Conceptual and Operational Definition of ‘Social Role’ in Online Community Eric Gleave University of Washington egleave@u.washington.edu Howard T. Welser Ohio University welser@ohio.edu Abstract Both online and off, people frequently perform particular social roles. These roles organize behavior and give structure to positions in local networks. As more of social life becomes embedded in online systems, the concept of social role becomes increasingly valuable as a tool for simplifying patterns of action, recognizing distinct user types, and cultivating and managing communities. This paper standardizes the usage of the term ‘social role’ in online community as a combination of social psychological, social structural, and behavioral attributes. Beyond the conceptual definition, we describe measurement and analysis strategies for identifying social roles in online community. We demonstrate this process in two domains, Usenet and Wikipedia, identifying key social roles in each domain. We conclude with directions for future research, with a particular focus on the analysis of communities as role ecologies. 1. INTRODUCTION Social life has moved online. From discussion boards, to wikis, to social networking sites, people do things together through digital communication. Those interactions leave behind complex records of who did what, when, under what context,...

I will also discussing the macro systems response to child maltreatment sexual abuse and delinquency and compare and contrast the application of functionalism and interactionist theory to poverty. Lastly, I will discuss the role and responsibility of the human service worker in the macro environment. Personal empowerment can be defined as the power within a person. It consequences in self-confidence, which means an individual is assuming his or her responsibilities; you have enough confidence to make decisions, and you realizes that you are in a position to change. The change could be anything, it could be to seek career advancement, work on a failing relationship or to become a better parent. Personal empowerment gives a person a better sense of responsibility and holds ourselves more accountable for the things we do. It is meant to make us better individuals. Interpersonal empowerment is when a organization or a person work together to meet their targets. The combined power of the group will help all of the members to achieve their goals. Each member will contribute, understand, and support their other group members to increase their collective empowerment. Empowerment can be improved by working as one unit with other peoples of the group but not for the peoples of the community. Another meaning of interpersonal empowerment is to share authority within the group or community. Political empowerment is to know about...
