What is the relationship between prepares self and soldier development? The Army stands on its training and proficient leaders. Without soldier development our Army wouldn’t be as successful as we are. All across the world we influence other countries with or tactical skills, are technical skills and our professionalism. In order to be an effective Army, leader development programs must recognize, produce, and reward leaders who are inquisitive, creative, adaptable and capable of exercising mission command (FM 6-22). The Army serves to lead others, to develop the environment, themselves, others, the profession, and to achieve organizational goals (ADP 6-22). Soldier development is the essential part of the Army. Developing soldiers into future leaders requires leader development, therefore leader development is directly related to soldier development. Leader development is deliberate, continuous, sequential, and a progressive process – founded in Army values – that grows Soldiers and Army civilians into competent and confident leaders capable of decisive action (FM 6-22). The layout of leadership development is to create opportunities for our subordinates. This layout can be driven by collective and individual leadership practices. Collectively insuring that leaders reflect the Army values, to influence subordinates, and expand knowledge. Individual leadership practices can also be reflected in the developing, coaching and mentoring of subordinate soldiers. The Army is an ever changing organization, and from within, leaders influence what type of future leaders the next generation will have. Leaders’ attributes are character, presence, and intellect. Character encompasses the Army values, empathy, warrior ethos, and discipline. The attribute of presence is leaders that have military professional bearing, fitness, confidence and resilience. Intellect is having mental agility, sound judgement, innovation, interpersonal tact and expertise. Attributes shape how an individual behaves and learns in their environment (ADP 6-22). Some attributes are formed during Basic Training at the soldier level, but it’s the leader’s responsibility to expand on those attributes once the soldiers get to their duty stations. The leadership competencies are groups of related actions that the Army expects leaders to do (ADP 6-22). The Army expects leaders to lead, develop and achieve goals in accordance with the Army’s varies missions. To lead, one must lead others, build trust, extend influence beyond the chain of command, and lead by example. To develop is to create a positive environment, prepare self, develop others, and steward the profession. To achieve the ultimate goal of accomplishing the mission leaders must get results. Soldiers are not expected to have all competences and attributes as junior soldiers, but the influence of Non-Commissioned Officers will develop the soldiers to be aligned with the leadership requirements.
