Together We Stand Letter Outline I. Introduction II. Strategies applied to help foster critical thinking and lead to root cause of the illnesses A. Hold a town or community meeting addressing the issues at hand 1. Allow open forum style discussion with everyone able to submit their own opinions 2. Control the discussion with topic questions B. Send out surveys through the mail and request family to collaborate together 1. Ask questions such as doctors’ visits and common illnesses with the families 2. What is the current overall health of all of the family members within the home 3. Ask what year the home was built in for possible lead or asbestos exposure.
III. Investigation of the problem A. Confirm the information 1. Make absolutely sure there is something specifically similar the neighbors affected a. Interview, if possible, the affected neighbors to ascertain their general daily habits. b. Interview healthy neighbors not affected ascertain their daily habits c. Interview the residents about their symptoms and compare them to see if their symptoms are similar. d. Compare data from interviews for similarities in hopes to pinpoint a cause. 2. Keep a map of the area and place red pins where there are neighbors affected. B. Utilizing professional resources to confirm the problem 1. Consult multiple professional physicians for opinions regarding the cause of the illness. 2. Have the community’s water tested at the source a. Consult county or city records to see if the water supply pipes pass near the assumed “problem companies” property. 3. Inform the Environmental Protection Agency take notice of the problem. a. Request the agency impose an audit of the companies waste output over a period of one month. C. Compile a portfolio of the case 1. Summarize substantive relative findings from interviews. 2. Provide a visual of the affected area to help localize the source and hopefully find the problem 3. Collect numerous physicians’ opinions in writing, on stationary with a company letterhead. 4. Summarize the testing results from the water samples. 5. Overlay the schematic map from the county or city municipal water supply with our affected area map. 6. Obtain any reports from the EPA pertaining to the case. III. Assumptions to be aware of to ensure there was no interference with critical analysis A. The community may not be as enthusiastic to unite about this problem 1. Without the proper evidence, the community will not support justice for a fight
2. It’s imperative that research be shown to increase the communities concern B. Other possible causes for the illnesses 1. The first initial company may not be responsible for the illness, another problem may be to blame 2. The company, if it is to blame may not be willing to agree and more appropriate action may need to be taken IV. Fallacies encountered during research of possible causes for the illness A. Chemical-disposal practices have changed since development of the community, which would impact the outcome of today’s chemical levels and laws 1. At the time of construction the practices in place might have been in compliance with current regulations. 2. Strict environmental laws now eclipse what was previously required and enforced 3. Also a lot of homes built before 1978 have high levels of lead in them and should be checked by health authorities. 3. Buildings built or refurbished between 1950 and 1980 could have high levels of asbestos which could also make the community sick and cause cancer. B. If the developer’s unsafe chemical-disposal practices were to blame, then the entire community would have developed extensive and similar diseases. 1. Not all members of the community would have the same level of tolerance to the chemicals 2. The level of exposure would not be consistent throughout the community V. Conclusion
