Narration: Today is April 13th and it is the date when Songkran festival starts in my home country Thailand. Songkran festival is held to celebrate traditional Thai New Year’s Day and it is known as the biggest, longest and most important event of the year in my country. The main point of this festival is to bring unity in family and community, making merit, and sharing religious rituals which will bring fortune throughout the year.

Slide 2
Image Description: A picture of making merits by offering food and giving alms to monks.
Narration: First thing to do during the festival, my family decided to visit Wat, which is the sacred temple, to make merits. Making merit to visit the temple is an important part of Songkran because in Thailand, as well as my family, nearly 95% of them are Theravada Buddhists. It is believed that Buddhism is first introduced during the reign of Ashoka who is a famous Indian King when he sent missionaries far in Asia. When my family arrived in the temple, we first sat silent listening to Dhamma talk and observing the precepts. When we are done with it, in part of making merits, we offered foods and alms to the monks.

Slide 3
Image Description: A picture of Buddhism religious ritual by pouring fragrant water to Buddha statue.
Narration: In the afternoon, we approached to one of the Buddha image in the temple to perform the bathing ceremony. This religious ritual is essential part in Songkran. The way of participating in this ceremony is to pour the fragrant water to the Buddha statue but this religious ritual has real meaning behind. The meaning pouring water is to wash off all the bad lucks in the past year and wishing for the good luck in the New Year to have a fresh start. I poured the water to the Buddha statue as well and wished all the best in the New Year for my family. Another part of bathing ceremony is to get blessings from elders. As humility, younger people pour the fragrant water to elder’s hand and ask for their blessings. I performed the ceremony with my grandparents and my parents and they prayed for me to have a successful year.

Slide 4
Image Description: A picture of one of the famous traditional Thailand cuisine called ‘Pad Thai’.
Narration: After all the ceremonies, my family came back home to eat dinner together. My country has our own special cuisine but it is influenced by neighboring countries such as China and India. Since many Thai people are migrated from southern China to mainland, Thai cuisines have Chinese traditional food such as noodles and dumplings. Moreover, India’s spicy seasonings such as cumin and coriander, as well as curry dishes are widely used. Tonight, my family decided to eat Poa Pee, which is Thai Egg Rolls that is traditionally eaten for Songkran, and Pad Thai, which is a noodle cuisine that is one of the famous traditional Thai foods. We chose to eat noodle because as Chinese believe, we also believe that long noodles symbolize the long life, bring fortune and wealth to the person who eat them.

Image Description: A picture of people enjoying water festival in Khao San Road, Bangkok.
Narration: After having delicious dinner with my family, we sat to talk about tomorrow’s plan for Songkran and we finally decided to visit Khao San Road in Bangkok. During Songkran in Khao San Road, massive crowd of tourists and Thais are into the water fight. People in the water festival carry anything that can spray water to each other. Massive sound system is also there with DJs and mostly young crowd are participating. On the side of the road, there are many stores that sell foods and drinks which make the festival perfect. Although it is a water festival, if you are wearing skimpy costumes, you will be caught by female officers marching down the street advising what to wear to join the Songkran festival. I can’t wait for tomorrow’s water fight and I better get to sleep now for tomorrow.

...old man, an ill man, a corpse and an ascetic, Gautama was convinced that suffering lay at the end of all existence. He renounced his princely title and became a monk, depriving himself of worldly possessions in the hope of comprehending the truth of the world around him. The culmination of his search came while meditating beneath a tree, where he finally understood how to be free from suffering, and ultimately, to achieve salvation. Following this epiphany, Gautama was known as the Buddha, meaning the "Enlightened One." The Buddha spent the remainder of his life journeying about India, teaching others what he had come to understand. Everything that the Buddha taught was based on his own observation.[pic] There are quite a few Buddhists festivals. The two that I will talk about are “The Buddhist New...

...History of Thailand From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia | | | | | | | | | | Thai people who originally lived in southwestern China migrated into mainland Southeast Asia over a period of many centuries. The oldest known mention of their existence in the region by the exonym Siamese is in a 12th-century A.D. inscription at the Khmer temple complex of Angkor Wat in Cambodia, which refers to syam, or "dark brown", people.[1] It was believed that Siam derived from the Sanskrit word syam, or "brown race", with a contemptuous signification. Sien in Chinese writings is the name for the northern kingdom that centered around Sukhothai and Sawankalok; but to the Siamese themselves, the name of the country has always been Mueang Thai.[2] The country's designation as Siam by Westerners likely came from the Portuguese, the first Europeans to give a coherent account of the country. Portuguese chronicles noted that the king of Sukhothai had sent an expedition to Malacca at the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula in 1455. Following their conquest of Malacca in 1511, the Portuguese sent a diplomatic mission to Ayutthaya. A century later, on 15 August 1612, The Globe, an East India Company merchantman bearing a letter from King James I, arrived in "the Road of Syam".[3] "By the end of the 19th century, Siam had become so enshrined in geographical nomenclature that it was believed that by this name and no other would it continue to be known and styled."[4] Indianized...
