Another way of seeing it is to consider sports teams. In any set of categories, there will be teams that rate highly at some things and poorly at others. Chances are, the teams that lead in the standings will not show such disparity but will perform well in most categories. The lower the standard deviation of their ratings in each category, the more balanced and consistent they will tend to be. Teams with a higher standard deviation, however, will be more unpredictable. For example, a team that is consistently bad in most categories will have a low standard deviation. A team that is consistently good in most categories will also have a low standard deviation. However, a team with a high standard deviation might be the type of team that

Competitive Imbalance

...In “The Short Supply of Tall People: Competitive Imbalance and the National Basketball Association” (2005), Berri, Brook, Frick, Fenn and Vicente-Mayoral try to provide an explanation for whether a “short supply of tall people is a factor that drives the persistent level of competitive imbalance found in the NBA” (p. 1030). Through testing this hypothesis, the authors attempt to offer a broader view on competitive imbalance in sports, as the traditional literature has generally focused on “only one sport at a time and argued that the distribution of wins is a factor within the reach of league policy” (Berri et al., 2005, p. 1037). To improve the distribution of wins within the league, the institutions have imposed a number of rules, including...

...John graduated from NUS Business School with a first class honour. He is a very potential entrepreneur in his age. After graduation, John got an offer from NUS Business School to work as teaching assistant for annual salary of $250,000. On the other hand, John had some other things in mind which is he planned to take over his father’s factory and manufacture his own product - a shoe line production. There are 3 types of shoes that John wants to produce that are high heels, sport shoe and flats and the price of the shoe are $40, $35, $25 respectively. Before starting the manufacturing process, he faces two choices, whether to do market survey or not to do market survey. Market survey will cost John $100,000 but this market survey will help John to determine the demand of market better because it is based on previous year sales record. More details, the total demand obeys a normal distribution with the mean of 10,000 and standard deviation 2,000 without the market survey; and the mean of 12,000 and standard deviation 1,000 with the market survey. Productions of shoes will involve variable cost and fixed cost. Variable cost of production for a pair of shoe is $12. Fixed costs include labour, machine, electricity and rental of factory. The fixed cost for machine, electricity and...

Physical Distribution

...Standard deviation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_deviation, From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia In probability and statistics, the standard deviation of a probability distribution, random variable, or population or multiset of values is a measure of the spread of its values. It is usually denoted with the letter σ (lower case sigma). It is defined as the square root of the variance. To understand standard deviation, keep in mind that variance is the average of the squared differences between data points and the mean. Variance is tabulated in units squared. Standard deviation, being the square root of that quantity, therefore measures the spread of data about the mean, measured in the same units as the data. Said more formally, the standard deviation is the root mean square (RMS) deviation of values from their arithmetic mean. For example, in the population {4, 8}, the mean is 6 and the deviations from mean are {-2, 2}. Those deviations squared are {4, 4} the average of which (the variance) is 4. Therefore, the standard deviation is 2. In this case 100% of the values in the population are at one standard deviation of the mean. The standard deviation is the most common measure of statistical dispersion, measuring how widely spread the values in a data set are. If the data points are close to the mean, then the standard deviation is small. As well, if many data points are far from the mean, then the standard deviation is large. If all the data values are equal, then the...

Corporate Finance Chapter 9

...Characterize the historical return, risk, and risk-return relationship of the stock, bond and cash markets. Examining Table 9.2, it is clear that the stock market has earned about double the return since 1950 than bonds. Bonds have earned about 50% higher return than the cash markets. The risk in the stock market is also higher than the bond and cash markets according to the standard deviation measurement (Table 9.4). Another illustration of the high risk is that the stock market frequently losses money and sometimes does not earn more than the bond and cash markets over short periods of time (Table 9.2). The risk-return relationship tells us that we should expect higher returns for the riskier market. We do see higher realized returns over the long term to the higher risk asset classes. LG3 3. How do we define risk in this chapter and how do we measure it? Risk is defined as the volatility of an asset’s returns over time. Specifically, the standard deviation of returns is used to measure risk. This computation measures the deviation from the average return. The idea is to use standard deviation, a measure of volatility of past returns to proxy for how variable returns are expected to be in the future. LG3 4. What are the two components of total risk? Which component is part of the risk-return relationship? Why? Total risk includes firm specific risk and market risk....

...471 5495 Email: hsu.anne@gmail.com Peer reviewed Do corporations who invest in sponsorship perform better? Examining five years of sponsorship spending data and business performance indicators of more than 50 US-based corporations, this case study analyses the relationship between a company’s investment in sponsorship and its business performance. The results indicate that as a group corporations that consistently invested in sponsorship outperformed market averages and those who spent at an above average level outperformed those who spent at a below average level. Executive summary In 2009, North American-based companies spent a total of US$16.51 billion on sponsorship, 68% of which (US$11.28 billion) was spent with sports properties such as the US Olympic Committee, the National Football League and hundreds of local teams and athletes (IEG, 2010). However, without a universally accepted measurement metric (such as Gross Rating Points for broadcast media expenditures), many corporations 352 have struggled to compare the effectiveness of sponsorship against other more traditional marketing tactics (Meenaghan, 1999). Many have studied sponsorship’s impact on business results, such as increases in sales and market share...

Fundamentals of Statistics

...QUANTITATIVE METHODS AND ANALYSIS Fundamentals of Statistics Raymond Lawson AIU Online Virtual Campus Abstract This paper will discuss the analysis of two sets of data. The mean, median, and mode will be analyzed and charted. The standard deviation will also be discussed along with the variance. A summary of the data and its results will be discussed in conclusion. Fundamentals of Statistics Statistics are used for many different things in our lives. We have used them to in order to try and figure out who is the best at a sport or what company may give us the best return on our investment. The bottom line is statistics have become a part of our everyday life. We are going to use statistics to answer some questions we have about people and how they feel about their jobs. For this analysis we are looking at two fields of data. The first is the gender and the second is the extrinsic. We have decide to examine this data to help us understand the difference in how the two genders feel about where they work and how their feelings rate differently. Let’s first take a look at the gender of those surveyed. The mean of those surveyed by gender is mostly female. We will also look at the mean of the extrinsic job satisfaction. The scale goes from 1 being the least satisfied to 7 as the most satisfied. The mean shows that on average both genders are satisfied fairly equal to each other. Here are the charts. This shows a mean of 1.56667 which means that there were more females...

Oberymer

...Introduction Sport Obermeyer, Ltd is an American sportswear manufacturer based in Aspen, Colorado. Founded by a creative German emigrant, it is a successful provider of various skiing apparels for all ages. Being successful for over 40 years, Obermeyer had thorough experience in providing high quality clothing in the middle-higher price range. In order to keep its competitive strengths, outsourcing to the Far East started around the early nineties to lower production costs. The product portfolio was differentiated into several self-made customer categories, keeping excellent price/value ratio and functionality well in focus. As competition kept rising rapidly, Obermeyer put even more emphasis on its costing strategy, which on the other hand brought tradeoffs. Production in Hong Kong and recently also in China required significant minimum orders, which at the end of the season could have resulted in excess, unsold products. On the other hand, underestimating demand was similarly painful: not being able to fulfill customer requests resulted in lost profits. All of Obermeyer’s production were coordinated by Obersport Ltd, a joint venture between Obermeyer and his Chinese business partner. This company organized subcontractors from mainland China and Hong Kong to produce Obermeyer clothing. Recently, a new plant was built in China to utilize its significantly lower production costs compared to Hong Kong. The tradeoff, however was that minimum order quantities were higher in China...

...Introduction Sport Obermeyer is a leader in fashion skiwear manufacturing. Skiwear manufacturing is a competitive field with distinct challenges. Skiwear market is just four months long but the design and production process takes over 16 months to complete. Accurate estimates of demand become available only after a year into design and production cycle. The Company also faces long lead times from textile and accessories suppliers. This forces the company to accurately predict the demand early accurately and place the production orders that meet the forecasted demand. This case discusses the challenges faced by Wally Obermeyer in committing to specific productions quantities Sport Obermeyer will offer in 1993-1994 ski season. Wally has collected the demand forecast of each style from the members of the buying committee. Wally’s challenge is to make appropriate production commitments for the coming year based on this demand forecast. Accurate forecasts of expected demand will help the company handle the high variability in customer demand and long lead times in getting the products to the market. Increases in competition and product variety have made accurate demand prediction very difficult. The Greater product variety and more intense competition have made accurate prediction very difficult. A second challenge for Wally is to decide how to allocate production between factories in Hong Kong and China. Obermeyer Operational Challenges and Competitive Priorities 1. Product related...
