In “The Short Supply of Tall People: Competitive Imbalance and the National Basketball Association” (2005), Berri, Brook, Frick, Fenn and Vicente-Mayoral try to provide an explanation for whether a “short supply of tall people is a factor that drives the persistent level of competitive imbalance found in the NBA” (p. 1030). Through testing this hypothesis, the authors attempt to offer a broader view on competitive imbalance in sports, as the traditional literature has generally focused on “only one sport at a time and argued that the distribution of wins is a factor within the reach of league policy” (Berri et al., 2005, p. 1037). To improve the distribution of wins within the league, the institutions have imposed a number of rules, including …show more content…
First, the authors begin with an assessment of “competitive imbalance across a variety of professional team sports” (Berri et al., 2005, p. 1030). Then the authors examine the reasons causing the competitive imbalance according to the statistics derived from the Major League Baseball. After that, they discuss if the supply of population with distinctive characteristic, specifically, “the height requirement in the NBA” (Berri et al., 2005, p. 1034), will have an impact on the variability in performance and hence the competitive …show more content…
1034) even with expanding populations. They base their reasons on the fact that “there is no amount of training, though, that can make a person taller” (Berri et al., 2005, p. 1034). As a result, the height limitation in the NBA reduces the supply of labour and therefore the competitive imbalance will not be improved. Using “points scored” (Berri et al., 2005, p. 1035) that are closely tied to “player salaries” (p. 1035), as well as “a player’s overall productivity on a per minute basis” (p. 1035), the authors aim to determine if there is a relationship between the player performance and the height of the player. The results demonstrate that “there is a short supply of quality tall players” (Berri et al., 2005, p. 1036). However, the answers are incomplete in a way since it assumes height requirement is the only factor that reduces the size of the player population and that the competitive balance will not be altered by the league rules and regulations. The shortcomings in the answers are that they have not considered other factors that can contribute to reduction in population size and the competitive

Holmes County Fair Research Paper

...MILLERSBURG — “The Holmes County Fair never has to worry about another flood again.” So proclaimed Holmes County Fair Board President Kerry Taylor at Monday evening's opening ceremony for the Holmes County Fair at Harvest Ridge. Taylor was welcomed to the stage by event host Mark Lonsinger, who brought the standing-room-only crowd to its feet. In the 12 years it has taken for the dream to come to life, Lonsinger said, Taylor “has worked tirelessly, day and night, to bring us to where were are today,” overcoming every obstacle and rallying those around him to make possible the climb to the top of a mountain. Taylor, he said, is the one person who could tell the whole story of the fair and “what it took to get there.” He is the “personification of the dream.” It's a dream, Taylor said that dates back to 2004, when a flash flood ravaged the old grounds eight weeks prior to the start of the fair. It was then discussions began to move toward a solution to eliminate the issues … although there were a couple more floods to endure in the years to come. And, recalling a moving closing ceremony held 360 days ago, Taylor said, he was overwhelmed by the nostalgic stories and memories of the fair, but the excitement of all at the prospect of making new memories at the new fair. But, it's not the grounds that make the fair. Like a church, Taylor said, it's the people who make the fair. And, “all of those new memories are starting today.” He credited the community for making the effort possible...

Chemical Imbalance

...Chemical Imbalance. It was a warm sunny summer day. James walked smiling down the street but slightly nervous as he was running a little late for an encounter with his blind date Rose, which he had looked forward to with anticipation. He had been set up by his good friends to go on a blind date. They thought it was about time, that he came back on the market after the breakup with his girlfriend, which he had been in a long-term relationship with. He wanted to look as good as possible, of course, as he wanted to make a good impression on his blind date, who he had been told was a very beautiful woman. Therefore, he was wearing his favorite light yellow short-sleeved button up shirt tucked down his shorts and sneakers. He had also shaved himself and put on his Old Spice aftershave like his father always had used. They had decided to meet at a small contemporary café downtown over lunch. When he came inside, he spotted her instantly at the table near the window. Her beautiful features enlightened the whole room, and it was hard not to overlook them. They instantly caught each other’s eyes and she waved him over. The first thing she thought when she saw him was “Oh my God, what am I doing on a blind date with this guy. He is not at all what I expected.” After a few thoughts, she decided that she would give him a chance, as there might would be more to him than she could tell by the first glance and she had promised her friends to give him a chance no matter what. He was...

The Sport of Dancing

...The Sport of Dancing Courtney Packwood ENG-106/Professor Zafonte March 17, 2013 Dancers should be considered athletes as well as artists. Dancers must use their bodies to express emotions, tell a story, commit to years of physical training, develop stamina, work as a team, take care of their bodies, stretch to prevent injuries, and enter into competitions against other dancers. They deserve to be helped at the athletic office. The dance education majors are not even allowed to ask for an ice pack from the athletic trainers. Members of the Grand Canyon University Dance Team are considered athletes, while the Dance Education majors are not. Both programs involve dance training but yet the school team is the only one of the two that reaps the benefits of being an athlete. The label of dancing being an art or sport has been questioned for decades now but no one has given it a definitive answer. When looking up the definition for athlete, several interpretations are given; overall, the main idea of an athlete being, “a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina” according to the Webster dictionary. When comparing this definition to dancers, it is clear that they meet each of those standards. So, why are dancers being denied help from the athletic training office when they demonstrate comparable abilities in physical training, competition, teamwork, and dedication; just as much as any of the athletic teams on...

...Evaluate a Business Intelligence initiative that has been undertaken within your organization or one potential application of Business Intelligence within your organization? I work in the cruise industry. I never really knew how much Business Intelligence was a science. Granted, I knew we have analysts and copious amounts of data, but I never truly gave it much thought. After studying BI, I have come to realize BI is an essential aspect of my organization’s success. From measuring productivity of different departments (such as revenue, event planning, individual & groups reservations, cruising power, our company website, shipboard management, etc…) to understanding travel partner and guests needs and staying ahead of the competition, we wouldn’t survive without BI metrics and applications. Because I work in the event planning division of my company, I am not familiar with the names or metrics used to evaluate important data, but I do know from experience and part of my job function, reports and data gathered are used to make judgments and decisions about new products and constant improvements for existing services we currently provide. Surveys are completed by our travel partners and guests, and even employees. We compile reports and present them to management electronically. Our research, experience, and use of different applications, along with our IT departments, helps management and executives determine which direction to move forward. Feedback from our travel...

...Competitive Landscape When it comes to this type of argument it is very compelling to understand what needs to be done here. It is very important for a company to be able to understand what their competitive landscape market is and how they are going to use it. Within the Jackson Hewitt Company, they have many different competitors that offer similar to the same type of services they do. So the question here really is how Jackson Hewitt markets themselves and the new service of financial services that makes them more appealing to the customer. Marketing is the key, the whole purpose of why a company has marketing teams. Here are some examples of Jackson Hewitt’s competitive landscape. So let’s start out with the most obvious question, what is competitive landscape. “A competitive landscape (also known as “competitive intelligence”) provides cohesive, detailed information on what your competitors are doing including” (Koch, 2009). So when doing the research on Jackson Hewitt, I had come to a conclusion that they do not offer financial advisory to their customer such as some of their competitors do like H and R Block. So when a company wants to start up a new service, they need to research their competitor s to find out exactly what they are offering and the pricing of those services. A company needs to offer more for less in order to be competitive in a field that is already crowded. “In gathering competitive intelligence and creating your competitive landscape, you will...

The constraints often derive from a complex combination of business, regulatory and institutional issues, and result in certain kinds of “standard” trading strategies or criteria that invite algorithmic analysis. Dances

...TYPES OF DANCE: 1. Ballet * A type of performance dance that originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century and later developed into a concert dance form in France and Russia. It has since become a widespread, highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary based on French terminology. It has been globally influential and has defined the foundational techniques used in many other dance genres. Ballet may also refer to a ballet dance work, which consists of the choreography and music for a ballet production. A well-known example of this is The Nutcracker, a two-act ballet that was originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov with a music score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. * Ballets are usually theatrical and use elaborate costumes and staging. There are exceptions however, mostly by Balanchine. Ballet is also closely related to opera with many ballet companies stationed in opera houses and many operas, especially French and early Italian operas, containing ballet scenes. There is even a genre called opera-ballet that uses both singers and dancers in the main roles. * Stylistic variations have emerged and evolved since the Italian Renaissance. Early variations are primarily associated with geographic origin. Examples of this are Russian ballet, French ballet, and Italian ballet. Later variations include contemporary ballet and neoclassical ballet. Perhaps the most widely known and performed ballet style is late Romantic ballet (or Ballet...

Analyziing Your Competition-a Ghanian Case

...Analyzing Your Competition Overview Almost everyone in business understands the principle of trying to offer something better than what their competitors are offering. Gaining an advantage is the key to success and even survival. But many of the so-called advantages that businesses rely on are not sustainable. They can be easily copied, stolen or negated. Real competitive advantages — things like brand name recognition, patented manufacturing processes or exclusive rights to a scarce resource — cannot be easily copied. Every company has a unique set of strengths, and it's critical that you determine yours, as well as your competitors'. Hold a brainstorming session with your staff and advisors to perform a formal SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis. This analysis helps you to see how your strengths stack up against your competitors' weaknesses and suggests ways to take  advantage of marketplace opportunities. After you have performed the analysis, there are four basic competitive strategies to consider. 1. Become the low-cost supplier. By under-pricing the competition, you can achieve greater volume, which can drive your costs down even further by realizing economies of scale. Of course, it's important to still maintain a healthy profit margin so the key here is to lower costs, not just prices. 2. Achieve product or service quality differentiation. Think about the hundreds of companies that have achieved such differentiation for themselves...
