Helping Hands Child Care

Assignment #2
Feasibility Study

Executive Summary
Statistics Canada released figures that named Saskatoon as the fastest growing metropolitan area in Canada along with having the youngest median age.
Finding quality care for your child during those vital, formative years is one of the biggest challenges you'll face as a parent. 90% of a child's brain develops before kindergarten. It's important to find a care giver who provides the loving, fun, interactive care their precious child's brain needs.
Helping Hands Child Care has been formed to provide quality licensed daycare to families in Saskatoon, providing a safe and healthy environment for children ages 6 weeks to 12 years old to learn and grow.
The small atmosphere of Helping Hands Child Care will provide a home-like, stable setting, which is crucial to children at this stage in their life. Caring for fewer children allows for more one on one attention than is typically possible in a center-based childcare facility.
In Saskatchewan, only not-for-profit centres are eligible for public funding of any kind. There are usually no (or very few) for-profit centres.
There is a large market for licensed home day cares, as there is a centre-based space available for only 10.5% of children aged 0-5 years and only a regulated space for only 7.2% of children aged 0-12 years in Saskatchewan.
Canadian women are on a slippery slope. Although the majority of women with children are in the paid labour force in Canada (about 75% of mothers of three year olds), access to child care is limited and more-or-less static. There are child care spaces to cover less than 20% of 0-12 year olds and for families with infants, toddlers, children with disabilities, in rural and Aboriginal communities, it is even less available.
At the current slow rate of growth, it will take more than 50 years to grow the

Marketing Variables

...chosen a Child Day Care Center as my service of choice. Marketing Variables There is a large consumer base for the day care industry. More than 20% of the children in the United States live in single parent households. (Smallbusinessnotes.com, 2009) In the last decade, more young mothers have a desire to work outside of the home. With this in mind, I feel that a day care center will be an excellent business venture. Pretty much everywhere you go; there is a need for this type of business. Research has proven that the most important years in a child’s development are the ages of one to six. (Smallbusinessnotes.com, 2009) The habits that children form during this critical time period will affect their ability to learn and adjust as they grow older. Parents of today are demanding pre-school education for their children that is offered by modern day care centers. Product A children’s day care center provides supervision and recreation for children of pre-school age. Day care centers are usually operated during daytime hours while the parents are at work. A good day care center will act as much more than just a babysitting service. They will provide education, recreational activities, and hot meals. Because the economy is constantly changing, I must always consider the wants and needs of consumers when developing my business. (Ebert & Griffin, 2009) This is one of the reasons why I plan on offering additional services in my day care business...

Women in the Workplace

...necessity in the workplace, women. More and more companies are starting to put women in the higher levels of management due in part to the knowledge and skill women have. Women are just as qualified as men in many aspects of today’s society. However, this is not easy since there is still an overwhelming sense of gender bias in today’s workplace. Many corporations feel as if women are not as good as white men. Men hold 96% of all top executive jobs in America today. There have been several turning points in Americas’ history for women and it has helped women start to work their way up the corporate totem pole. Deutsche Telecom has made it a point to have at least 30% of the places in executive development programs held by women. They are also starting to have the company revolve around the work environment and work-family issues. They are currently looking into expanding family leave and giving manager more flexible hours. Deutsche Telecom is also looking to expand the number of places in company child-care programs. With Deutsche having a 30% quota it appears to me they are trying too hard to move away from the gender bias. Women should not have to worry about fitting a quota. The quota can be seen as disturbing to women; however, on the other hand it shows that women can hold higher ranked positions within their company that they may not be able to hold in other companies. Also with the expanded child-care they can feel they have a place they can work in and not feel...

Social Entrepreneur

...The Cliff between Business and Social Entrepreneurs Social entrepreneurship is an increasing trend today. On the one hand social entrepreneurs are focusing on financial returns and on the other hand, they are trying to solve social problems or provide social benefits. As the Austrian economist and father of modern entrepreneurship theory Joseph A. Schumpeter indicated, “entrepreneurs are heroic figures uniquely possessing the will to introduce revolutionary ‘new combinations’ that attack the very foundations of existing firms and destroy the prevailing equilibrium;”(Chiles et al 2007, p. 470) this is well acquainted in the society as the “creative destruction”. Social entrepreneurship is using business methods to solve social problems, which creates new business opportunity for the society. However, the financial return from successful social entrepreneurs cannot be compared to prosperous business entrepreneurs due to their different objectives. Analyzing the differences between business entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs can provide the society the tool to promote social entrepreneurs in order to tackle social problems efficiently. There are three distinguishing core elements between business and social Entrepreneurs: personality, strategy and the intrinsic motivation to start-up a new venture. One of the main differences between business entrepreneurs and social entrepreneurs lays in their personality. According to Bornstein (2004) social entrepreneurs do not need high...
