Artificial Embryo Twinning Artificial embryo twinning is a relatively low-tech way to make clones. As the name suggests, this technique mimics the natural process that creates identical twins. In nature, twins form very early in development when the embryo splits in two. Twinning happens in the first days after egg and sperm join, while the embryo is made of just a small number of unspecialized cells. Each half of the embryo continues dividing on its own, ultimately developing into separate, complete individuals. Since they developed from the same fertilized egg, the resulting individuals are genetically identical. Artificial embryo twinning uses the same approach, but it is carried out in a Petri dish instead of inside the mother. Camels have many adaptations that allow them to live successfully in desert conditions. Deserts are hot and dry. Winds blow sand all around, so a camel has long eyelashes. It has nostrils that can open and close. Why do camels have long eyelashes? The long eyelashes keep sand out of the camel's eyes. Thick eyebrows shield the eyes from the desert sun. Why does a camel have nostrils which can close? A camels nostrils can close so it doesn't get sand up its nose. Other Adaptations: 1. A camel can go a week or more without water, and they can last for several months without food. They can drink up to 32 gallons (46 litres) of water at one drinking session! 2. Camels store fat in the hump, not water. The fat can be metabolised for energy. 3. Unlike most mammals, a healthy camel's body temperature fluctuates (changes) throughout the day from 34°C to 41.7°C (93°F-107°F.) This allows the camel to conserve water by not sweating as the environmental temperature rises. 4. Camels feet are wide so they can walk on sand more easily. Their huge feet help them to walk on sand without sinking into it. 5. Camels have thick lips so they can eat the prickly desert plants with out feeling pain. 6. GMOs are also a fact of public preoccupation and opinion, which politicians must takeinto account. FAO recognizes the great potential and the complications of these new technologies. We need to move carefully, with a full understanding of all the factors involved.In particular, we need to assess GMOs is terms of their impact on food security, poverty,biosafety, and the sustainability of agriculture. Will GMOs increase the amount of food in theworld, and make more food accessible to the hungry? Clearly, GMOs should be seen not inisolation as technical achievements. Hence, I will discuss not the specifics of GMOtechnology, but the context in which they are developed and deployed, and about how public opinion and government policy on GMOs are formed. The public in many countries distrusts GMOs. They are often seen in the context of globalization and of privatization and even as “antidemocratic” or “meddling with evolution”. There are as yet few perceived advantages for the public, because GMO applications to date have concentrated on reducing costs for producers without direct consumer benefits. In particular, it has been a tactical error of the industry to concentrate on pesticide-resistance as one of the earliest applications, as this has stimulated environmental concerns.
