Steve Jobs
Steven Paul Jobs was born on February 24 1955, in San Francisco, California to Joanne Schieble and Abdulfattah "John" Jandali, two University of Wisconsin graduate students who gave their unnamed son up for adoption. Jobs was 27 when he was able to uncover information on his biological parents. The infant was then adopted by Clara and Paul jobs. Jobs was raised in mountain view, California, which later became known as a Silicon Valley. At a young age jobs worked on a lot of electronics in the garage with his father. Jobs could have been described as far sighted. Jobs was always creating new products in his head for the future. He brought these thoughts to reality and created all the products we have today. He also had so much confidence which really helped him to become a successful entrepreneur. He always believed in every one of his products, mind and creations more than anyone. If something went wrong, he would never blame the products but instead believed something can be done to turn it around and fix it. He was also a bossy person. This may not be classed as a good trait but it was for jobs as it helped him to develop the exact products that he had in mind. He was also a very passionate man with what he did. In some interviews he revealed his secret behind his perseverance. He said that passion fuels a person's journey and that if there was no passion then an ordinary person will certainly quit. One thing that jobs done was that he did not let anything step in his way. Jobs built up apple into an empire from which he got fired from but this did not stop him from sill becoming one of the most successful entrepreneurs this world has and will ever see. After joining Pixar and coming back he turned apple into one of the biggest organisations in our time and this was all due the Jobs believing in himself and what he does. (Anon 3) (Anon

Management in Action

...1. How would you evaluate Jobs in terms of the Big Five personality dimensions? Evaluating Steve Jobs in terms of the Big Five personality dimensions is a relatively simple exercise due to the fact that his personality was bigger than most. He was the personification of an extrovert, there are numerous examples in the Management in Action. However, the one that exemplifies this trait was how he handled a situation in which a beta IPhone was left by a salesman at a bar. Apple, known for its unrelenting secrecy surrounding its products under development, wanted the phone back quickly. A blogger paid to obtain the phone and wrote about the new features on its website. Jobs personally called the head of the company in possession of the phone, told the CEO he was not mad at him, and understood he was just doing his job, although, he was mad at the salesman that lost it. Jobs assured the CEO if the phone was not voluntarily returned and he had to use other means to obtain the phone, someone at the bloggers company was going to end up in jail. This was an excellent example of all the traits of an extrovert, outgoing, talkative, sociable, and assertive all on display in that situation. Jobs ability to honestly deal with people by telling people directly how he felt showed his agreeableness, indeed he felt people would rather know the facts as he saw them rather than leave things vague and have them think it was acceptable. He demanded and expected perfection and made sure people...

Steve Jobs Leadership Style

...The leadership style adopted by Steve Jobs: Steve Jobs was an unconventional leader and his management style was complex. He was an autocratic and missionary leader driven by beliefs and a vision of creating an enduring company with a motivated workforce that created great products and would be remembered by future generations. In relation to Apple, many people refer to Steve Jobs as a Visionary. Steve Jobs was a willful and driven leader and he demanded excellence from his staff and was known for his blunt delivery of criticism. He was focused and committed, confident to take risks and combined with his sheer genius, he had the charisma and an ability to successfully communicate his vision and, thus, gain the support of employees, customers and investors. His criteria for creating products and services were simplicity, functionality, and consumer appeal before profit, cost and sales volume. Also, he had an eye for detail, understood the power of cultural influence and was innovative and a perfectionist. Steve Jobs would not be described as warm and fuzzy. He wasn't known for his consultative or consensus building approach and was not a giving, caring organizational mentor. He didn’t mince his words and had a habit of distorting reality to fit his purposes which caused people to question his credibility. Steve Jobs had an abrasive personality and was not known for his interpersonal skills. He was impatient, stubborn, rude and hypercritical. Also, he had a whimsical...

Compare and Contrast the Leadership of Steve Jobs with That of Fr Jose Maria Arizmendiarrieta

...Steve Jobs and Father Jose Maria Arizmendiarrieta were both exemplary leaders. In just 35 years, Steve Jobs took Apple Computers from a mere idea to a $380 billion dollar enterprise. Father Arizmendiarrieta educated and aided the first founders of the Mondragón Cooperative that today employs more than 80 000 people. Great achievements from two man who simply cannot be defined by any one “textbook” leadership style. It appears that in real life leadership theories may be applied in synergy, allowing the flexibility for a leader to adapt their style as the situation requires. Whilst Steve Jobs and Father Arizmendiarrieta were both effective leaders, one stands out. Father Arizmendiarrieta led a population to self-sufficiency and whilst never the vast financial success of Apple, Mondragón’s continuing existence is the legacy of a truly superior leader. Five theories; trait, behaviours, power motives, charismatic and transformational leadership will be discussed in turn, each one examining the similarities and/or differences Steve Jobs and Father Arizmendiarrieta displayed and how these differences made Father Arizmendiarrieta the more outstanding leader. Trait leadership is one of the original leadership theories and has resurfaced recently with Zaccaro (2006) arguing that traits and attributes combined, can be a significant predictor of leadership ability. Personality traits can be divided into general and task related traits (Dubrin 2013, pp. 37-50). Effective leaders display...

...relationships and networks. Early leadership theories focused on the leaders and which qualities distinguished leaders and followers, the notion of Great man theory which Bass suggests (in Northouse: 15) is the notion of heroic leaders that are born not made, like Mohandas Gandhi. Leadership theories evolved from great man though trait theories, behaviourist theories, situational leadership, contingency theory and on to transactional and transformational leadership. The progression of theories highlights a shift in generic characteristics and behaviors of leaders to recognition of the importance of responding to different situations and contexts and the leaders’ role in relation to followers. (Gosling, Marturano, and Dennison. 2003:6) Great man theory developed in the mid-19th century was the bases of leadership theory from which Trait Approach arose as a way of identifying the key characteristics of successful leaders. The theory, developed between 1930s-1940s, assumes that people are born with trait which will allow them to excel in leadership positions, by identifying the necessary traits recruiters could hire competent leaders. Critics commented that personality trait...

His creations led him to begin one of the world’s most successful computer companies in the world, which would eventually create a paradigm shift in the technology world. Jobs was adopted as an infant by a middle class family and grew up in California’s Silicon Valley, where as a teenager, he was exposed to tinkering with his father in the family garage, which in 1976, became the birthplace of Apple Computer (Jobs, 2012). As an executive, Jobs had a temperament that was not always welcomed in the professional atmosphere. Shortly after he began Apple he was asked to leave by the Board of Directors and friend, John Sculley, CEO of Apple Computer. This was a blow that Jobs did not take lightly, and in order to maintain his dream and vision, he started a new software company, called NeXT. Eventually Apple Computer purchased the failing company, only after Jobs returned to Apple Computer in 1997, as the CEO. He replaced Gil Amelio, who replaced John Sculley only three years before (Nair, 2012).
