...Jimenez Melissa Sue Whitney WRC 1013.087 9 December 2010 Cruelty towards Animals and Their Rights If killing animals was entertaining to the people by abusing them and possibly causing them to fight, would you join the cruel humans that are doing this just to have fun watching animals fight and be abused? Animal cruelty comes in different ways from animal abuse, fighting the animals, and even mistreating them. Cruelty to animals is growing all over the United States even out of the US, especially dog fighting and cock fighting has grown dramatically. Animals used for other purposes are being abused more. The poor animals feel pain and suffer every time they are killed or mistreated. Even though my own father commits animal cruelty, still does not change the way I feel towards animal cruelty. My father thinks it is not bad to fight roosters, but I always tell him that fighting them is very cruel to the rooster. Two main animals used for fighting are roosters and dogs. They are trained and forced to fight each other to death, which cock fighters find interesting and gamble their money. Animal Rights and Human Obligations Second Edition, Ed. by Tom Regan and Peter singer, specifies the rights of animals, treatment of animals, killing and value of life of animals, etc. It has various authors on each specific topic that makes it more interesting. I argue that animals should be given their rights and not be...

...Dogfighting is a sadistic contest in which two dogs who are specifically bred, conditioned, and trained to fight are placed in a small pit (a small arena made out of plywood walls) to fight each other for the spectator’s entertainment and gambling. “Man’s best friend” may fight to the death in dog fights, often with tens of thousands of dollars at stake. Dogfighters sometimes kill the losing dogs, and even the winning dogs may die from their wounds. Life as a dog used for fighting is a nightmare. Dogfighting is a huge problem and it needs to stop. Sometimes as an individual you don’t think there is much you can do, but there is. Humane Society of the United States (2011) says dogs that are used as fighting dogs live chained up or are put into a tiny cage, do not get the veterinary care that they need. They die in the ring or they are unceremoniously shot for losing and some are used as “bait” for other dogs. Pit bulls and dogs that look like pit bulls get a bad rap because of their reputation as fighting dogs. Dogs that are used in dog fights often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, or infection hours or even days after a dog fight. Injuries that are inflicted and sustained by dogs participating in dog fights are frequently severe, even fatal. The American pit bull terrier-type are used in a majority of dog fights. Pit bulls have been specifically bred and are trained for fighting as puppies. With their extremely powerful jaws, they are capable of inflicting...

...Dogfighting Where does the abuse stop? A lot of animals in our society are being abused, mistreated, and neglected. Some are used for sports, others for entertainment, and some for testing purposes. Out of these animals I would like to delve into the abuse of dogs, in particular dog fights. The reality of the cruel injustice these unwilling canines go through day in and day out should not go without punishment. These are living creatures, just like we are, and they deserve kindness and respect as well. Are we doing enough in our society to see that these dogs are brought to justice? When I first learned about dogfighting, I was horrified. I couldn’t believe that people would try and make a profit over two dogs fighting to the death or until one of the dogs couldn’t continue. I learned that dogfighting is a brutal and ruthless sport in which two dogs, or even more, are trained to fight. Most of the time the canine they choose for these fights are pit bulls because of their jaw power and unwillingness to let go. Both pit bulls are placed in a small enclosed area to fight each other for the on-lookers enjoyment and gambling purposes. The Humane Society says that the dogs used in these events often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, or infection, hours or even days after the fight. Ed Faron says in his book ‘The complete gamedog: a guide to breeding & raising the american pit bull terrier’ that the injuries inflicted and sustained by dogs participating in dogfights...

...and she later gave birth to 10 puppies that we either sold or gave to friends, except for one in which we kept. While growing up and playing with Roxie we would run around the yard. She loved to play in the snow and piles of leaves. She was a very sweet dog. She would come and lay on the floor by your feet and just lay there until you moved. My sisters, brother and myself treated her more like a child then a dog. When we were eating something, we gave her some even though our parents told us not to. She loved peanut butter. She was a very good guard dog, because she would let you know when someone would be in the yard or at the door. She would bark to let you know that someone was there, but she never attacked the person. My sister’s pit bull mini is really sweet as well she loves to come and jump on my bed when I am laying their watching television and she will just lay there and go to sleep. Her dad Cash comes into the house and he just walks around and finds a spot him to lie until it is time for him to leave. Mist loves to play. I will take her outside and throw a ball or Frisbee and she will chase it and bring it back to me. When I tell her not to do something she stops doing. It’s all in the way the dog has been trained that makes them who they are. Pit...

...Michael Vick Michael Vick was born on June 26, 1980 in the city of Newport News, Virginia. Vick’s parents Michael Boddie and Caletha Vick and Vick’s siblings Christina, Courtney and Marcus grew up together in the hostile environment that Newport News was known for. Newport News is infamous for it’s gangs and drug activity. It is nicknamed “NewportNam”. This is a reference to Vietnam in order to show the hostile and dangerous environment that Vick grew up in. This would impact Vick in a negative way in his future. Vick’s journey to prison would start at a young age. Michael Vick saw his first dog fight at the age of 8. Dog fighting was a part of the culture of the neighborhood. In his biography, “Finally Free”, Vick says that “When [he] was young, [he] witnessed dogfighting so much that [he] didn’t think it was wrong” (102). Growing up in this kind of environment would lead to Vick’s imprisonment. He also states that while he knew that people got in trouble for dogfighting, he never knew that people could be arrested for it. Another factor that caused Vick’s imprisonment was the absence of his father. Vick’s father, Michael Boddie, worked at a local shipyard as a sandblaster. Boddie also struggled with an addiction to drugs and alcohol. This resulted in Vick growing up with no one to teach him right from wrong. This also resulted in no one being able to guide him through the tough times of living in Newport News. In accordance, in the book “Role Models”, the author writes that...

...Dog Eat Dog? Dog fighting has been around for hundreds of years and can be traced back to Europe. The sport of dog fighting is progressively getting more and more popular. It is illegal and considered a felony under federal laws in all fifty states in the United States of America (Dogfighting Fact Sheet 1). Besides the act of dog fighting itself being illegal, there are usually always other criminal activities involved such as: drug paraphernalia, illegal weapons, illegal gambling, and gang activities. Therefore, this so-called sport of dog fighting should continuously stay prohibited, and be more harshly punished by stricter laws. This brutal and bloody entertainment sport, where dogs fight to the death, is an inexcusable example of animal cruelty. Dog fighting is believed to have started in England after bull-baiting was outlawed. Bull-baiting was a spectator sport where a bull had a rope tied around its neck and then tied to a stake in the ground. Bulldogs were then sent to attack or “pin down” the bull by grasping the bull by its nose. Many dogs would receive life threatening wounds or would be killed by the bull trying to escape the torture of numerous dogs attacking him (Luca 1). After this very popular sport was banned people who owned these bull-baiting dogs, also known as bulldogs today, began pitting these dogs against each other. After people began participating in the sport of dog fighting, people began breeding bulldogs with terriers (Background on Dog Fighting...

...One of the most shocking and gruesome stories over the last five years has been the report of Michael Vick running a dog fighting scandal in the confines of his Virginia home. This story was covered by every single major news outlet across the United States and caused uproar amongst millions of animal lovers. While this press undoubtedly raised awareness of the perils of animal cruelty, there are still hundreds and hundreds of cases that go unnoticed every day. For how loving and caring animals are to human beings, it is about time that we stand up to those who mistreat them and give animals the support they need and deserve. There have obviously been several animal activist groups over the years such as PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) but there is still so much we can do to raise awareness of this issue and make a difference. There are varying degrees of animal cruelty, however, one no better than the other. It is important to recognize each one and the motives behind the owner’s abuse because there needs to be different ways to handle these crimes. There is blatant abuse, such as in the Michael Vick case, where owners put animals in an atmosphere that is detrimental to their health and well-being. As for Vick, he bred and trained dogs to become vicious fighters as a part of his operation called “Bad Newz Kennels” (Schorn 1). CBS Sports Anchor James Brown asked Vick in an interview what had motivated him to continue to run this operation despite...

...1915 Moonlight Road wasn’t just the house that the Atlanta Falcons football star Michael Vick lived in. It was the site of many kennels and sheds hidden behind the house that kept around 50 Pit Bulls, who were trained and bred to be fighting dogs. The initial raid on the house was conducted on April 25, 2007. The dogs were sent to many different shelters for months before they got moved to foster homes, volunteer services, or new shelters. As stated before, many dogs were trained and specifically bred to be fighting dogs. Jim Gorant wrote in the book, The Lost Dogs, “The best fighters- the most aggressive and skilled- were bred to one another to enhance those traits in further generations.” The quote above explains how the dogs were picked...

...Pit Bull. You either thought if a mean, vicious and angry dog ready to attack at the drop of a hat, or you think of a big but cute dog, who is protective and loving of owners who treat them well. Many countries and states are trying to get pit bulls banned under Breed-Specific Legislations, or BSL. In “Opinion: Pit bulls should be banned” by Barbara Kay states that pit bulls should be banned because they are natural born killers and there is no way to train them to behave. Elana Pisani author of “PIT BULL DISCRIMINATION – A PEOPLE PROBLEM?” believes that the dog fighting boom of 1980s is to blame for the pit bull’s reputation, and they are no more dangerous than any other breed of dog. Is the issue the dog itself, or the owner and the environment...

... Period 3 #19-20 Pitbulls A lot of people fear dogs, the main one they fear is a pitbull. Why? People think these dogs are “killing machines.” They just don't understand and they assume their out to attack. You may have certain opinions also on these types of dogs but you might just not understand their actions. They were originally farm dogs, used to pull stuck horses, cattle. They were used for hunting. Butchers thought it would make their meat taste better by letting a couple of dogs attack the bull (they thought it tenderized the meat). That soon became a form of entertainment, after Bull baiting was banned, thats when dog fighting began... These people would attach weights, make them over run on treadmills, swim across small ponds for hours trying to build muscle, they would give them steroids, they fed their dog gun powder, sharpen their teeth. cut their ears off... ...paper process I have made great strides in working to complete the material. I have not had to switch my topic as I am finding very interesting sources from different point of views on the subject. There is a great quantity of information on the web about Michael Vicks situation post, during, and before his dog fighting allegations and trial. With this said I have no trouble finding sources dealing with my topic. The sources are not just your average sources though. These sources go into great detail, even sharing the amount of money Vick lost, and is still losing, from his bankruptcy case in which he filed just months before being incarcerated. By reading multiple sources and seeing different point of views on the matter I can’t exactly say it changed my stance or outlook on the situation, but it did open my eyes. I’m not saying Michael Vick was right or didn’t deserve to go to jail, but he did not deserve to serve that long of a tenure in jail. That I do know. Not only have a considered looking at others viewpoints on the subject matter, but I’ve already made a great effort to do so. I like seeing what other great mind think about that subject of Michael Vick and dog fighting. The sides seem to be split on the image of Michael Vick though. There are many that feel Vick paid his debt to society and is a great example of redemption and that you can turn your life around. Every knows America is one of the few countries that is open to second chances. But with these positive outlooks...
