...STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT AND COST MANAGEMENT CONCEPTS Introduction The concepts of cost management and strategic management are the foundations for managers. The growing pressures of global competition and technological innovation have made cost management more critical and dynamic than ever before. Now cost management has moved towards a broader strategic focus than that of product costing. This so-called strategic cost management needs to facilitate strategic management in order to allow the firm to retain its competitive advantage. In order to implement this, benchmarking, value chain, balance scorecard and SWOT analysis should be undertaken. A firm should then identify its strategic positioning in the market: how it will sustain a competitive position. Furthermore, the strategic role of cost concepts will also be described in relation to product/service costing, strategic decision-making (cost driver analysis), planning/decision making and control/feedback purposes. Costs are now more complex than ever since large companies like Proctor & Gamble have a large product portfolio, and costs have become a vital element of a firm’s strategy. In order to understand these concepts fully, we will relate them to real businesses; in particular, we will analyze these concepts with relation to the McDonald’s corporation. Strategic Management Strategic management is the conduct of drafting, implementing and evaluating cross-functional decisions that will enable an organization...

...2 Value Chain Management The theoretical background is defined around the central term value chain. Chapter 2 presents research concepts to manage the value chain structured by their area of specialization either on supply, demand or values. Secondly, within an integrated framework, the results of the specialized disciplines are combined with the objective to manage sales and supply by values and volume. Value chain management is defined and positioned with respect to other authors’ definitions. A value chain management framework is established with a strategy process on the strategic level, a planning process on the tactical level and operations processes on the operational level. These management levels are detailed and interfaces between the levels are defined. Since the considered problem is a planning problem, the framework serves for structuring planning requirements as well as the model development in the following chapters. 2.1 Value Chain Value chain as a term was created by Porter (1985), pp. 33-40. A value chain “disaggregates a firm into its strategically relevant activities in order to understand the behavior of costs and the existing and potential sources of differentiation”. Porter’s value chain consists of a “set of activities that are performed to design, produce and market, deliver and support its product”. Porter distinguishes between • primary activities: inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing and sales, service in the core value...

...BUSINESS STRATEGIES Strategic management involves the formulation and implementation of the major goals and initiatives taken by a company's top management on behalf of owners, based on consideration of resources and an assessment of the internal and external environments in which the organization competes.[1] Strategic management provides overall direction to the enterprise and involves specifying the organization's objectives, developing policies and plans designed to achieve these objectives, and then allocating resources to implement the plans. Academics and practicing managers have developed numerous models and frameworks to assist in strategic decision making in the context of complex environments and competitive dynamics.[2] Strategic management is not static in nature; the models often include a feedback loop to monitor execution and inform the next round of planning.[3][4][5] Harvard Professor Michael Porter identifies three principles underlying strategy: creating a "unique and valuable [market] position", making trade-offs by choosing "what not to do", and creating "fit" by aligning company activities with one another to support the chosen strategy.[6] Dr. Vladimir Kvint defines strategy as "a system of finding, formulating, and developing a doctrine that will ensure long-term success if followed faithfully."[7] Corporate strategy involves answering a key question from a portfolio perspective: "What business should we be in?" Business strategy involves answering the...

...or service sector, the need for cutting the unnecessary costs, achieving maximum efficiency, and implementing operations management strategies is increasing (Shaikh, 2009). To serve the different needs and expectation of various customers effectively, it is necessary to implement effective operational approaches, which enable the organization to meet the standards of particular industry. There are various operational approaches for a service and manufacturing organization, which are necessary for increasing the productivity and efficiency of the organization. ...strategy concepts WHAT IS BUSINESS STRATEGY? There is no new content in Unit 6. All preceding Units have ended with a section on business strategy. In short, Unit 6 is about synthesizing the different business theories, concepts and techniques covered in this book. It is about devising a plan to achieve the long-term goals of an organization. The idea behind each section on Business Strategy is to allow students to apply the different techniques that will help to make more informed decisions. Business Strategy is explicitly assessed in Section C of Paper 1 for Higher Level students. There are three stages to business strategy: Stage 1: Strategic analysis — determining the current position of an organization. Stage 2: Strategic choices — determining where the organization is headed. Stage 3: Strategic implementation — determining how the organization should get there: The case studies in this textbook have questions directly related to business strategy; there are further examples in the IB Business and Management syllabus guide (pages 40-43). Formulating strategy Business strategy should focus on, among other issues: * Organizational aims and objectives * Stakeholder interests * Resources (human, capital and financial) * Strengths (and weaknesses) to be developed * The long term * The external business environment (e.g. state of the economy) * Customers and customer service * Quality management *...

...BUSINESS POLICY EVOLUTION OF BUSINESS POLICY Evolution of Business Policy Course by SREE RAMA RAO on NOVEMBER 2, 2010 Business policy as a distinct field of study was introduced at Harvard Business School way back in 1911. The course aimed at improving the general management capabilities of students. It was intended to tie together and give proper focus to the first year courses by showing how the functions of business both internally and as between businesses, were closely interrelated in practice and how a chief executive had to recognize and deal with those relationships. The course, however received widespread acceptance only after the publication of two reports in 1959. The Gordon and Howell report, sponsored by the Ford Foundation predicted that a course on business policy would give students an opportunity to put together what they have learned in the separate business fields and utilize this knowledge in the analysis of complex business problems! The Pierson report, sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation also recommended the introduction of the course strongly. Following these reports the business policy course was made mandatory in all business schools in the US for the purpose of recognition. In the course of time the course gained popularity in business schools in other parts of the world as well. It is being increasingly viewed as an integrative course offered to students after completing as set of functional area courses in Finance, Marketing, and Accounting...
