Strategy Essay – Week 2
This week’s essay focused on finding a company that seems to be following a ‘parallelism’ strategy and assess whether it is working for them in terms of profit and response to environment. Beinhocker describes Parallelism as having multiple experiments allows you to take risks without ‘betting the farm’. The company I researched is called Grace Manufacturing, they took a radical step in changing their industry and product but a remarkable stroke of luck opened a new market for them and they managed to move and adapt to maximise the opportunity presented to them and taken on board this strategy moving forward.
Grace started out in the 1966 as a contract manufacturer of etched steel parts, such as printers. They had developed a proprietary process for making precise steel shapes, which meant the edges of the steel being razor sharp and patented the process. However, sharpness was a liability and workers had to be careful handling the parts. With the emergence of dot matrix printers in the 1980’s, they realised their cash cow business was under threat and so looked into different areas.
Grace didn’t take the natural progression to looking at adjacent areas such as dot matrix printers or other high volume complex machine pieces. Instead they realised they were good at making things sharp, so went into woodworking tools and developed the microplane in 1985. Grace had some success with the woodwork tools but in 1995 a new product category opened up for them when they discovered chefs were using the microplanes for grating and shaving. Apparently in 1994, Canadian Lorraine Lee was frustrated with her zester and grabbed a microplane her husband bought and used it on an orange. Her husband owned Lee Valley Tools that sold the microplane, so she changed the product description in their catalogue. Chefs bought them and loved them, with this the kitchen gadget market was born. Grace tweaked the design of the microplane for kitchen use and launched the new product in 1998. Now they produce more than 40 products for the kitchen including pizza cutters, herb mills, salt shavers and graters. The success of the microplane in the culinary marketplace has been attributed to that it was not premeditated. Sales of the culinary tools, based on the original woodworking application, account for 65% of the company’s revenue. Estimates of Grace Manufacturing revenue is approximately $25 million, which indicates that they are successful. The company appear to be adopting a parallelism strategy still, as they have also moved into the medical industry using their expertise in sharp products, producing an ‘acetabular reamer’ used by surgeons to prepare hip sockets for implants and a device to grind bone into paste. Other markets they have ventured into include personal care with a microplane foot file and hole saws based on their strengths of making things sharp.
Today the company operate in the following industries: * Kitchen Products * Personal Care * Computer terminal and other computer peripheral equipment manufacturing. * All other miscellaneous general purpose machinery manufacturing. * Metal coating, engraving and allied services to manufacturers. * Saw blade and hand tool manufacturing. * Surgical and Medical instrument manufacturing.

Rhetorical Strategies: How They Enhance the Essay

...Rhetorical Strategies: How They Enhance the Essay Today, rhetorical strategies are ubiquitous. They can be discovered in the latest top box office cinematic movie, the beloved binge-watched television show on Netflix, the aggravating commercials we are forced to sit through, the latest best-selling book, etc. Applying rhetorical strategies helps the writer communicate with ease and fluidity. Rhetoric additionally helps the reader or viewer gain interest while making it pleasurable. All in all, rhetorical strategies are simply ways of effectively and adequately presenting material. In the essays of discussion the effectiveness of how imagery, emotional appeal and tone build the writers credibility and enhance the essay will be discovered. For example, Virginia Woolf uses rhetorical strategies in “The Death of The Moth”. Woolf begins by using imagery effectively throughout her essay by strategically incorporating descriptive details. Woolf encountered this moth in the day time, so she begins her essay by stating, “moths that fly by day are not properly to be called moths . . .” (para. 1). This statement spikes wonder; what does that mean? She explains that moths in the day “ . . . do not excite that pleasant sense of dark autumn nights and ivy-blossom which the commonest yellow-underwing asleep in the shadow of the curtain never fails to rouse in us” (Woolf para. 1). Her sense of imagery is full of color and expression which helps her credibility in her writing. It truly makes...

Business Strategy Game Final Essay

...1.In the business strategy game one should buy plant upgrades early in the game, because it has an accumulative effect. In the "Plant Capacity" screen you are given four different plant upgrade options per plant. Depending on what your strategy is, one should upgrade their plant in each region with at least two different options. 2. In the "Branded Production" screen you will want to make TQM/sigma six have a value of 2.50 because it helps you achieve a higher SQ rating and set Best Practices at 5000 because it will save you money per pair of shoes produced. Keep these values the same from the start of the game and until the end because they also have an accumulative effect. The business strategy game values more models offered than SQ rating. 3. On should treat the business strategy game like a real corporation and take out loans early on in the game because you have a better credit score starting out. Borrow the maximum amount for the first few years. Use the money from the loans to build more plant capacity in existing plants as well as possibly a new plant in another geographic region such as Latin America. Once your company starts making more and more revenue every year, you can repay your loans early, buy back stock, and pay dividends. 4. After the business strategy game is run, buy excess capacity that all of the other teams sell. The number of excess capacity will be shown on the "Corporate Lobby" screen, and to buy it you just go to the "Plant Capacity" screen...

Summary Of Vliet's Argument

...My essay provides a clear and thorough refutation of Vliet’s arguments that follow the specific “defend the status quo” refutation strategy. Throughout my argument I used specific strategies that helped defend the current policy. I believe that my essay clearly refutes Vliet’s argument by providing counter examples from reliable sources to help counter her claims. Another strategy that I used in my essay was the identification of logical fallacies that Vliet stated in her argument. While searching for sources I searched for credible sources that provided reliable facts and evidence. I tried to locate sources that were void of any biases. Also, I did a thorough job explaining why the current policy needs to stay as is and not be changed, due...

Self Assessment Essay

...Self Reflective Essay Derek Alan Barbara ENG115Self-Assessment Reflection Derek Alan Barbara For the informative essay, I chose to do a web style prewriting strategy which was mainly effective at getting my ideas out while organizing them at the same time. I learned from this strategy that I can organize and have plenty of ideas come at the same time. The Purpose of my essay was to inform the reader on how to take a shower. From the getting ready part, through the actual shower and on to the after shower activities. I looked for content and organization in the essays read in class. I learned that other authors had really interesting stands on a variety of subjects. I learned that I needed to spend more time organizing and structuring my paper towards the end. I decided to revise my essay by proofreading it myself and making corrections throughout. I took time apart from the essay in order to gather my thoughts and be able to look at it with fresh eyes. This method was especially helpful because it allowed me to organize the way I wanted and decide what should be taken out and left in. I believe the strongest part of my essay was the amount of detail I used in describing how to prepare, take and things to do after utilizing a shower. I ran into some problems with getting off topic but I tried to cope with it by reminding myself of the main point and taking small breaks in between writing. This proved to be very useful and allowed me to stay on topic and organize...

Essay Writing Step by Step

...ESSAY WRITING STEP BY STEP “Write an essay? But I don’t know how!” If you are unnerved by the thought of writing a college essay, remember that this task can be accomplished in the same way as any other—one step at a time. An effective essay is the result of careful thinking, planning, writing, and revising. If you work hard on the first two steps, the last two will be much easier. Your goal is to produce an essay whose content is focused, well-developed, and clear. THINKING (Many decisions must be made before you actually write anything down.) 1. Consider purpose: The general purpose of your essay will usually be determined by your instructor. To be sure you know the specific purpose of your particular essay, complete this sentence: “The purpose of my essay is to ….” Example: General Purpose: Describe in detail an important characteristic of a person you know well. Specific purpose: The purpose of my essay is to describe my mother’s kindness toward her family, friends, and co-workers. 2. Consider audience: The identity of your audience will determine how much background information will be necessary and what terms need to be used or defined. For example, an essay written for nurses on care of the elderly will include less background and more technical information than an essay written for the general public on the same topic. Unless directed otherwise, you should write for an uninformed audience. Even if your...

Creative Thinking

...I will use all the strategies. Reason I want to use all the strategies is because I want to add more life to the article and get the viewers to fully read through my article. One of the strategies is taken a Novel Approach; I believe that if I take a novel approach in the article then I will have my readers reading the article as a story so they can get more in depth with the article. Another strategy is Devising or Modifying a Processor System, with this I will make sure that I have a plan so I will not be free writing through the entire article. I will also use Finding New Uses for Existing Things because the stories in the article may involve old stories but adding new stories will brighten the article more. Lastly, Inventing or Redefining a Concept so that my article looks the part and looks new and improved. I will use these strategies in ways that I can keep my readers curious on how the article goes and I want to keep the readers guessing but I do not want to leave them guessing I want to give the answers to them in a bang so the ending will not be boring. I want the readers to read with curiosity and to keep them on their toes with guessing but I also want to provide them answers in a way that readers are shocked; to keep them (the readers) guessing and curious until the very end and have a jaw dropping conclusion. Well in a persuasive essay you are trying to sway someone to think a certain way based upon facts but it is bias because they are trying to get you to...

In my first essay I didn't use MLA because i had never used it before. English 99 Reflection

...For English 99 course I did accomplish my goal to be better writer. I argue that I can do a lot better in this class because I didn't follow good rules of writing and use time wisely on my essay. Many classes require one or more writing assignments, from short responses to term papers, and I'll do better on these assignments. I didn't do well on my first essay and third essay. On my first essay, there's Salome fragments and grammar error. I didn't anyone to proofread. And on my third essay, I thought that I can nail this essay, but I was wrong. I needed help. I was too stubborn. Also, my third essay I didn't organize my thoughts before writing. I didn't map out an outline before I start the actual writing. At the end, I didn't submit my essay on time. I had difficulty picking essay topics, locating appropriate resources, holding and manipulating information in their memory, organizing and sequencing the material, and getting it down on paper — all before I forget what I wanted to say. Always back up what you write with textual evidence – that is, give examples from the book or play that support your views. Don’t just write that you believe something – give proof! If I told to list important ideas and themes in the text, write examples of events of circumstances that drive you to your conclusion....
