1 Terms of Reference 1.1 Background

I am John McGlone and I am writing a report on stress in the workplace for my Office Admin class at Coatbridge College, the reason for this report is to find the effects of stress in the workplace and try find ways in which it could be prevented. It is to be submitted as an assessment to the lecturer of my Office Admin class and it is to be graded. 1.2 Aim

The aim of my report is to hand in an article which effectively and understandably describes the results of stress in the workplace, telling how it effects the work and the overall mind-set. The whole purpose is basically to inform people of how stress effects people in the workplace. 1.3 Objectives

The objectives is to research and find information on work related stress from different sources and gather facts on the causes and effects of stress and then try to find ways in which the stress can be prevented in the workplace.

1.4 Limitations/Scope

I found it difficult to complete the task as I felt I did not have enough time, I also found it hard to research as I didn’t really know what to specifically research.

2 Procedure

In order to gain information through research I used many different methods such as interviews, internet research, library and I also got information from other reports.

3 Findings
In the work place there are many different factors which can cause problems of stress to an employee. One of the findings that I have discovered when searching on the internet is the symptoms of work related stress. The work related stress can have many effects not only on our work but also on our health. According to the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) between the years 2011/12 428,000 people in the UK alone had suffered from work related stress to the extent that it was making them sick. In this report I will be referring to a k study, “Hotel and Conference company”.
Richard S Lazarus gives the most common definition of stress, “stress is a condition or feeling experienced when a person perceives that demands exceed the personal and social resources the individual is able to mobilize” This description covers stress as a whole as it is basically saying that people become stressed when it all gets too much. It also is tell in us that people need resources to help them do well in the workplace.
3.1 Causes of Work Related Stress
One of the causes of stress in the workplace is lack of training and it is when an employee has an issue with the work as the requirements as it does not match their ability. This can lead to the employee getting stressed as it means that they become overloaded with work that they do not know how to complete and they begin to trouble and blame themselves leading to a problem with morale. This can mean that they would start to hate coming to work as they struggle when there. They also may get into arguments with other employees as some employees may think that they are having to put more into the work as some staff may have the training and others may not. This may also start to effect the health of the employee as they may start to develop unhealthy habits such as over drinking or smoking which can put the person at risk. Staff may get jealous as they would find that employees in the same line of work with different companies are getting the training that they are missing out on meaning they would start to become stressed and this could lead to depression and they may become isolated outside of the workplace as they are piled with work that they have to complete at home. In the k study it tells us of the morale of the administration team where it says that it is an all-time low and they don’t get training at all and this causes them to start us arguments, “this has caused arguments because some feel they are having to work harder than others” this is highlights that employees feel that by having no training they are at a disadvantage which could possibly lead to them becoming stressed.

Furthermore another occurrence of work related stress is the work interfering with home and personal life. This can have a major impact as work is not getting completed in the workplace so it is getting taken home to complete, this is meant to be personal time for the employee but it is now just becoming like work this can lead to stress as it will have an effect on family. Due to being overloaded with work employees would if married or have children not be able to spend as much time with them which may stress them out it may also mean that family members start to notice that they are stressed and begin to ask questions which will instead of helping possibly make it worse. They may not have time to do activities they may usually do such as memberships and exercises meaning that it has a negative effect on their wellbeing and health in general. This could also lead to loneliness and will make the worker feel like he is alone and the only one struggling in the company and they may feel withdrawn from their family which could cause stress. In the k study it tells us, “A few have mentioned that they are taking work home and are also having sleepless nights stressing over the situation” a number of staff not only in this k study experience this which have a knock on effect on them and there life’s.
Additionally an occurrence of work related stress is lack of understanding and leadership. This can be a major cause of stress as an employee may not understand what the job is that there are being asked to do and they don’t properly understand their role so it is hard to fully know what to do with their job so they may become stressed. There is an issue with this as due to not being fully aware of what to do they could fall behind and not be able to catch up as they don’t know what to do and this can build up stress and can lead to them trying to find a way that relieves there stress which could possibly damage their health. There could be stress in a lack of leadership as there could be nobody to motivate you if there are troubles and nobody to lead the team. This means that if the worker has troubles and falls behind or has some personal issues then there is nobody to go to that can help out which can cause the problem to build up and eventually the worker may start to suffer from stress.

The method of investigation was a four-part questionnaire. Participants were 81 Glasgow Caledonian University students. There were two hypotheses: 1) problem solving copers will score lower on the Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale. 2) Those high in perceived coursework stress and who reveal wishful thinking strategies will have higher anxiety and depression scores. A multiple regression revealed partial support for both hypotheses – problem strategies had no relationship to coursework stress but wishful thinking and anxiety were both positive predictors of stress; however, contrary to hypothesis 2 depression revealed a strong negative association with stress. The conclusion from this study is that wishful thinkers are also more likely to be anxious; problem focused copers are not anxious, depressed or stressed; stressed students do not suffer from depression.
