Abstract

“A comparative study on study habit towards examination test results among the high school students of St. Michael’s College, Basic Education Department: Basis for study skills intervention”

A high school student, just like only other student has a different way of studying his lessons for the examination day. They may differ in ways but have the same goal, to have good grades.
In this study, the respondents are selected high school students of St. Michael’s College Basic Education Department. They will be given questionnaires to answer about when they study and what are their grades. The results of their answers will be tallied and will show who has the greater population in percentage, students that study ahead of time or those that study a day or night before the exam or has a cramming habit. This study would prove who gets good grades, which of the two ways of studying is more effective.

The result of the study was from the fifty two respondents, 31% has excellent grades and 69% are average, 0% have poor grades. Among the respondents, the result came out that 46% study ahead of time while 54% from the 52 respondents study their lesson a day or a night before. Based on the results, it proves that there are more students who study a night before or has a cramming habit than those that study ahead of time. And there were more students who has average grade, than excellent ones. Therefore, cramming would result to gaining average grades, and so studying ahead of time is an advantage.

This would conclude that cramming study habit should be minimized and be stopped because it gives only a satisfying result, not an excellent one.

Chapter l
The Problem and its Scope

Introduction “He who devotessixteen hours a day to hard study may becomeat sixty as wise as he thought himself at twenty.” – Mary Wilson

The study habits of students differ from each other. There are those who study days or a week before the examination day, while others study a day or night before the exam. Without knowing the result, which study habit is more effective in achieving good grades, those that study in advance, a week before the examination day, or those students who do cramming, or studies a day or night before the exam?

In addition, education is a form of learning in which the knowledge, skills, and habits of a group of people are transferred from one generation to the next through teaching, training, or research.

For students, he only passes or gets high grades if he studies his lesson. Through studying, he gets to understand his lessons well, review past lessons that were forgotten, or even master lessons through lots of practice. The students are always given their time to study for their next lesson and for examination day.

The researchers come up to this main problem of why most of the students are unsatisfied with their examination test results. And how come this factor affects the main problem with the decreasing of grades, time management, and laziness in studying ahead of time, being busy in school activities, peer pressure and dependent on cheating. As we want to come up to an excellent

and satisfactory academic examination test result thereafter. This study aims to find out who gets good or better grades in school, students who study a week before the examination day, or those who study a day or a night before? The study’s respondents are the high school students at St. Michael’s College (SMC). Knowing the grades or average grades of each respondent is also vital for this study. With knowing their grades, the effective study habit will then be identified.

This research will be conducted only in St Michael’s College, Basic Education Department in duration of time quarterly during examinations to monitor the student’s Examination test results based on their habits and also to monitor their performances progressions.

2
Statement of the problem
This research concentrates on what studying technique they must use to improve their grades. The study aims to answer the following questions: 1. What studying technique are they going to use? 2. What are the effects of following the studying technique? Refer your answer to question number one. 3. What are the factors affecting their grades? 4. What conclusion or recommendation can be drawn this study?

3
Conceptual framework
The figure shown below tells the pattern on how the researchers will conduct the study. In this diagram, the researchers consider the possible reasons why the students couldn’t improve their academic activities.
Questionnaires will be distributed quarterly to monitor their academic performances so that we could analyze what really is the best studying technique should be done.

Definition of terms
To widen more your understanding of the common terms used in this study, the following are conceptually and operationally defined:
Study. It refers to methodical acquisition of skill or knowledge. In this study, it is a must thing to do by a student in order to succeed.
Technique. It is the way in which basic physical movements or skills are used. In this study, it is a manner on how you will do or solve things in order.
Quarterly. It means four times a year. In this study, the students achievement is evaluated every periodical exam.
Time.It is a period during which an action, process or condition exists or continues. In this study, time is gold.
Cheating. It refers to an immoral way of achieving a goal. In this study, this is an unjust action of a student usually unprepared for any examinations.

Scope and Limitation of the Study
The study focuses on who among the High school students of St. Michael’s College who gained higher grades, those that study their lesson days or week

5 before the examination day? Or those that study a night before? The researchers limit the study on fifty two or (52) selected students from the star sections of all the high school year level as our respondents to answer certain questionnaires.

This study will be conducted within the portals of St. Michael’s College Basic Education Department located in Barangay San Miguel, St. Mary’s Street Iligan City, Philippines 9200.

The study aims to identify the effective study habit.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

Review of Related Literature
Students often fail to secure good grades despite studying for hours. This is because they have never studied effectively. Unless you know how to make your study hours effective, you cannot get the expected results. Here we will give you some glimpses of effective study skills.

A study is called effective if you can remember and recall the major segments of the syllabus that you have read. Do not try to cram chapters that you fail to understand. You will never be able to remember them. The easiest thing to do is to seek the assistance of your classmates or the teachers to understand the confusing portions.

You have to decide what is most important to you. Make your schedule to address those important needs. You should never compromise with your priorities. Never try to finish too many things at a time. Study all the subjects on a regular basis while allotting some time for revisions. Keep yourself motivated. It is better to know the theme of the chapter that you are planning to study. Reading it line by line will then help you understand it better.

Effective study skills also stress on reading methods. You will see that there are some words that have fonts in bold or italics; you should pay special attention to these. You can also try to find whether the current text refers to any other works of the author that you have read earlier.

7
Effective study skills include listening to the explanations given by teachers. You should read and understand the notes that you have taken in the classroom. Following these aforesaid effective study skills will save you disappointments and help you get the desired results.

The relationship between study habits and academic performance of IT students

This research highlights the relationship between the study habits and the academic performance of second year IT students. A habit is defined as a planned schedule done regularly, while to study is to gain knowledge. Therefore, study habits are done regularly in order to expand learning. It is the way how students accomplish their homework and how they prepare for an exam.
This research discusses how important study habits are in achieving students’ academic good performance. This also presents how many hours the students are studying, how they prepare for an exam, and what is the comfortable place and time for them to study in order to show if these factors are contributors in attaining better academic performance.
A survey questionnaire that is composed of 8 questions related to the topic was given to 50 second year IT students in Far Eastern University – East Asia College. The data gathered in the survey includes the midterm and final grades of the students which shows how they performed during those periods.

8
After the survey, the researchers found out that most of the students spent 1 to2 hours in studying yet, they still accumulated passing grades in the midterm period, and they even got better marks in the final period of the previous term. From the given data, students have different ways on how they will prepare for an upcoming test.

Chapter 3 Research Design and Methodology Research Design
In order to fulfill the objectives of this study, it will use the comparative survey method, to gather data regarding the study habits in which the respondents will be given questionnaires.

In intercultural comparative survey research the quality of research results is not solely dependent on the quality of the respective surveys in participating countries, or cultural groups. The aspect of comparability of the individual surveys is thus given special consideration. To ensure the comparability of different surveys across the boundaries of countries or groups, specific solutions are needed at all steps of the survey as well as in the data analysis.

Chapter 5
Summary, Findings, Conclusion and Recommendation

This chapter presented the summary of findings, conclusion and recommendations regarding this study. After the date were tabulated, inspected and then analyzed, the researchers came up with this summary finding.

Summary
This study was focused to the studying method used by the high school students of St. Michael’s College Basic Education Department. The respondents are the selected students from the star sections of all the high school year level. In choosing the respondents, the researchers used the stratified sampling method and added two (2) respondents in each star section to come up with the minimum number of the respondents which is fifty (50). Moreover, this study made used of the descriptive survey method of the data gathering procedure to get the qualitative data.

Summary of Findings 1. Majority of the high school students answered yes when it comes to studying before examination day. 2. Majority of the high school students answered that they study a night before the examination day. 3. Majority of the high school students rated average in their academic grades. 4. Half of the respondents are satisfied with their grades and the other half says that they are unsatisfied. 5. Majority of the high school students answered laziness on factors affecting their study habits. 6. Majority of the high school students answered yes when it comes to caring in getting high grades. 7. Majority of the high school students answered that they will listen to their teacher while discussing.

33
Conclusion
Based on the results gathered from the respondents, the researchers conclude that majority of the respondents were actually studying before the examination day. Most of the respondents were actually studying a night before the examination day and as a result, they got an average grade from the first quarter up to the present. Half of the respondents were satisfied with their grades in studying a night before the examination day and in studying ahead of time. There are many factors affecting their grades and majority of them were lazy and are lacking of time management in studying. Students must spend time to study in order to improve themselves and to get higher grades. Majority of the respondents care to get high grades. By that, they’re focus in their grades by listening to their teachers while discussing and to review their lessons. In short, most of them are cramming during examination days.

Recommendations 1. Teachers must have a closure between his student and try to help them cope up with their lesson. Teach them how to manage their time and teachers should also improve or enhance their teaching skills to catch the student’s attention while discussing. It could make the students have fun while learning.

2. Students must manage and balance their time well. They must not lose focus on their studies even how busy they are with their extra-curricular activities in and out of the campus.

3. Future researchers should expand and expose more about this study to come up with a more effective and concrete conclusion and recommendation to our dear students and teachers.

4. Parents should guide their children in their studies and in every activities in the school they’re involved. Moral support should also be consider the most aside from the financial support and basic needs.

''Effective Study Skills Are the Sole Foundation of a Sound Education "

...ESSAY WRITING ''Effective study skills are the sole foundation of a sound education" The title of this essay could suggest that by applying the correct methods, habits and practices to the learning experience (study skills) and by developing these through practice and reflection that this in itself provides the exclusive means of progress in learning. Gettinger and Seibert (2002) reiterate that study skills are essential to any academic subject and successful outcomes are achieved by a wide variety of students employing them. By having the appropriate knowledge and applying effective study skills thereafter, the results are more likely to be favorable. Paradoxically, students may go through school with a sound level of a knowledge but experience difficulties due to not having the right study skills. (Stella Cottrell 4th edition) Covers many of these learning skills such as Be Organised This covers all areas for study such as looking at your time and how you organise it, your space to study in ensuring that is quite and you will not be disturbed, your literature, notes and files on your PC or mobile device where they are how they are all stored and in a place that you can find them. Keep Motivated This would involve setting goals short and long term in order to stay focused and achieves a feeling of reward for those milestones that are achieved. Staying positive as thinking negatively can erode away any confidence you may have to...

...Persistence Factors in Secondary School Additional Language Study | The research reported here concerns the voluntary decision of New Zealand (NZ) students, at the end of Year 10, to continue or not to continue with their hitherto voluntary study of Japanese, commencing at the beginning of Year 9 (n = 546). This decision is taken to be a clear indication of persistence, one of three fundamental aspects of motivation, and was investigated in relation to student attitudes towards seven different dimensions of additional language (AL)* learning and certain background variables. Analyses involved the validation of an attitude scale, multivariate testing for associations between persistence, attitude factors and certain background variables, including student ethnic background. Discussion of results included the positing of a multidimensional self-determinative orientation factor, comparisons with similar studies, practical implications and limitations. | APA :http://www.jllonline.co.uk/journal/jllearn/4_1/holt.htm Baldauf, R.B. & Lawrence, H. Homework Policy

...Homework is an issue that affects both students and teachers on a daily basis. As teachers we must expect great things from our students and for our students to achieve great things, we need them to study and do work at home to help emphasize new information and concepts being taught in the classroom. Teachers must teach self- motivation and actively engage their students to do homework and study on a nightly basis. For students as well as their families homework can often be seen as chore that they must find time for between afterschool activities, their parents work schedules, and just wanting to play. Teachers must find just the right balance of homework to help reinforce what is being taught in the classroom while allowing for family time as well as accommodating the busy schedules many American’s face. Ms. Zalogwe has a zero-tolerance homework policy due to problems with students and homework in the past. She clearly lays out the policy at the beginning of the year and sends parents a handout so that they are also informed of her policies. It is important as a teacher to clearly explain to students as well as their parents exactly what is expected from them. I do believe a teacher should allow for some flexibility in their homework policies, while at the same time teaching self-motivation. Homework should reinforce what is being taught in the classroom and allow for positive social interaction. Homework should accommodate the varying learning levels found in the classroom...

Study Habits

...CHILDREN`S STUDY HABITS AND PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT TIFFANY YOUNG Department of Psychology Missouri Western State University Sponsored by: BRIAN CRONK (cronk@missouriwestern.edu) ABSTRACT Children`s study habits have been related to parental involvement for many years. Parental involvement includes many different situational factors, such as, how much time a parent studies with their child, how much time a parent allows a child to watch television, and if the parents smoke. In this study fourth grade children were given a survey about situational factors in relationship to their parents. The demographic information that was included was their age and gender. There were some significant differences of situational factors parents participate in compared to the study habits a child retains. INTRODUCTION Children’s study habits and the degree of parental involvement in studying seem to show differences in how they learn and how serious they are about learning. Some examples of what can influence children and their scholastic achievement are if their parents study with them, how much television they watch, and if they even like school. Luster and McAdoo (1996) believe that parents influence what a child brings to school and how well a child acquires school related skill throughout the school years such as working with a child on homework and this can influence other behaviors such as study habits that will affect the child’s achievement. Parent training interventions are highly...

Relationship of Study Time and Academic Performance

...CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION a. Background of the Study Academic performance of students may be affected or shaped by a lot of factors to include time management, access to facilities, conducive learning environment, presence or influence of institutional support, and other resources which in one way or another can contribute to scholastic achievement. However, there is not much research, particularly in a local setting, showing focus on the relationship between study time allocation and academic achievement more specifically among fourth year and fifth year engineering and architecture students. It has been observed that among engineering and architecture students, spending much time in studying is not a common practice, or at the very least, is not admitted. There is a question as to whether or not studying does matter especially that such has not been very apparent in the College of Engineering and Architecture. The level of diligence displayed by students of other courses or their devotion to allocating study time appears to be unusual or uncommon in the College of Engineering and Architecture since a substantive level of understanding to the mind-boggling engineering and architecture-related theories and doctrines as commonly expressed in formulas is preferred and is reflected on the degree of intelligence among the students. In other words, analytical intelligence in numbers and figures and not merely diligence defines the students of engineering and architecture. Thus...

...1. Introduction The purpose of this PDP module is helping people gain the personal, academic, reflective and professional skills. In this report, I am going to reflect on what I have learnt and I need to improve. In academic area my strongest skills are note-taking, referencing and information skills. However, in presentation skills, academic writing and learning skills are the area that I still need improving. In career-related skills, I am good at self-management, adaptability and team-working. On contrary, I still need to learn how to manage time efficiently, budgeting and communication well. 2. Academic skills Three strongest skills: * Note-making. By taking e-lesson from PDP, I know how to do note-making effectively last term and keep practice during this study period. In terms of me, I need to point out the key words from the messy information and then focus and re-organize the key words to the pattern that I am familiar with. Finally, I need to revise it and concise it times and times again to make a higher and more depth understanding of my notes. After I tried again and again, I realized that I can revise quiet easy by focusing on the main parts teacher referred in class. As note-making is pretty useful, I use it almost every day and now I can make notes quickly and precisely, which plays a vital part in my university study. * Referencing Referencing, this can be seen as a basis of academic writing (Neville, C. 2012). During term two periods, we had...

Meyer LEARNING STYLES AND STUDY HABITS Abstract In this study I examined the potential for using learning styles inventory data to help Advanced Placement Environmental Science students work to their strengths and study more effectively. Researchers in previous studies found that when students were taught how to accommodate their own learning style preferences, their confidence, attitude, and academic achievement improve (Boström & Lassen, 2006; Dunn et al., 2009; Lovelace, 2005). In this study, I recorded students study habits using a pretest and student interviews and then implemented an intervention in which I taught students new study techniques based on their perceptual preferences. After the intervention, I used a posttest and more student interviews to determine if students changed their study habits and record how they felt about these changes. My students reacted positively to this intervention, reporting that it was helpful and that they would continue to use their new strategies. 2 Keywords: Study skills, learning styles, learning style preferences LEARNING STYLES AND STUDY HABITS In this study I examined the potential for using learning styles inventory data to teach students how to make accommodations that cater to their preferences while studying...

Success With Less Stress Research Paper

...the sake of their academic future. Students can end up sleep deprived if overloaded with homework and can even resort to self-harm and illegal activities to cope with the stress. To avoid having students burn themselves out, teachers should assign no more than fifteen minutes of homework to high school students a day and only assign homework with obvious value. Parents often hear the begrudging complaints from their children about having to sit down for hours of homework after school. These students aren’t focused and engaged in learning; they’re mindlessly completing a given task. In reality, this is not helping the student at all, and only creating an unhealthy attitude toward school. The article “Success with Less Stress” discusses a study...
