...FUNDAMENTALS // Let’s Be Clear: How to Manage Communication Styles With all the talk about diversity and the ever-sopopular “four generations in the workplace,” it’s time for training professionals to not only focus their efforts on employees’ physical differences, but on their communication styles as well. By Jada Edmondson There are four basic communication styles: expressive, systematic, sympathetic, and direct. Our communication styles affect how others’ react to and perceive us. Knowing your communication style and knowing how to manage others’ communication styles can reduce conflict, increase productivity, and improve teamwork in the workplace. 30 | T+D | SEPTEMBER 2009 Generally, diversity training and seminars about generational differences seek to increase cultural awareness, reduce conflict, and promote teamwork. ...Communication Style Case Study Sherryanne Paul-John HCS/350 August 24, 2015 Brenda Harton Communication Style Case Study Everything that's said and done conveys a message that is labeled communication. From the verbal style using pitch and tone to nonverbal cues of body language and touch. The nurse-client communicative relationship should reflect the caring nature embedded in our profession, to achieve positive outcomes of our work. Boggs (2011) states, effective communication has been shown to produce better health outcomes, greater client satisfaction, and increased client understanding. This paper will show communication styles from a personal perspective and three other scenarios within the healthcare setting. The discussion will focus on why communicating effectively is important in health care and how the outcome of these interactions could improve staff relations and impact patient care. A Personal Perspective: The clinic has six RNs and one aide, two teams came together due to a department merger. Moral was low, control was lost and as a result, an "us versus them" mentality became evident from the onset. Everyone was in passive aggressive mode on a daily basis. Everyone had strong personalities. The tension was palpable. The team was split in half and with no team spirit and no team efforts the problem has never been solved. Now conflict is a natural part of a human relationship; however, unresolved conflict interferes with success in meeting goals (Boggs...

...Bon Nelson Sibulan COMMUNICATION STYLES: Driver and Analytical Define and distinguish Communication Style from other communication styles: Communication Style is the window on how the world perceives you. It affects our relationships, career, and emotional well-being thus understanding your communication style, as well as the communication style of the people you work and interact with is important for an individual in order to be successful in business. Listed below are 4 Communication Styles: 1. Driver 2. Analytical 3. Expresser 4. Relater Both Driver and Analytical Style of communication are more “Reserved” than Expresser and Relater Style of communication which are more “Open”. However, Driver Style of communication is more “Direct” than Analytical which is “Indirect”. To further distinguish, table below identifies specific traits of individuals who strongly practice each communication style: What are the Verbal Cues for Each Style: “What can we expect from their presentation?” “What can we expect from their presentation?” Driver Style of Communication is often practice by individuals that are Action and Result Oriented. Thus they are most concern and focus on the bottom figures or the end result. “That’s a great recovery. How did you it?” “That’s a great recovery. How did you it?” Analytical Style of Communication on the other hand is often practices by individual that are Process Oriented. Thus they prefer to communicate about systems...

...Learning Team Communication Style Case Study HCS/350 Learning Team Communication Style Case Study Successful communication skills are essential to achieve a positive work environment. Words should be carefully chosen to communicate a message of trust, respect, and teamwork. Sometimes in the quest to communicate with co-workers, it becomes difficult to use the right words and tone. The words they use and the way in which they are delivered to the delegate make the difference between a successful and a frustrating episode in delegation (Hansten & Jackson, p. 278). In this paper, our team will review three case studies. The case studies show different communication styles. These styles include: aggressive, passive or nonaggressive, and assertive. The team will examine what took place between the delegator and the delegate in each case study, explain the communication style, and discuss the consequences. Case Study One For the first case study, Robin, a psych nurse, is communicating in an aggressive style with the nurse’s aid, Rashad. She is rude and condescending to Rashad’s words. In return, Rashad remains quiet: a passive response. Rashad’s thoughts are passive aggressive and could not be read by others. At first, Rashad was passive by sitting quietly and not speaking, but had thoughts of future passive-aggressive behaviors to retaliate against the nurse. Aggressive and passive-aggressive communication lays the ground work for tension-filled...

...Communication Style Case Study Daneal Dobbs NUR/350 David Catoe Communication Style Case Study Communication in the workplace is imperative for good patient outcomes. Not just any communication will do, though. Effective communication is key in forming positive relationships with staff and patients. Being respectful, kind and specific with communication techniques will benefit all who are involved. Noneffective communication, on the other hand, can do more harm than good. This paper will focus on three scenarios as well as a personal scenario and the type of communication that is used. Scenario one involves Rashad, who is an aide and Robin, who is a staff registered nurse (RN). Rashad and Robin are attending a staff meeting, and Rashad speaks about his role as an aide and how he tries to anticipate the needs of the patient. Robin quickly lets him know that he is only an aide, and he needs just to do what he is told. Rashad did not voice anything else but rather sat quietly plotting his revenge against Robin (Hansten & Jackson, 2009). Robin’s response to Rashad was aggressive. Rashad’s initial response to sitting down and be quiet was passive, but his quiet plotting for revenge is passive/aggressive. Passiveness in Rashad’s case probably prevented an outburst or argument in the middle of this team meeting. Unfortunately, he is sitting quietly planning revenge on Robin. By not saying anything else, Rashad is exhibiting passive behavior but the plotting...

...LIFT EV'RY VOICE AND SING Also known as "The Black National Anthem" by James Weldon Johnson Lift ev'ry voice and sing, Till earth and heaven ring. Ring with the harmonies of Liberty; Let our rejoicing rise, High as the list'ning skies, Let it resound loud as the rolling sea. Sing a song full of the faith that the dark past has taught us, Sing a song full of the hope that the present has brought us; Facing the rising sun of our new day begun, Let us march on till victory is won. Stony the road we trod, Bitter the chast'ning rod, Felt in the days when hope unborn had died; Yet with a steady beat, Have not our weary feet, Come to the place for which our fathers sighed? We have come over a way that with tears has been watered, We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered, Out from the gloomy past, Till now we stand at last Where the white gleam of our bright star is cast. God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who has brought us thus far on the way; Thou who has by Thy might, Led us into the light, Keep us forever in the path, we pray. Lest our feet stray from the places, our God, where we met Thee, Lest our hearts, drunk with the wine of the world, we forget Thee, Shadowed beneath thy hand, May we forever stand, True to our God, True to our native...

...Different Styles and Communication in the Workplace Mary Ward Organizational Communications Professor Frank Prihoda As people grow up and enter the work environment they come to realize the many cultures and style amongst their co-workers. We first need to understand the concept of communication style and its effects on interpersonal relations. Once we understand the concept than we can realize the benefits that we can derive from understanding of communication styles. We can define communication styles by the way people received impressions on how we present ourselves to them and our actions toward them. The person that we are communicating to doesn’t know what are inter most thoughts or feelings, so they have to judge us by our appearance and how we present ourselves. “Each person has a unique communication style. By getting to know your style, you can achieve greater self-awareness and learn how to develop more effective interpersonal relations with coworkers. Accurate self-knowledge is truly the starting point for effectiveness at work. It is also essential for managing the three key relationships: relationships with self, with another person, and with members of a group. If your career objective is to become a supervisor or manager, you will benefit by being more aware of your employees’ communication styles. Job satisfaction and productivity increase when employees feel that their leaders understand their personal needs and take these into consideration.” (Gates...
