Sample Student Essay – Body Paragraphs

[BODY PARAGRAPH 1] To start, I need a secure and comfortable financial future. [TOPIC SENTENCE] I currently work in retail at The GAP during the day while my husband works nights and weekends. Importantly, this job does not pay as well as I thought it would, and it does not fulfill my passion. My dream is to own my own business. I really love fashion and want to own and run my own boutique. Strayer has a strong business program, and the recruiter was so kind and supportive when I told her my dreams. She thinks I can do it, and I feel great about that. [SUPPORTING SENTENCES] As a result, owning my own business will help me contribute to my household income so my husband doesn’t have to work two jobs. [CONCLUDING SENTENCE] [BODY PARAGRAPH 2] Another reason I came back to college is very personal. [TOPIC SENTENCE] I No one in my family has ever even attended let alone graduated college. Therefore, I will be first generation to accomplish this, and that makes me so proud. This is one of my deep underlying reasons to finish school. I want to prove to my family, and my children, that I can do it. Furthermore, maybe my kids will want to follow me down the same path. This might also influence other members of my family who have had a lifelong dream of attending a university too but haven’t taken that first step yet. [SUPPORTING SENTENCES] In essence, I want to make history in my own family. [CONCLUDING SENTENCE] [BODY PARAGRAPH 3] The last reason I chose to come back to school is an emotional one. [TOPIC SENTENCE] Sadly, my teachers always told me that I was a terrible writer and an unfocused student. This made me feel bad about myself and I want to prove those instructors wrong and become more confident in my abilities. It turns out that I am dyslexic and it was not caught until late in my education. In short, it turns out I am not a bad writer! I just see things differently. [SUPPORTING SENTENCES] I learned this when I got a tutor, and he told me that Albert Einstein was dyslexic also, so I no longer feel bad about myself. [CONCLUDING SENTENCE]

What Does Success Mean To You

...Success means to me and my group in the context of giving other people more freedom and choice in deciding how their work will be accomplished is that once freedom is given, the work that needs to be accomplished will be accomplished properly and effectively. In this context, failure to us means that once freedom is given to other people, everything that happens after giving them freedom will be chaotic and messy. What I mean by “chaotic and messy” is that the people in the group will start doing the things on their own without thinking about how it will affect the group as a whole and this would be the worst case scenario because at that point, no one really knows what they’re doing. With this being the worst outcome, it would affect me being...

What Success Means to Me

...What Is Success In My Opinion Some people may measure success by a large house, a cool car, a boat or maybe even a cottage by the lake (I think I just may have listed the American dream). However, my definition of success doesn’t list any of these. In my opinion, success does not have anything to do with material goods but rather happiness, health and overcoming the struggles and the hard times. One of the ways I measure success is in how happy a person is. Some people may feel the happiest when they are around luxurious items. However, this is not a true measure of success. Happiness for most people including me is a happy and loving family. My family is what will define most of my success. Also, happiness means trying new things and a lifestyle that supports positivity which will make me a happy person. I also consider health a defining factor in success. People feel unsuccessful if they, or someone they love, are not healthy. For instance, can parents feel successful if their child is ill? This is why doctors, nurses, and hospitals are so important. Not only do they allow people to live longer, but they also allow people to feel successful in their life. Finally, success to me also means overcoming the hard times. No one likes hard and rough times filled with tears and pain. Often when I overcome the pain it feels like I have accomplished something it might even be as little as a...

What Success Means to Me

...What Success Means to Me Being successful can be viewed in many different ways, such as being happy, having a nice house, being rich, being a good mother, or having something to make someone envy you. Many people only look at success in two ways: popularity and money. To me, success means to set a goal for myself, plan the steps to achieve it, carry through with the plan, and finally to achieve my goal. There is no better feeling than when you have finally accomplished your goal that you’ve set for yourself. My first goal is to earn my degree in my chosen profession which is Marine Science. I never really knew what I wanted to do in terms of a career. I knew what hobbies I loved, and so I decided to turn them into something that I would do for the rest of my life. The next objective that I’ve set for myself is to find the perfect job in the career field that I have chosen that is best suited for me. There’s a quote by Confucius that says “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life” and that is what my aim is for myself. The last goal that I will accomplish is to travel someplace that I’ve never been before every year. I’ve set a few goals for myself in life, and I plan on accomplishing them all. Now that I know what my goals are in life, I have to start planning the necessary steps to achieve them. For me to accomplish my first goal in life I have to decide which University overseas could help me in earning my degree after I have completed...

Personal Responsibility Is a Master Key to Success

...around you. Parents teach these values to their children at a very early age. Parents teach commitment by encouraging children to follow through with a promise, dedication by encouraging them to keep trying, regardless of how many times they may fail, and accountability if they choose not to. These are all building blocks to learning personal responsibility. As a mother and a college student, I have the personal responsibility to dedicate myself to my children and my education. I have had to utilize all resources available to me to be successful at both, and it takes honest commitment and dedication to achieve that success. Balancing family and school is a huge personal responsibility and I strive with honesty and integrity to be the best parent, teacher, and student I can be. There is an enormous correlation between personal responsibility and college success. A person cannot obtain one without maintaining the other. Election

...Success Success can come in many various ways. Many men and women generally interpret success as being affluent in life. The meaning of success is clear, but complex because many people define success differently. The poor, the unpopular, and the popular people have their ways of being successful, while the rich have their own ways of being successful as well. People who are successful in life have a strong passion for their work. According to Oxford Dictionary, success is defined as the accomplishment of an aim or purpose. In Tom Perrotta’s novel Election, the two main characters, Tracy Flick and Paul Warren, illustrate their differences in their motivation and work ethic when running for student body president. Tracy’s disadvantage makes it harder for her to run for student body president against Paul, who is privileged, for success. In order to be successful, Tracy has to be self-motivated. Motivation is defined as the act or process of giving someone a reason for doing something. In the beginning of chapter one, Tracy explains her qualifications when running for president. Her qualifications were listed as, “President of the Junior Class, Treasurer of the SGA, Assistant Editor of The Watchdog, statistician for the basketball team, and star of last year’s musical (Oklahoma!, in case you’re wondering) (Perrotta 8-9). Tracy’s achievements made her qualified to run for student body president as well as portrays her as a great academic student represent of her high school...

Failure Is Not Daunting

...popular psychology, many books like 99 Steps or Tips for Accomplishment are written about how people achieve success. Even though numerous people pay attention to the value of success especially in this Era of Knowledge, saying “failure is a good thing” astonishes me. In Jon Carroll’s article, “Failure is a Good Thing”, he asserts that failure is a beginning, not the end of the world. Failure is how we learn, that is, failure is a natural part of our learning process and a proof that we are trying. Carroll also contends that success is boring since it becomes tedious after a while because of not feeding the soul and keeping us from risking and trying new things. Most of us fear failure, but failure and believing in the possibility of it offer some oppurtunities: It encourages creativity, provides us with new beginnings, and reminds us of being human. First of all, fault is an important teacher that promotes innovation as Jon Carroll connotated. Some of our most memorable lessons come from the stories of our biggest mistakes. The history books are full of those who failed repeatedly before reaching the zenith of success in their fields: Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. For example, if Edison had not taken lessons from his mistakes, maybe he could not have discovered the light bulb. His failures became didactic for him and made him one step closer to success. In addition, an atmosphere in which the possibility of fault is believed prepares the groundwork for creativity...
