A text, a Facebook wall post, a blog– a line or two is all it takes to wound someone's self-esteem, to bring tears, to ruin a relationship. With the outburst of modern technology, old-school bullying is out and a new type of bullying has arrived. But while stuffing someone in a locker is an obvious sign of harassment, with no bruises or bloody noses as evidence of abuse, cyber-bullying often doesn't raise alarms until it's too late. The problem with our society is it takes this girl to bring up suicide awareness when there was already thousands probably millions of others who have committed suicide. After the suicide a group of people made a support page on Facebook that now has over 800,000 likes. It’s great that they are showing her support now, but where were they before when she was crying for help. People don’t care about anything until they are gone. ...Freedom of Expression or Freedom to Bully? Social media has come a long way during the last few decade, and the improvement of technology has made everything online easier to manage. Social media is meant as a valuable outlet for freedom of expression, but is widely abused in order to bully and threaten others without any fear. The purpose of this research paper is to show how online bullying goes a long way, and hurts others in the long run. Bullies get online and let out their hatred/frustration on victims, without the confrontation, and without the immediate consequences. There are many ways that social media is more widely used as a weapon and some of the reasons are, bullying online can lead to depression/anxiety, even to suicide, and the bullies are able to hide behind a keyboard and threaten others with no consequences. We expect the internet to be safe and a reliable source to express ourselves, yet others use it as a scapegoat to bully others and create an environment where others don’t feel safe. From personal experiences, facts, statistics, and the words of experts, social media has been deemed an unfit outlet for teens because they use it to freely express their hatred towards others, with little to no consequence. There are many facts that prove how social media is used for seemingly inappropriate behavior towards others, and making the internet as a whole a place to ruin other people’s lives. Doing research on this topic was really hard because of...

Egan,1 Elizabeth Cox, M.D. Ph.D.,1 Henry Young, Ph.D.,2 Kerry E. Gannon, B.S.,1 and Tara Becker, Ph.D.1 Background: Depression is common and frequently undiagnosed among college students. Social networking sites are popular among college students and can include displayed depression references. The purpose of this study was to evaluate college students’ Facebook disclosures that met DSM criteria for a depression symptom or a major depressive episode (MDE). Methods: We selected public Facebook profiles from sophomore and junior undergraduates and evaluated personally written text: ‘‘status updates.’’ We applied DSM criteria to 1-year status updates from each profile to determine prevalence of displayed depression symptoms and MDE criteria. Negative binomial regression analysis was used to model the association between depression disclosures and demographics or Facebook use characteristics. Results: Two hundred profiles were evaluated, and profile owners were 43.5% female with a mean age of 20 years. Overall, 25% of profiles displayed depressive symptoms and 2.5% met criteria for MDE. Profile owners were more likely to reference depression, if they averaged at least one online response from their friends to a status update disclosing depressive symptoms (exp(B) 5 2.1, Po.001), or if they used Facebook more frequently...

...A 'digital divide' can be described as an economic inequality between groups, this simply refers to the amount of people that have access to the latest information technologies and to those who do not. There is a clear digital divide in our modern society, the main denominator being age. Because of the recent advancements in technology, the modern adolescent has grown up with all things digital i.e. The internet, television, games consoles etc. In complete contrast, the adults of todays world lacked most of these ‘modern day necessities’ growing up. The complete and utter difference in lifestyles has ultimately led to a rewiring of the human brain. Children of the modern world are fully adjusted to modern technology and digital media from a very early age whereas the older generation need more time to adapt to the often complicated new technology. "We see marked differences in behaviour within countries – with a clear divide between younger and older groups. Younger people are more likely to use social media and aggregator brands and in all countries they show a strong preference for online." (Newman, Nic, NN, (2013), 'Digital News Report 2013', Uneven Pace of Change - Differences between and within Countries) There are of course many advantages of the new digital society in which we live. The internet can be used as a tool to connect with people all over the world, business conferences can be held via the internet in real time saving time and money for thousands of businesses...

...Cyber bullying Everyone take a minute to close your eyes. Raise your hand if you have ever been the victim of bullying, now open your eyes. Now raise your hand if you have ever been the bully, now open your eyes. Finally, raise your hand if you have ever watched someone being bullied, open your eyes. We can all think of experiences involving bullying, whether we were the victim, the bully or a witness. More recently though, cyber bullying has sky rocketed due to all the social media sites now available to use. Cyber bullying and just bullying in general, has caused so many lives of young teens and adults to be taken. In order to put an end to it, or even help the popularity of it, we must open our eyes and look the bully right in the face. Cyber bullying is when someone is tormented, threatened, harassed, humiliated, or just a target by a mobile phone or internet, most of the time, both. Cyber bullying can include anything from the list provided above, by text message, instant message, email, blogs, social websites, etc. As more and more children gain access to these, the more people are being harmed. This topic is usually forgotten about once children reach 18, out of high school, which makes the severity of the topic increase. Cyber bullying does not go away with age, race, ethnicity, eye color, hair color, wealth, etc, it just takes on a different name with more consequences that could affect someone for the rest of their life. While growing up, movies make a...

...In today’s society there is evidence of ostracism everywhere. It happens in schools, at work and online, within groups of friends, and between strangers. Most people have probably felt this feeling of being ignored, left out, or bullied at one point in their life. For most, it’s not a big deal, the situation blows over and normal life continues, however, for some ostracism can be life threatening. Increased access and popularity of the internet, especially social sites like Facebook and Twitter make escaping ostracism almost impossible. In the article “Social Exclusion causes Self-Defeating Behavior” by Jean Twenge, Kathleen Catanese and Roy Baumeister, they explain that out of ostracism comes a natural instinct to try to turn a negative feeling into a positive feeling for the victim. Unfortunately, in an attempt to produce a positive outcome, negative ones most often happen. A good example in our society is in the latest media coverage of homosexual males who have committed suicide as a result of extreme ostracism and self-defeating behaviors that arise from feeling alone. I would argue that today’s society is much more accepting and supportive of those who are homosexual, however, although overall society accepts these individuals, there are still many who are not accepting and go out of their way to make people feel “different” and ‘wrong”. In the case of the student at Rutgers University, it was found that not only was he feeling ostracized in school and online, his parents...

...students believing that adult help is infrequent and ineffective. I didn’t know that harassment and bullying has been linked to 75 percent of school-shooting incidents. There have been many cases of suicide because of bullying. One of the recent ones was the suicide of Amanda Todd. She committed suicide on October 10, 2012 at her home in Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. She was 16 years old when she died. On September 7, 2012, she posted a 9-minute video on YouTube titled My Story: Struggling, bullying, suicide and self-harm, which showed her using flash cards telling her experiences being bullied. The reason she was bullied was because when she was in 7th grade, she used video chat to meet new people over the internet. People she met would always give her complements about her looks. A stranger convinced her to bare her breasts on camera. He later blackmailed her with threats to expose the topless photo to her friends unless she gave a “show”. The photo of her circulated the internet. She moved to different places to start fresh, but the individual would always disguise himself as a student coming new to school. She tried to kill herself by drinking bleach and an overdose of drugs, but it didn’t work. Students from her school would make fun of her because she failed in her suicide and in her grades. After the entire nightmare, on October 10, 2012 at about 6:00 PM, she was found hanged at her home. Like I said before, most of the teenagers have a very low self-esteem and...

...Mid-Term case study Tet on reporting suicide. This advice came from 50 international studies on suicide and contagion. The framework of these tips enables reflection on the propriety of Split Image. The Dart Center prohibits the use of photos that show the suicide’s location, grieving family and friends, and memorials of the deceased. Many of Split Image’s most poignant moments came from its use of photos. Split Image included photos Madison posted of herself celebrating life with family and friends. A photo of the square in front of the parking garage where Madison jumped from was also included. Most of the photos Fagan included are the ones that comprise Madison’s memorial page. Fagan’s premise focused on the pervasiveness of misleading social media, which made using Madison’s photos essential. Fagan is successful in delivering her point, but in the meantime she advances photos that glorify suicide and give credence to morbid curiosity. Language is meaningful when discussing suicide. The Dart Center stresses the detriments of depicting suicide as occurring without warning. Split Image describes Madison’s life up until her last few months as seemingly...
