Setting and time-travel shed new lights on racism because of how time-travel compared and contrasted slavery to prejudism. The original setting of the story is in the year 1976, from the point of view of a black woman named Dana, age 26 married to a white man named Kevin. In the mere 12 years since segregation was abolished people’s prejudice against each other did not disappear which is evident throughout the story. Dana tells us about her and Kevin, pre wedding talking to their families about marrying someone from the opposite or race. Kevin’s sister’s reaction was different then he had hoped. “ I thought I knew her… she didn't want to meet you, wouldn’t have you in her house--- or me either if I married you,” (pages 229-230). Although Kevin…show more content… This time period was approximately 50 years before slavery was abolished and as a twentieth century black woman abruptly thrown into those harsh times and conditions, it was horrible. After inevitably being forced into slavery, Dana was religiously scolded, whipped on three different occasions and suffered constant abuse while living in fear. Dana had to endure and adapt to this hard life while she played guardian angel to her problem starting, abusive white ancestor named Rufus. Dana successfully saved Rufus’ life on more than one occasion. First she saved him from drowning, then from his own arson, next she helped mend his broken leg, then she saved him from being killed by an angered slave and finally she saved him from drowning again but in a puddle filled with his own vomit mixed with whiskey and muddy water. Rufus repaid his gratitude to her by depriving her of her husband, blackmailing her, arranging and partaking in her physical and emotional abuse, almost killing her one true love and almost raping her which ultimately led to his downfall. Dana had to quickly learn how to bite her tongue, grit her teeth and respect people who didn't deserve to even be alive.
