...everybody loves that. All these things sound great! So why aren’t we all doing it? Well, then there is also all the cons. And the cons are bad. Really bad. So bad that it kills many people every year. It can give Sunburns, skin damage, eye damages, cancer, etc. And in worst cases that can lead to death, and that happens. Then it’s very important that you remember to use sunscreen. If you don’t remember sunscreen your skin can be harmed, and you can get cancer, and cancer is lethal. Sun screen has a huge impact on how your skin tolerates the sun’s rays, due to its neutralization of UVA rays and UVB rays. UVA rays is what makes us look older, they make wrinkles. UVB rays is what cause sunburns. But not getting any of the UVA or UVB rays is inevitable, it’s only when you are getting too many it is dangerous. I personally love being outside and enjoying the sun. I can lay back and enjoy life, with an ice cold coke. But of course I TRY to remember the sunscreen, without that I would get a bad sunburn, and that has happened many times. But I really do not think that much about the consequences, which is quite stupid, because I know it’s bad for your health. Nothing really serious has happened to me later on, if I have gotten sunburned, but I think as soon as I get a really bad sunburn, I have learned my lesson. When I’m outside in the sun, I like to play football or tennis. And the dangerous part of doing...

...Jason’s Case Study Abstract Jason, a twenty six year old male, is seen in the urgent care clinic with a laceration to his arm. He cut his arm on roof sheeting while at work. While assessing the laceration on Jason’s arm, the nurse notices that he has a sunburn, freckles and moles on his skin. While Jason is still in the urgent care, the patient’s wife calls and asked if the medical staff would assess a mole on her husband. The nurse also educated Jason regarding sunburns, changes in freckles, moles, and lesions. His complexion, hair and eye color puts Jason at a higher risk for cancer and complications of being in the sun. The nurse also reminded Jason to make an appointment to have his family doctor check the laceration on his arm to make sure no infection or complications have developed. Jason’s Case Study After the nurse introduces herself to Jason, she gets his vital signs, height and weight. The nurse or the doctor per facility protocol should cleanse the wound to remove any dirt or debris from the laceration site. The nurse measures the laceration in length and width. The nurse checks the laceration for foreign bodies or debris in his arm. The doctor may order an x-ray of his arm to rule out any foreign bodies that may be in Jason’s arm. Saline gauze should be placed over the laceration site until the doctor comes into the examination room to see the patient. The nurse asks Jason if he has had a tetanus shot in the past five years. Jason should...

...Administrative Ethics Rebecca Schroeder HCS 335 June 24, 2012 James Dockins Administrative Ethics Paper The article chosen was from fox news published on June 25 is about how two girls with very fair skin where not allowed to apply sun screen to their skin before a school field day because there was not doctors not present. The staff commented that the girls were getting burned but nothing could be done because of state and school policy. The district administrator stated “Some of the ingredients in sun screen can cause allergic reaction sin some children.” Not being able to apply sunscreen to the children, who both had very fair skin, led to the girls having to be taken to the emergency room in Tacoma, Washington. The girls both sustained second degree burns on their faces and body. The mother is outraged because the staff recognized the signs that the children were getting sunburned but because of the school policy there was nothing they could do for the children. (Fox news, 2012) This issue is one for every person with children in public schools with the exception for the state of California where it is ok for children to apply sunscreen to themselves. The nation is told hundreds of times a day about the risks of skin cancer and ageing caused by sun exposure and if children are going to be out in the sun they need to have sunscreen applied and applied often. For many allowing this to occur in our schools is a form of neglect. Most school districted policies do not...

...outdoor tanning causes sunburns. Tanning is a browning or darkening of the skin, as by exposure to the sun. (D, 2004) While tanning, the sun transmits ultraviolet rays into the skin, ultraviolet A and ultraviolet B. Ultraviolet A rays are more common than ultraviolet B rays during these transmissions. Ultraviolet A rays permeate deep into skin layers, while producing a tan. (Woo & Eide, 2010, p.61-71) The penetration of these rays cause permanent skin damage. (Hurevich & Gilon, 2007) Ultraviolet B rays causes sunburns, early skin aging, aids the body in forming vitamin D, and can cause skin cancer. (Hurevich & Gilon, 2007) The sun diffuses ultraviolet rays A and B. During tanning, dangerous...

...cosmeticians. The authors sought empirical evidence to assert, “ingestion of HF (high flavanol) chocolate is photoprotective and thus can contribute to nutritional protection against skin damage from sunlight” (Williams, Tamburic, & Lally, 2009, p. 170). They organized a study with 30 volunteers in good health, who were tested at the beginning and end of a twelve-day span. Half of the randomly selected subjects ate a daily dose of conventionally-manufactured, low flavanol (LF) chocolate as a snack between breakfast and lunch, while the remaining half consumed a daily amount of specially-manufactured, HF chocolate (Williams et al., 2009). Many factors like the creation of free radicals and inflammatory mediators contribute to sunburns and could be effectively counteracted by the ability of cocoa bean flavanols to reduce or even eliminate the skin’s inflammation (Williams et al., 2009 ). After the 12-day testing period the participants given the cocoa-bean product with high flavanol levels experienced such a significant measurable increase in the protective ability of their skin that the authors could indeed claim, “regular consumption of a chocolate rich in flavanols confers substantial photoprotection and can thus be effective at protecting human skin from harmful UV effects” (Williams et al., 2009, p. 171). This gives scientific proof that the right kind of chocolate should not be considered detrimental to one’s health. Reference Williams, S., Tamburic, S...

...Although scientists and doctors consider air pollution worst than smoking to cause lung cancer, industries around the world dispense tonnes of pollution in the atmosphere every year. As a result of the industrialization, earlier industrialized countries like China and India are one of the most polluted countries of the world. Also, fossil fuel burning from cars and household heating dispense high levels of toxic gases in the atmosphere. Air pollution is an arduous problem to be solved because it is a world problem, but there are others causes for cancer that can be avoided. One cause that can be avoided is excessive sun exposure that increase the person's chance of skin cancer because of the high concentration of UV rays. The UV rays cause sunburn that damages the skin cells, and repetitive damages may lead to skin cancer later in life. However, people around the world work with intense sun exposure or go to beaches and pools several times without using any sun protection like sunscreen lotion and a hat. The UV rays act stronger in white skin than dark skin because dark skin has a natural protection for these rays. Consequently, people who have white skin have higher chance of...

...Every summer you will see tons of people run to the beach to get a tan. The reason for this is because a tan can make you appear more attractive because it can make your muscle lines more defined. A pale look can make you look unhealthy or even sick. Even though many people sun bathe, is it a good idea? This article will be about the benefits of an indoor tanning lotion. You will also read about a few tips on how to best keep yourself safe when trying to get a tan. Hopefully by the end of this article, you will be better informed about tanning in general. Let's first look at how tanning naturally works. The process of tanning is similar to how you toast your bread. If you sit in the sun long enough, it will "cook" your skin. Of course you don't feel the pain because you are doing it so gradually but some people will if they stay out in the sun for way too long. This is called getting a sun burn and it can be quite painful. Although getting a tan can look great, is it really safe? Studies have shown that long exposure to the sun's UV rays can lead you to develop skin cancer. Is it really worth risking your life to look darker? As long as you know what you are doing, you can greatly decrease the chances of that happening. Things like wearing plenty of sunscreen and limiting your time in the sun can help out tremendously. But let's now look at an alternative way to get a tan. What many people do instead of baking in the sun all day is use those indoor tanning lotions and bake on...

...Travis Weaver English 112 June 1st, 2012 Primary Research Essay Lake Wylie is located on Gaston and Mecklenburg Counties in North Carolina and York County in South Carolina. The lakes water supply primarily comes from the Catawba River. The lake is man-made and used to create hydroelectricity by Duke Power Company. Lake Wylie is a large lake and offers an abundance of space for recreation and activities including: boating, fishing, water skiing, sun bathing, swimming and numerous other activities around the lake. It is enjoyed by many people during the summer time. Safety on the water becomes a problem with so many people participating in water activities. Several People die and many others are injured each year in association with the lake. The first thing that comes to mind when being around water is being able to swim. Many people die each year while being on the lake because they cannot swim or not very strong swimmers. Some people think its not cool to wear a life jacket so they jump into the lake without wearing one. They can swim for a short while but they become exhausted and are not close enough to grab on to anything and they struggle to keep their head above the water. Other children were never taught how to swim at all and they think they will be fine hugging onto a float or noodle but they can lose their grip and down they go. The water is dark and by the time someone notices it is to late. The lake water itself is a safety concern. There have been reports...

...My parents have always told me that I was the kind of boy who would question everything, from why salt melts snow to why sunburn hurts. I suppose that is why I have always gravitated toward science and math in and out of school; it answers the “whys” of the universe and beyond--salts elevate the boiling point of water when mixed with it in a solution, and UV radiation from the sun causes an inflammatory response in skin. To me, science is an ongoing journey of discovery. Theories are disproven all the time, but every day new facts are learned that allow me to make more tangible connections to the world around me. On the other hand, I think of advanced mathematics as an ever-growing jigsaw puzzle. Though some of my peers would disagree, I find...

...PLANTS AVOID SUNBURN In chapter 5, we learned about one of the most important roles in plants, which is photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some microorganisms harness solar energy and convert it into chemical energy, this is done through pigments in plant cells. These pigments have distinct colors because some absorb more wavelengths then others. For example, carotenoids, these accessoery pigments reflect longer wavelengths of light, making them appear red, orange,or yellow. Carotenoids perform two major functions in the process of photosynthesis. One purpose is to serve as excessory light pigment and the other purpose to serve is to protect the pigments from the photo distructive reaction of oxygen. There was a couple articles breaking down this process. I found a popular article published July 19, 2006 that has no author but the source was Arizona State University. This same institution offered a scientific article written by Iris Visoly-Fisher, Kayvon Daie, Yuichi Terazono, Christian Herrero, Fernando Fango Luis Oterom Edgardo Durantini, Juana J. Silber, Leonides Sereno, Devens Gust, Thomas A. Moore, Ana L. Moore, and Stuart M. Lindsay published in June 6, 2006. This article was most likely written for scientists or college grads majoring In the field because it was more into depth and was pubished on www.pnas.org[->0]. While the popular article is mostly intended for high school or junior high students as its published on pysc.org[->1]...
