Oh the Humanity
Darwin once said that those who could best survive in the environment around them would influence the next generation of a given species. Nowhere in this idea did he talk about external forces acting on populations that change the survivability of a species. Darwin was well aware of the food chain, but he never discussed how human elitism could affect the food chain. As a result of mass production, human ignorance towards other forms of life proves their elitism. Humans believe that they are the top of the food chain, and therefore, they value their own life far above any other life. They have a biological elitism. With their biological elitism, humans begin developing a superiority complex, which, in result lends them to believe they are a step above “top of the food chain”. Finally, humans can get pleasure from watching the destruction of other life because the destruction reassures humans of their superiority complex. Although each has a unique setting, Super Sad True Love Story, “The People Pound”, and Heathers are all connected in their inherent values of life, each providing a satirical approach to biological elitism and proving the sadism of humanity.
Biological elitism starts with the devaluing of other, inferior life forms, which leads to the construction of a biological dictatorship. In Hunter Breckonridge’s story, “The People Pound”, she satirizes the lack of value humans place on animals by paralleling animals with disabled humans, calling disabled humans “duds”. In her story, Gertrude is a middle-aged woman who received brain damage at her job. She is the first “dud” of many seen in the story. The term “dud”, is inherently condescending. It implies a lack of social value in the object. Breckonridge’s writes, “…she probably can’t think anymore. She’s just a dud” (Breck 2). Therefore, anything that cannot think is a “dud”. Although animals have survival intuition, they aren’t thought as having thoughts. Hence, “duds” in the story are just like animals. Breckonridge forces a realization that animals are too far devalued by putting human “duds” in the place of animals. In the film, Heathers, Veronica says, “All we want is to be treated like human beings, not to be experimented on like guinea pigs or patronized like bunny rabbits”. To which, her father responds, “I don’t patronize bunny rabbits”. The humor in this statement pulls away from its importance. Veronica is clearly stating that she wants to be treated like something more than an animal. Her need to be valued is based on social construction of her high school. The high school values those who are more popular, therefore, leaving Veronica to feel like a bunny rabbit. In the end, after being devalued by her school, Veronica’s leads herself to be “dictator” of the school. In comparison, Martha, in Breckonridge’s short story, see’s the hierarchy that humans rein over the “duds” as she goes from a carnival setting to a pound and to an arena. In each of these stop, Martha reveals the dehumanization and patronization of duds as they are placed in the position of animals.
Biological Elitism continues into further hierarchy as humans attempt to portray even greater value, reaching for value in the supernatural. In the novel, Super Sad True Love Story, the ultimate goal of the protagonist, Lenny, is to have infinite life. Indefinite youth is the goal in having eternal life. Obviously this task is unrealistic but biological elitism pushes a need for supernatural capabilities. Lenny states, “My youth has passed, but the wisdom of age hardly beckons. Why is it so hard to be a grown-up in this world?” (Super 26). Lenny lives in a world where youth is the only was to stay “human”. Youth is the only way to have value, and Lenny needs value to be human. Therefore, the desire to have eternal life is a desire to feel biologically elite. Lenny does not find enough value from his wisdom and credit, hence, he seeks to regain his youth in order to be elite. Similarly, J.D., in the film, Heathers, attempts to make up for his lack of social value by becoming supernatural. In the film, J.D. attempts to become Satan by twisting the morality of high school students. J.D. says, “People will look at the ashes of Westerburg and say, "Now there's a school that self-destructed, not because society didn't care, but because the school was society." Now that's deep”. J.D. is saying that the school lies as it’s own realm of society. The fact that he wants it to self-destruct is out of his Satanic desires. J.D. wants to control society, because he thinks the school represents society. The reason behind his ambition is the lack of value he has in the school. The school forces him into a state of reestablishing his biological elitism, which is fulfilled by his self-perception as Satan. Although J.D. and Lenny are opposite in their ambitions, Lenny wanting life and J.D. wanting death, their desire to be supernatural is at the cause of a starving biological elitism. To compensate for each of their lack of social value, they turn to the supernatural for worth.
Humans become sadistic with their elitism when they recognize the power they have over others. Because of his lack of youth and therefore his lack of societal value, Lenny represents an animal in the biological hierarchy. In the novel, his girlfriend, Eunice, abuses his lack of value. Her elitism has proceeded to sadism. She tells Lenny, “…if you come home and the delivery comes, can you please make sure the milk is antibiotic-free not just fat-free this time and that they didn’t forget the Lavazza Qualita Oro Expresso. Then put the veal and the whole branzino in the fridge and set the white peaches out on the countertop...don’t forget to put the fish and veal in the fridge, Lenny! And if you’re going to do the dishes please wipe down the countertop. You always leave water all over the place…Have a good day, nerd-face” (Super 117). Eunice treats Lenny like a slave, whipping his around everywhere. But she also gets pleasure from enslaving him. The tag at the end of her message “nerd-face” make it seem as if Eunice enjoys putting Lenny to work. She gets pleasure from his pain. She is able to be a sadist around Lenny because of the hierarchy of their relationship. Lenny has less value than Eunice simply because he has less youth than her. Eunice is biologically elite. Eunice’s sadistic desires spurred from her dad. Her dad treated her sadistically; therefore, Eunice wishes to feel valuable by treating others sadistically. Similarly, in Hunter Breckonridge’s story, humans are more obviously sadistic towards the duds. The narrator describes an arena for the duds, “In the center ring, the duds are being prodded around and men in hats are bidding on them” (Breck 6). The men watching in the arena are the biological elitists. Their sadistic nature towards “duds” proves their desire for elitism. Similar to the men in the arena and Eunice, J.D. is a sadist. J.D. is a more blunt, physical interpretation of a sadist, but he is a sadist nonetheless. His sadism spurs from his desire to be supernatural, but it proves his biological elitism. J.D., Eunice, and the men in the arena are all sadists due to the biological elitism the wish to prove.
In each Heathers, Super Sad True Love Story, and “The People Pound” biological elitism is deconstructed and exposed through use of satire. by revealing levels of this elitism, the authors and director have exposed sadism ingrained in the elitism. The sadism in elitism developed from a power struggle between human and other life. Humans begin elitism by stripping value from other life. Next, they seek to improve their worth by reaching to supernatural ambitions. Finally, they end elitism in sadism, putting no worth on other life. Biological elitism has and will ultimately lead to destruction of other species.

Super Sad True Love Story

...Super Sad True Love Story, America, next to of course god america i, and I, Too, Sing America, are all story/poems that in some form or another address the theme of American exceptionalism and patriotism. In each of the titles, it is established that America is not as revered as it once was or possibly could be and that change needs to take place. Through dystopian tales, satirical speeches and exaggerated ideals the authors of these works of literature try to identify the issues faced in American society. Super Sad True Love story is a novel set in a futuristic world that portrays America as a dystopia. The conditions of the country are horrible; the dollar is extremely unstable, literacy has gone down the drain, privacy is virtually nonexistent and social networking has reached unthinkable extremes. Through these mediums Shteyngart reveals that patriotism is no longer about being proud but rather about surviving. Throughout the novel the state of the United States keeps deteriorating and none of the characters realize how bad it is. Lenny in the novel still holds love for America and hopes against all odds that it once again becomes a country to be admired as is seen in the lines below. “I took out my U.S. passport and held it in my hand, fingering its embossed golden eagle, still hoping it meant something. I remember how my parents would talk about the luck of their having left the Soviet Union for America. Oh God, I thought, let there still be such luck in this new world”...

Super Sad True Love Story By Gary Shteyngart

...keys in your pocket so you can go home. But you are still sitting on that park bench, processing the situation and wondering what to do. You don’t have back up and you won’t be able to arrange the money to buy another phone and laptop until the end of the week. How are you feeling right now? More importantly, do you think you can make it to the end of the week? Increasing technological dependence is one of the central themes in Super Sad True Love Story and Shteyngart discusses this by introducing a device called an “äppärät”, that is arguably one of the central characters of the novel. Through this paper I wish to highlight how people in Shteyngart’s future are excessively reliant on technology, why I think that happens and what affect that has on society. In my opinion, the digital revolution is causing a change in human behaviors, experiences and thought processes. I believe that these changes are not necessarily for the better and have a negative effect on personality development. Super Sad True Love Story by Gary Shteyngart is an unlikely love-story between...

A Study in Scarlet and Pink

...A Study in Scarlet and Pink A successful adaption of a text does not have to follow the text exactly as written. There is an importance to maintaining the main concepts and characters in the story, such as in the mystery, A Study in Scarlet by Conan Doyle. The main characters, Dr. John Watson and Sherlock Holmes should be portrayed correctly; the type of crime, and the search for the criminal should remain the same. There is a higher importance for an adaption to have more excitement and interesting twist, makes a more successful mystery than the original text. Any movie or show should have the effect of people having a connection. The effects have being so embedded to the film that the audience feels a part of the mystery. In movies and shows, there are basic needs for a good director, good actors or actresses, and a good setting like any other normal movie to make a successful adaption.   In the short story, A Study in Scarlet by Sir Conan Doyle, the mystery has almost linear storyline with an episode of flashback. The story is in first narrative person, through the eyes of Dr. Watson. It first talks about Dr. John Watson in Afghanistan war as an army doctor. He gets shot in the shoulder. He is discharged from the war efforts, returning to London. In London, he meets his friend Stamford who shows him to his acquaintance, Sherlock Holmes.  They then become roommates and solve mysteries together. For the first mystery, they receive details of an unsolved murder of Mr. Enoch...

The Monkey Who Loved Chocolate

...This is a story about a very unusual boy, and an even more unusual monkey. The boy was out of the ordinary as boys go, because he didn’t like chocolate. No, not at all. Not even one little bit. And I must say, I’ve never met a boy like that. Not in my entire life. And the monkey was unusual because he absolutely adored chocolate – this particular monkey went absolutely bananas for it – and as you may guess – very few monkeys are mad about chocolate, if only because, they’ve never even tasted it. The boy was called Jim. And the monkey was called Theodore, or Theo for short. One day, Jim’s Aunty Judith took him to the zoo. Jim’s mother had told her that Jim didn’t like chocolate, but she didn’t believe that. “Poor little thing,” she said to herself. “His mum won’t buy him chocolate because she’s too mean. But I’ll buy him a nice lovely bar and give it to him while we are out.” And that’s what she did. Only it was true. Jim really didn’t like chocolate. “Oh thanks Aunty Judith,” he said when she gave it to him. “That’s really kind of you. I’ll just save it for later, if you don’t mind.” But he did like seeing all the animals in the zoo. The prowling bears weren’t at all cuddly – but they were super cool all the same. The giraffes had lovely soft noses. The snakes in the snake house made Jim’s blood run cold – but he liked being scared really – just a bit. And the monkeys – well everyone loves monkeys. They looked silly but intelligent all at the same time. And in particular...

After taking this class, I realized that I resonate with modern humanism and epicureanism the most out of all of them. I am a big lover and believe that people should be treated with respect along with being loved and cared for. I also believe that, in the epicureanism part, I take good care of myself and never let myself suffer. I take it easy on my mind and am always able to realize that I am only human and I should never overwork myself to the point of suffering or stress. I resonate with the need for three things: friends we see often, freedom and money, and self-examined life (Detrick 17). The World of Big Brother

...The World of Big Brother By: Nasreen Khaliq Nineteen Eighty-Four is a film directed by Michael Radford. It was released in 1984 and is a movie adaptation of the dystopian novel of the same name by George Orwell. It stars John Hurt as Winston Smith, Suzanna Hamilton as Julia, Richard Burton as O’Brien, Cyril Cusack as Charrington, Gregor Fisher as Parsons, and James Walker as Syme. It is a film about the super power Oceania, which is one of the three states in the world, and how everything in the citizens’ lives, from work to thought and emotion, is either supressed or controlled by the totalitarian government. History is constantly edited and rewritten, and eradication of the English language is seen as a wonderful thing and is encouraged to make way for a new language called “Newspeak”, which consists of worlds like “thoughtcrime” and “crimestop”. The film deals with the main character Winston Smith, and his life living under the watchful eyes of “Big Brother”. Directors face quite a daunting task when creating a film based on a novel. It is always hard to find the perfect actors who not only fit the part of the characters, but can also portray them in a realistic way. In between reading the characters in the novel, and watching them later on in the film, it is evident that the characters have suffered many alterations. In Nineteen Eighty-Four, one character that has managed to evade change is O’Brien. In the novel he is described as a very intelligent and powerful man who...

An Old Woman

...A sonnet of fourteen lines divided between three quatrains and an ending couplet, "To India My Native Land" is a song of love and deep emotion from Henry Louis Vivian Derozio to his "fallen country," India. The poem was published before Derozio's untimely death at the age of twenty-two from cholera in 1831. The abab abcc dede ff rhyme scheme employed by Derozio is most clearly identifiable as a variation of Edmund Spenser's Amoretti rhyme scheme. In Derozio's, there is Spenserian concatenation (rhyme and meaning linkage) at the cc couplet in the second quatrain. It is at this couplet that the poetic speaker hits the crescendo of his song and reveals the emotional motivation behind the story he tells and behind the resolution he will promise. In an apostrophe addressing India, the poetic persona, who is tightly associated with Derozio himself, recounts India's "days of glory past" when glory, reverence, and deity were like a "beauteous halo circled round thy brow." These four short lines of iambic pentameter paint a vivid picture of the India that existed before British colonization. They also reveal the deep emotional ties the persona has to the memory of the true India, the free India, the India that commanded respect from other civilizations.  The address to India continues in the second quatrain, but line 5 turns the topic from glory to misery. India's fallen estate under colonization is lamented and compared to a subdued eagle whose wings are chained, which renders...

Reading Readiness vs Emergent Literacy

...The most unforgettable moment in my life is the day when my pet dog died. Being just a young innocent boy, I really never understood the meaning of death or the purpose of it. All I could understand is that it comes uninvited unexpectedly and it is inevitable, for all life will come to an end one day. The tragic moment happened when I took my pet dog out for a walk. It was when we reached an intersection and was crossing a pedestrian line when a car turning left immediately rushed to turn after I passed him and all of sudden a loud cry came from my dog. As I look behind me, I saw my dog got run over by the car which did not stopped at all and just drove off. I was there standing, looking and waited for my dog to get up and run around just like he always does, even though blood are gushing out of his mouth and eyes. Tears started to pour out like a waterfall as I carried him to the side of the road. The smell was nauseating and the sticky feeling of the blood on my hand, yet I could not stop holding him as he takes his last remaining breath with agony. I don’t know if it’s because of my tears or the smell of the blood that makes everything around me seems so dull and dark with his emotionless and motionless body in my tiny arms as I rushed home. To know that just a few hours ago he was whining and giving me the puppy eyes so I could take him to walk but now all of that is over as my dad and I buried him in our yard. I thought of all the good time we had together. He was adorable...

Media and Its Responsibilities

...character of a person (Mosser, 2010, p.1.7). The contemporary theory that will be discussed is emotivism, which is basing one’s moral decisions on one’s feelings and emotions (Mosser, 2010, p.1.8). Concluding, I will discuss which theory is closer to my own personal view and why I chose that particular theory. While freedom of speech and personal connection are very important, age appropriate moral standards should be upheld in the media because media plays a significant role in suicide, bullying, and self-worth. According to Mosser (2010), virtue ethics seeks to find “not what makes an act good but what makes a person virtuous” (p.1.7). Indeed, a virtuous person has and shows high moral standards. So if media plays the role of a super peer in multiple realms, shouldn’t media also exemplify these same high moral standards? Healthy balances with proper limits need to be enforced with mass media and society. One way to do this...

Many of them “appear to have lost sight of the reality and the effect their behavior will have on their lives and the lives of others once their unethical behavior is publically exposed,” (Washington, 1). With scandals involving sex, money and sometimes even drugs and committing crimes, we would never think that they would be the ones committing them. Kurt Vonnegut Literary Research Paper

...of Short Works by Kurt Vonnegut. Welcome to the Monkey House: A Collection of Short Works consists of 25 short stories most of which had previously appeared in magazines such as The Atlantic Monthly, Ladies Home Journal, Fantasy and Science Fiction Magazine, Collier’s Magazine, Saturday Evening Post, The New York Times, Esquire, Venture, and Cosmopolitan. The title story appeared in Playboy magazine the same year the collection was released. Eleven of the stories were reprinted from Vonnegut’s 1961 short story collection Canary in a Cat House (Vonnegut). This paper will focus on four futuristic science fiction stories from the collection. These stories, “Welcome to the Monkey House”, “Harrison Bergeron”, “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”, and “Unready to Wear” all share a dystopian science fiction theme. Science and technology are supposed to make the world a better place, but instead, Vonnegut concludes they only create a new set of problems (Farrell, “Science and Technology in the Works of Kurt Vonnegut”). Television is often a target of satire in much of his fiction from the 1950’s. He describes it as desensitizing and numbing while deceiving the masses (Werlock). Vonnegut uses satire and pessimism throughout these dystopian stories. Satire is a special form of literature that seeks to uncover ridiculous ideas and customs in a society (Mowery). Each story portrays a totalitarian government that proposes an irrational solution to genuine problems. Vonnegut uses dystopian...
