First-line supervisory training is a very important one, as often they are put or promoted into these positions without being fully or even partially trained as to what their duties involve. They are responsible for ‘getting the job done’, by instructing and leading those they manage “maintaining the standards of the department, and creating and maintaining cooperation with employees” (Hamann, n.d, para.1). A supervisor of this type also has to know how to deal with conflict management. They also have the responsibility of “ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, initiating appropriate discipline when necessary, mentoring officers under their command, and serving as the communication link between management and line officers” (IACP, …show more content…
In the case study of Sergeant Rick, it was clearly stated that he “didn’t know was the expectations of officers were on how he was to supervise them and what expectations his boss, the lieutenant, had for him as a supervisor” (Stojkovic,Kalinich & Klofas,2015,p. 242). This became an issue when a situation came up with Officer Johnson who wanted extra day off for son’s baseball game. Sergeant Rick explained about favoritism and how it would look to other officers if it seems that he showed it, and offered him suggestions for an alternative of getting someone to swap a day. Officer Johnson could not make that happen so he called in sick.
