12 DOMAINS OF CULTURE: SUSTENANCE AND HEALTH

1. America! Home of the Chicago style hot dog, the Philly cheesesteak, Wisconsin cheese curds and some good ole fashion American bacon! I know what you’re thinking right now; sounds good, doesn’t it? Well, the fact of the matter is that none of these foods are good for you. So, why am I talking about these foods? Sustenance and Health in America have been key topics in culture for many years. Many people are still finding it hard to lead long, healthy lives. What can people do to achieve these goals? The answer is relatively simple actually; improve your overall health and the quality of the food you consume. I’d like to talk to you about just that; overall wellness and food and drink consumption.
2. Wellness in America has been overlooked by many people for many years now. Wellness is defined as the quality or state of being healthy in body and mind.1 It’s also an approach to healthcare that emphasizes preventing illness and prolonging life, as opposed to emphasizing treating diseases.1 That’s right! Wellness isn’t just about eating healthy and exercising, it’s also about preventing sickness and living a healthy life without relying on prescribed medications for unhealthy symptoms. The idea behind this concept is that most illnesses can be cured by being healthy versus the use of medications. According to James Strohecker, a pioneer in e-health and president of HealthWorld Online, America’s wellness culture has two faces. One that focuses on health through medication and the other that focuses on health through healthy living.2 Does one attempt to get healthy by taking endless amounts of medication, or by living a healthy lifestyle? Personally, I choose to live a healthy lifestyle! One way to do this is to consume foods and drinks that are healthy and nutritious for you.
