Four Techniques of Quentin Tarantino

...The Four Key Elements on Tarantino Films Quentin Tarantino has revolutionized the film industry. From his first directorial debut of Reservoir Dogs (1991) to his latest film Django Unchained (2012) he has presented the audience with unique techniques to intrigue and capture their desires for more. I regard Tarantino as the William Shakespeare of our time, because of the development and passion for his imagination and ambiguous style. Jim Smith wrote of Quentin Tarantino, as well as his films, so to have a better understanding as to whom Tarantino is as a person and director/writer. Smith titled his book “Tarantino”. The book states Tarantino has four key techniques in which most of the films are based on. These techniques are: the usage of the dramatic dialogue in the film; the very long, slow scenes exploiting, explaining, and foreshadowing the characters; the sudden dramatic reversal of tones; and the anti-chronological structure that transcends the audience’s limit of thought. Film directors edit their work to maintain only significant scenes to be revealed, thus most dialogues are cut in order to achieve such goals. Tarantino does otherwise. Dialogue is one key element in his films. Through dialogue, Tarantino manages to convey certain elements that are crucial to the existence of each character. For almost the first ten minutes in Reservoir Dogs, the development of each character is raised through the use of Dialogue. The characters discuss many comical issues which...

Ftv Autuer Essay: Tarantino and Lee

...It's a seemingly simple task that is often left by the wayside, half finished and ineffective. Those directors that do achieve this task, tend to make better movies. Two such directors are Ang Lee and Quentin Tarantino. The ways that they manipulate their audience's emotions are completely different yet they are both effective. Where Tarantino's manipulation of tension is unmatched in the modern world, Lee's grace and subtlety often leaves audience's with a sense of awe and wonder. The manipulation of an audience's emotions is often a difficult task but Lee and Tarantino achieve it in their own unique ways. Suspense, defined by the Oxford dictionary, is a state or feeling of excited or anxious uncertainty about what may happen. Quentin Tarantino's manipulation of suspense and tension in a scene is unmatched in today's world. Like the former "Master of Suspense" himself, Alfred Hitchcock, Quentin Tarantino leads the audience to a the point of near exhaustion, through the pent up pressure in his trademark lengthy scenes. These scenes serve to focus every ounce of mental and emotional energy on the situation, instead of cutting away to an inter-related subplot elsewhere and releasing the pressure, as is conventional. In the film "Inglourious Basterds" (2009), Tarantino leaves the audience gasping for breath right from the opening scene. The scene, in which a German "Jew Hunter" is questioning a farmer about the Jews hiding on his farm, is built up over nearly twenty minutes...

Quentin Tarantino and His American Dream

...Essay on Quentin Tarantino & His American Dream Quentin Tarantino exemplifies the American Dream because he has achieved and maintained material success through his passion of directing, writing, and acting in films. Many people desire to live the American Dream. This involves gaining and maintaining of material success through ones passion. Quentin Tarantino exemplifies the American Dream because he has achieved and maintained material success through his passion of directing, writing, and acting in films. Quentin Tarantino had an unusual childhood. He was born in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1963 to Tony and Connie Tarantino. Their marriage was just for Connie to get away from her family and they divorced before Quentin was born (Wild 3). After the divorce his mother took him to California when he was two years old, here he grew up in the Southbay area (Wild 3). Quentin frequented the movies and his mom exposed him to many films, many of which were restricted (Dawson 19). In school Quentin was recognized as very bright, he scored over 150 on IQ tests, yet he hated school ("Tarantino, Quentin" 559). As a result of his hatred of school, he soon became a truant and his mother decided it would be better for him not to go and she know where he is, rather than he not go and her not know where he was, so she allowed him to drop out when he was sixteen years old and still in the ninth grade (Dawson 22). Still a child, Tarantino entered the work force. After Quentin dropped out of...

What Make a Great Fiction

...isn’t as simple as it sounds. There are many styles and approaches authors and directors can take to keep the story from being too bland and uninteresting. In The Norton Anthology of Short Fiction it says that in order to write good fiction, the writer must take a more complex approach in portraying the story to the reader and the story must be original. A writer and director that has mastered these two things is the notorious director, Quentin Tarantino. A great example of how significant narrative structure is Quentin Tarantino’s use of nonlinear storylines. Nonlinear storylines can be seen in Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs, and Kill Bill. These movies seem to start in the beginning and play through without any suspicion to reader of it starting somewhere other than the beginning of the plot. As the movie progresses there are specific details that are missing that leave the viewer confused. The movie is displayed in a series of chapters that seem unrelated. Just when it seems like it couldn’t get any more confusing, Tarantino ties everything up masterfully to clear out any confusion in his final scenes. The way he does this enables him to be such a talented, unique writer and director. He takes an Cromer 2 unusual approached to his story that allows them to appeal to the audience than the average movie. In Quentin...

Anaylsis

...Analysis of Pulp Fiction Pulp Fiction is a movie that seems to have multiple stories being told almost simultaneously. Some will say it is about two hit men or a boxer, but the truth is there is no story behind the film. The whole purpose of the film is to parody every type of film movement created. This film leaves no movement out. The director, Quentin Tarantino, uses the film’s formal properties to express larger themes. First of all, Quentin Tarantino somewhat sticks to the classic Hollywood System for editing. Tarantino does not seem to cross the axis of action. However, there are times when the director breaks with the classic Hollywood System for editing and one way he does this is by having a discontinuous editing system. One example is the end of the movie. Under the rule of continuity editing, it should have been following the beginning of the film. The director, however, did not seem to use crosscutting, which could have worked in his film and makes him adhere to the continuity editing system. Among all the other styles present in the film, film noir and surrealism seem to be the most obvious. Throughout the movie, Tarantino parodies these films styles along with many others. Film noir is one of the most noticeable styles in the movie. First of all, one important aspect of film noir is the fact that each character has no clear moral base. This is very true in Pulp Fiction, especially with Samuel L. Jackson’s character, Jules. In the beginning, Jules kills a group of people...

Analyzing Tarantino's Use Of Scene Cuts In Film

...In the cinema scene as Shosanna’s projectionist, Marcel, lights the film rolls with his cigarette which causes the entire theatre to go up in flames. This is when Tarantino begins to use scene cuts. Tarantino does this to display a change in tempo happening within the scene. Prior to this moment occurring, the tempo was slow, while the audience was waiting for the procedures of both Shosanna and the Inglourious Basterds to go down. Immediately after the vengeance begins in the scene, the tempo quickly goes from a slow pace to a quick pace. This automatic quick pace is used to show the panic that was put on the Nazi party. Another important use of the numerous scene cuts is to capture the chaos that is occurring overall. In a concluding portion...

Insight of a Spaghetti Western Through the Eyes of a Girl

...genre traditionally is a western fare, but the Spanish settings are very distinctive” (Hughes, 2004). The distinctive traditional settings in Inglourious Basterds include: decaying old houses, desecrated bodies, and a lawless land. Also, “magnificent scenery, action sequences, and stirring music that leads to extreme graphic violence” (Hughes, 2004).This sequence of events is intertwined within this film, and keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Further, “the good, the bad, and the ugly” (Interview, 2009), meaning consequently, in the film there are both good and bad characters, but the seemingly good characters are not so perfect. Inglourious Basterds sets a perfect precedence for the satire of a spaghetti western. Nevertheless, Tarantino puts his own unique spin on a spaghetti western through the film Inglorious Basterds. The film is starring Brad Pitt as a commanding officer of a bush whacking, gorilla, Nazi-scalping squad of Jewish American soldiers, known as “The Basterds”. Furthermore, The Basterds invade Nazi-occupied France during World War II, scalping and killing any Nazi’s that the squad comes across. Meanwhile, a young Jewish girl escapes with her life as she watched her family get gunned down by Nazi soldiers. In the long run, the young girl takes a flaming revenge on the Nazi’s who killed her family. Django Unchained

...Guns, shooting, killing, and more killing, are expectations in a Western. However, Django Unchained is not all that ordinary. Yes, of course, there are men with hats and horses riding into the sunset and let's not forget the occasional explosion with the badass departure, but this movie incorporates multiple genres making it more diverse. Quentin Tarantino's strange style of producing dramatic, action packed, and bizarre pieces grasps the audience. With the combination of violence, a captivating plot, an unfamiliar script, a thrilling soundtrack, and exceptional characters and actors Tarantino is able interpret his version of a blend of slavery, heroism, and comedy without flaw. "Django, have you always been alone?"  The movie begins, an introduction so raw and unbearable to watch. There are men chained to each other by the foot; they are slaves...

Reservoir Dogs & Pulp Fiction: Life’s Parodies

...ENG 201 - 20420 30 April 2015 CE - 2 Reservoir Dogs & Pulp Fiction: Life’s Parodies In the film Reservoir Dogs, Joe Cabot organizes the group that will participate in a diamond robbery. No one in the crew knows each other’s name. Since that is his intention, Cabot gives them codenames from a color chart. He names them Mr. Orange, Mr. Pink, Mr. White, Mr. Blue, Mr. Purple, and Mr. Brown. It is odd to Cabot that the gentleman referred to as Mr. Pink disliked his codename. The name is just a code that will help the crew identify each other so no one expects him to start arguing about the name. Mr. Pink represents the outcasts of this society. Every time he argues in the movie, everyone is quick to counter him. That is like today’s feminists, civil rights activists, and the differences between politicians, anyone who is against society’s “norms” is subject to criticism. An expectation for a group of criminals is the fact that they can handle the pressure that comes with the crime. Yet, in this film, the group is made up of bluffers. They act desperately in almost every situation they find themselves in. For instance, when they found out someone was double crossing the, they all become panicky and start pointing their guns at each other. Another example is when Mr. Orange gets shot, he panics and pleads with Mr. White to take him to the hospital. This film teaches the audience that if one gives guns to an individual that has childlike characteristics, someone will...

Fight Club and Reservoir Dogs

...get Thomas Bonds English 201 Nov. 20, 2013 Fight Club and Reservoir Dogs Fight Club and Reservoir Dogs portray similar themes. The primary characters in both films are disconnected from themselves and therefore have trouble functioning in their own lives. These characters also have differing beliefs on the nature of their own realities and are disconnected from them. Similarly, David Fincher and Quinton Tarantino use thematic and stylistic devices to disconnect the viewer from the reality of the films’ narratives. In Reservoir Dogs, the characters are disconnected from themselves; they do not even have names. Instead, they are each assigned a color and are referred to by their colleagues as Mr. Orange, Mr. Pink, Mr. White, Mr. Brown, etc. The men are selected to do a job for a criminal organization that involves stealing precious jewels. What makes this organization so odd, however, is the fact that none of the men selected are allowed to use their real names. The head of the organization, Joe, assigns these color names to the criminals, creating an air of disconnect, as neither the characters in the film nor the viewers know their true identities. This removal of identity not only creates disconnection among the characters, but also causes disconnection in the characters’ own selves, negatively effecting their ability to be the “professionals” that they so often pride themselves on being. This adverse affect on their lives ultimately causes the deaths of each character...
