...Brace Jovanovich, Inc. in 1949. 1984 is a political novel written with the purpose of warning readers in the West of the dangers of totalitarian government. In 1949, the Cold War had not yet escalated, and many Americans supported communism as possible political systems for the west. Therefore, Orwell wrote his novel in order to expose the cruelty and oppression of communist countries. In his dystopian nation, Orwell gave a sneak peak of what a country could become if the people gave all the power to the government. In 1984, Orwell portrays the perfect totalitarian society in which the government monitors and controls every aspect of human life to the extent that having a disloyal thought is against the law. They do so with the use of technology such as tele screens and microphones across the city which allowed the government to monitor all the citizens almost all of the times. In order to keep the citizens of London loyal and obedient to the government, they use psychological manipulation designed to overwhelm the minds capacity for independent thought. Every citizen has a giant tele screen which not only monitors their behavior, but also feed citizens with positive propaganda of the government which makes them believe their government is successful in every way. "WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY,...

...PESTLE analysis PESTLE ANALYSIS Summary South Korea has been politically stable since becoming a democratic state. However, its relationship with North Korea continues to present a strong challenge. South Korea fell into a brief financial crisis in 1997 due to structural weakness in the banking sector, however strong economic and financial reforms quickly countered the downturn and put the country back on a growth path by the following year. With the opening up of markets after the financial crisis in 1997, the country became one of the largest technology markets in the world. As far as social issues are concerned, the country has low population growth and fertility rates, leading to an ageing population. Furthermore, the country has a highly qualified labor force, which makes it possible to both produce and commercialize advanced technologies. The country is also well equipped with extensive broadband network and telecommunication facilities. Legal procedures in the country are time consuming and complex, which makes it very difficult for foreign investors. The environmental scenario of the country is characterized by the breach of emission standards, which is reaching unreasonable limits in spite of its relatively small area and population in comparison to other countries. ...TOKYO (AP) — The United States and Japan opened the door Sunday to new nuclear talks with North Korea if the saber-rattling country lowered tensions and honored past agreements, even as it rejected South Korea's latest offer of dialogue as a "crafty trick." U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told reporters in Tokyo that North Korea would find "ready partners" in the United States if it began abandoning its nuclear program. Japan's foreign minister, Fumio Kishida, also demanded a resolution to a dispute concerning Japanese citizens abducted decades ago by North Korean officials. The diplomats seemed to point the way for a possible revival of the six-nation talks that have been suspended for four years. China long pushed has for the process to resume without conditions. But the U.S. and allies South Korea and Japan fear rewarding North Korea for its belligerence and the endless repetition of a cycle of tensions and failed talks that have prolonged the crisis. Kerry's message of openness to diplomacy was clear, however unlikely the chances appeared that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's government would meet the American's conditions. "I'm not going to be so stuck in the mud that an opportunity to actually get something done is flagrantly wasted because of a kind of predetermined stubbornness," he told U.S.-based journalists. "You have to keep your mind open. But fundamentally, the concept is they're going to have to show some kind of good faith here so...

...Russia and North Korea have declared 2015, the year of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II as “Friendship Year”. Since last year, Russia and North Korea have increasingly improved their ties with each other. The growing ties and relationship between the countries has got the world thinking about the intentions of their alliance. More recently, North Korea’s Kim Jong Un has confirmed his visit to Russia. This will be the leader’s first visit to anywhere since taking on the position of North Korea’s leader after the death of his father, Kim Jong-il. Russian President Vladimir Putin has been facing a lot of heat from the United Nations recently because of their military operations in Ukraine. North Korea was sanctioned by the United Nations because of their nuclear test programs in 2006 and since then, the relationships had been worsening, with the States again charging North Korea’s Kim Jong Un of heinous crimes against its own population and more. Both Russia and North Korea have been left in isolation and it seems that both the countries were in need of a remarkable alliance. The countries have announced that they will deepen economic and political ties starting from this year; their ‘year of friendship’ (McCurry). An official North Korean news agency said that the countries would “develop bilateral relations on to a new higher stage in various fields including politics, economy and culture under a mutual agreement”. Another question in the minds of the people...

...Bringing Western Culture to South Korea via Nursing Home, Plastic Surgery, Clothing and Makeup Jacob Schwarz Executive Summary My reason for writing this study is to determine the feasibility of building a nursing/retirement home, a plastic surgery outpatient center, and a cosmetic and clothing store in Seoul, South Korea. In my opinion, South Korea is welcoming to this venture; this can be seen in the upcoming research. In this report, I explore the geography of Seoul, South Korea. I learn of the growing, large, population and the population density of 45,000 people per square mile (“Population Statistics,” 2013). Next, I review the demographics and find out that minority groups consist of 2.2% of the population (Population Statistics, 2013). While reviewing the demographics I found that the education system is extremely strict; though it is more lenient now, it is still success driven (Chakrabarti, 2013). I also found that religion is not going to be an issue with this venture, in my opinion. There are two major religions; the major Christian religion will be implemented in the venture (Koo, n.d.). Education and demographics are important to a global business venture, though I believe the economy is most important. I present information about South Korea’s economy, and how it has transformed from an aid recipient to a donor country (Globalization, n.d.). Here is where I mention the chaebol’s success, which accounted for 55.7% of South Koreas GDP in 2010 (Globalization, n...

The Hwasong-15 is the newly developed ICBM of North Korea believed to have the capabilities of delivering nuclear bomb on US soil. This could be an indication that North Korea it targeted goal of nuclear production. According to some expert, Kim Jung Un is optimistic that the Hwasong -15 will be a retaliation against any aggression from the US and her allies in the region. Despite United nations and US sanctions and trade restrictions been placed on North Korea, the Kim Jung Un regime remains...

...occurred that required negotiation between countries. North Korea announced they were withdrawing from the nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT). Upon making this announcement, they also stated they do not intend on producing nuclear weapons. This information was revealed from the official North Korean News Agency, NKNA. When this was announced, it raised red flags around the world. Even though North Korea declared the withdrawal immediate, according to Article X, countries must give a three month notice before withdrawal. North Korea made the decision to withdraw from the NPT is based on Bush’s 2003 State of the Union Address, when he declared North Korea to be part of the ‘axis of evil’ along with Iran and Iraq (Global Issues, 2006). Since the United States were preparing to invade Iraq, they felt they needed to create a credible deterrent in case they were next. The non-proliferation treaty was developed to convince countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Germany, Japan, South Africa, South Korea, and North Korea to be non-nuclear countries. The treaty was enforced in 1970 and provided the framework needed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons. A decade before in 1993, North Korea threatened to withdraw from the NPT. There were several bilateral negotiations that took place resulting in North Korea retracting their statements just a few days before the withdrawal became effective. Since North Korea was no longer an official member of the treaty,...

...North Korea. One of the most seclusive —yet one of the most controversial— countries in the world. Controlled by dictators from the Kim family since the end of the Korean War in 1953, the country is led today by Kim Jong-un with ruthless expectations. Notorious for its labor camps, draconian punishments, public executions, and a myriad of other human rights violations, the international community has called for increased sanctions and restrictive trade in efforts to curtail these crimes and stifle the regime. However, North Korea has easily bypassed this by deploying a tactic of their own: sending forced laborers abroad to harvest cold currency for the dictatorship. Furthermore, in the past five years, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea’s...

...In 2000 alone, 70 countries, consisting of two-thirds of the world’s population were subject to United States imposed sanctions (Van den Berg, 228). Currently the U.S. has sanctions imposed on countries such as Burma, North Korea and Cuba. The Cuban sanctions date back to the 1960’s. Sanctions can be imposed by one or several countries and come in a variety of shapes and sizes. This paper will examine trade and economic sanctions, the effectiveness of sanctions, as well as evaluate the sanctions the United States has imposed upon Iraq, Cuba, and North Korea. Trade sanctions, according to International Economics A Heterodox Approach, are trade restrictions imposed by a country in order to punish or persuade another country to change objectionable policies or behavior. Sanctions can be imposed either unilaterally or by a group of countries, or an organization such as the League of Nations, or the World Trade Organization. Trade sanctions can range from mild, selectively concentrating on a certain aspect of the economy, to extreme, targeting a countries entire economy (Barber 368). Trade sanctions can be used when military action is considered too extreme, but diplomatic protest is too meager. Trade sanctions are not without cost, but they are much less costly than other alternatives. A “sender” country imposes a sanction on another country to restrict its imports and exports, or to impede the country’s finances. The discomfort from a trade sanction is usually felt by the target...

...Hello everyone, I would like to talk to you about the humanitarian crisis in North Korea. Kim Jong Il imposes a totalitarian rule over the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea or the D.P.R.K. for short. The DPRK is what north Korean’s refer to when mentioning their country. This is ironic because they are far from being democratic and they have absolutely no say in their government elections. The Kim family has ruled for generations and wins one hundred percent of the time because North Korea does not allow any political opposition. The people are isolated and are completely cut off from the outside world. According to a North Korean world article, North Koreans practice collective punishment. This means that if you go against Kim Jong Il in any way, not only will you get in trouble but the rest of your entire family will be punished. There is evidence about the political prisons that say death rates are extremely high. Grandchildren to grandparents have been sent to prison camps. Guards who have defected have reported being specifically told by Kim Jong Il that the prisoners are not people and should be treated as such. They are never meant to be released and their history is erased as soon as they enter. Although North Korea denies any of these camps exist. This is a humanitarian crisis and there is evidence that they are committing crimes against humanity. Kim Jong Il and his government should be held accountable. We CANNOT sit back and allow this to go on. Satellite imagery...
