Tell Me Narrative

“Did I do something?” I questioned my mom in a shaky voice.
I was six. I was sitting there on a dark red ripped up booth at El Collado, one of my favorite restaurants when I was little. It’s nasty now.
“What do you mean? Why even ask me that?” She answered so fast I didn’t even have a comeback like any other time.
“You only bring me to a place I enjoy eating all the time when you have to tell me something,” I continued, looking at her with a serious face.
Little ole me was trying to read her mind; it was never going to work. She was looking at me with this sad look on her face, at 7 years old it isn’t that hard to tell when your parents are upset. What is wrong? That’s all I kept saying to myself.
“Is the food good?” She just keeps staring …show more content…
They have millions of different personalities. They all come with faces and I’m still learning. I have ever seen that face before.
“Your father will be living in another place..” She said it so fast I didn’t even understand what it was she was saying.
“What? Wait what?” So confused. This was so confusing. “When he is coming back? How long is he going to be away?” I had questions and more questions.
“I don’t think it would be a good idea if he came back.”
“WHAT! Why would you say that? Where is he? Why is he leaving me?” My head was spinning. I had no feeling in my body. My stomach was curling up; I could no longer eat the food I ate.
“He’s not leaving you babygirl; you will still see him. Me and daddy just are not compatible.” She using big words as if I knew the meaning, so I looked at her with a confused look. “Meaning we are getting a divorce.” The word divorce sunk into my head like oil goes into your skin; goes on yet it could wash away.”
My world came crashing down, in that moment all I thought was this is because of me. I don’t why, but for years that’s what I thought it was. Then the truth came out and the my world tumbled down into pieces. I could see the volcano erupt; in that moment I couldn’t focus on the words coming out her mouth. I was alone and

Personal Awareness Paper

...and be the light that directs me down the path I am meant to be on. God has put me on this Earth for a reason and has as plan for me. It is up to myself to figure out the plan God has planned for me and it is important for me to know that God will be with me through it all no matter the circumstance. In order for me to discover my divine design, I first must understand myself as well as my strengths and weakness in terms of interaction with people, the way I learn, the way I make my decisions and how I deal with the world around me. Right now God is asking me to be the best person possible. He brought me to Southeastern for a reason and I am still trying to figure out that exact reason but it feels right being here. I love to be around my close friends and listen to what they have to say and then give them advice about life and the things going on around them. I am an extroverted person so I am not very shy. I believe that in the future God’s plan for me is to be around a group of young adults, maybe young kids or high school aged (young adults). I love to interact with people and I get my energy from others so being around a young group of young people would be perfect for me, kind of like a small group that gathers once a week and just talks about life. God has given me multiple spiritual gifts, but one that I really like is always bringing a positive and happy vibe to a group of people, normally my friends. Whenever people are around me we are always smiling and having...

Once a Virgin

...Tell me why, Burnham ivyjaneredsapon The ambiance implicitly covers the longing for a precious treasure shivering in the heart of a mystique person. When I was young, I always let my soul travel in the exotic beauty of my beloved country. It made me perspired when I first laid my eyes to the popular city of Baguio, the Summer Capital of the Philippines, in just a picture of the notebook that I used to see. I wished of stepping my innocent feet unto the rare land that was sought after. I wished of gasping the air and of tasting… the life it may gave as I savored the moment. These wishes, I guess, was a strong proof why I was very much overwhelmed upon seeking the opportunity of going to it. Indeed, the happiness and excitement that kept me alive could not find a place, for sure. This awaited advent lasted for more than seven hours, as the trip passed from places that I considered as a gateway to heaven. First was the city of Santiago. It did not change yet. The beauty of the remarkable spots such as the well – established buildings still thrill me. On contrast, as the wheel ran ahead, the bare faces of the street children never change the thought of mine that this city is not yet a perfect place to praise. Next was one of the precious marks of my ingenious province – Cordon. Upon laying my eyes to the soothing and relaxing farm of it, I swear of coming back in Isabela for I was a lucky person who lived with the heart of it. The feeling arose when the van stopped at a gasoline...

Personal Narrative: Tell Me About Yourself

...Tell me about yourself. Since middle school, up to now, I have been involved in sports, such as volleyball, basketball, and softball. Being a part of a team taught me to represent and work hard for something bigger than myself. It also taught me to manage my time better. I’m a more responsible person because of it. How would your teachers describe you? They would describe me as punctual, reliable, and responsible, but not involved a lot during class in discussions. I don’t involve myself in discussions a lot because I try to listen to others views, before I speak on my own views. Why should I hire you over the other eight students waiting to be interviewed? I’m reliable and hardworking. I’m also willing to learn. I am the type of person to...

...Estrella Alvarado Period 2 11/26/12 APLAC: HORACE ESSAY The Roman poet named Horace uses a quote that is very inspiring in a way that in times of struggle something that is least expected in us comes alive. Depending on the situation, adversity will take place and for the long run develop a person’s character. Sometimes people are put in certain situations that are hard to handle and usually a certain skill/ talent will be released without them even noticing because they need that extra boost in their life. One day someone may be in danger or oneself may be in danger, the adrenaline rush you have at the moment will make you stronger and you’ll be able to defend yourself in any circumstances. Your instincts will kick in and your reactions will be faster and more precise. One day a mother left her child unattended by a park and the child decided to leave and cross the road because his ball had rolled off. A truck was coming his way but he had no idea and his mom saw this from afar and sprinted to save him. The fact that her only child was in danger made her instincts come out. Another example would be if you’re facing a death in a family you’ll have to take out strength from somewhere to be able to console the rest of your family and always be there for them. This time of misfortune calls for strength and you’re giving it although it may be hurting you as well. I believe that this makes you stronger if in the future times something similar happens and you have to go through...

Persuasive Speech Reflection

...I had the topic for this speech chosen since the second or third week of class. Public radio is such a big part of my life and the life of my family that I knew it would be something that I could write passionately about. When I started to prepare this speech, I initially had a hard time finding sources. I was focusing on Chicago Public Media as a whole and that was only bringing up one or two hits other than Chicago Public Media’s website. After struggling through that for a few days, I realized that what I really wanted to emphasize was Chicago Public Radio so I searched for that instead. Thankfully I came up with several sources and I built my paper upon those. I knew that Chicago Public Radio had a fantastic program line-up and that I could use that as the basis for my argument. People love to be entertained. And most people think that Chicago Public Radio is just old people news – all stale and boring. I knew that I had a prime opportunity to expose everyone in class to the diversity that is Chicago Public Radio. I initially struggled with how to organize my speech without it just becoming one big “send your money to WBEZ” talk. I wanted clear reasons so I chose to focus on three main ideas: News, Entertainment and Community. They are the three big focuses of Chicago Public Radio and WBEZ so I knew that I would find tons of information to back those up. When I started looking at all of the different news programs that are aired, I was amazed at how...

As I approached the front office, my father did not look so happy, then he said, “Look at your report card and tell me what you see. “Before I could get a word out i was grounded just like that.            A few days had gone by and my weekend was dead. The night before school I called my friends to set up a meeting at lunch. It was 12:45pm that is the time for lunch. My friends and I were walking to the table that we sit at every day .They knew that something was wrong with me because I did not talk or eat my food. As lunch was about to be over I had spoken like a ghost coming out of nowhere I said,” I have something very important to tell you and if you don’t like it than we can no longer be friends.” All of them gathered around me like a pack of dogs eating food. I said, “The grades that I have now is not acceptable, so in that case I will not be going out to the movies or the mall any time soon, so I’m saying this in a nice way if you cannot support in my decisions than are friendship is over.” From that day on I realized that I had amazing friends that have my back and they will support me in...

Readers Theatre Performances

...theatre, chamber theatre, ethnography, and personal narrative. Each of these possess assets that are interesting to me. Readers theatre is a style of theatre where actors do or do not memorize their lines. The actors use vocal demonstration to tell the story rather than props or sets. It is also known as interpretative theatre because the performer interprets the story in his or her own way and so does the audience. Chamber theatre is similar to readers theatre in that both of them use minimal amounts of props and sets. Instead chamber theatre use the work’s original text and the performer again interprets the work the way that he or she best sees it. Ethnography is a form of performance that conducts research. The performer transform the stage from a place of performance to a place of participatory action. It uses the stage as place for inquiry about one’s own values and views. Personal Narrative is when the the performer uses a personal essay to tell a story. This way the performer knows the story well and can tell it in an interesting and entertaining manner. Although these forms of performance are all interesting and fun, I would prefer to perform a personal narrative. I prefer personal narrative because I would be familiar with the story and could portray it in the best way possible to the audience so they can get the most out of watching my performance. Also, by doing a personal narrative it would be easier for me to tell the story and take away some of my nervousness...

Water Lilie-Personal Narrative

...It is clear that throughout this trip, that lasted a mere three and a half months, we have experienced a great deal of narratives. These have ranged from incredibly uplifting to deeply solemn. These stories have shaped the people, places, and history that we have learned about, and continue to shape the people who encounter them today. Some of these narratives are extremely hard to express, verging on the border of the inexpressible. However, there lies an importance in being bale to articulate certain memories and experiences to pass them on to the ones who did not have the privilege of experiencing them. These experiences have shaped me beyond belief, and I hope to express how these varied experiences have changed me for the better. One...

Critical Evaluation of the Representation of Speech and Thought in Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never and Kanye West’s Can’t Tell Me Nothing.

...In this essay I will analyse the representation of speech in Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never and thought in Kanye West’s Can’t Tell Me Nothing using approaches developed by G.N. Leech, M.H. Short and S. Rimmon-Kenan. I will use the aspects of Leech and Short’s essay ‘Speech and Thought Presentation’ that I consider to be constructive and compensate the shortcomings of their essay with the improvements – in my view – made in Rimmon-Kenan’s essay. Also, since Rimmon-Kenan’s essay ‘Narration: speech representation’ does not include an account of thought representation, I will convert his distinctions of speech representation. Thus “diegetic summary” (DS) will be “diegetic thought summary” (DTS); “Summary, less ‘purely’ diegetic” will be “Thought Summary, purely diegetic” (TS); “Indirect content paraphrase”(ICP) will be “Indirect thought content paraphrase” (ITC); “Indirect discourse, mimetic to some degree”(ID) will be “ Indirect thought, mimetic to some degree” (IT): “Free indirect discourse” (FID) will be “Free indirect thought” (FIT); “Direct discourse” (DD) will Be “Direct thought” (DT) and “Free direct discourse”(FDD) will be “Free Direct thought” (FDT). ITC, FIT, DT and FDT correspond with Leech and Short’s distinctions (in definition and symbol, except for ITC which correspond with their IT). I will give examples of DTS, TS and ITS: DTS: The bare report of a thought, without any specification of how the thinker felt or the language the thinker used to think. E.g.,...

Compare and Contrast

...Amanda Church Compare and contrast draft Professor Elizabeth Parks English 121 May 19, 2014 I. Introduction- The Narrative, “This Old House: The Heart is a Lonely Menagerie” leaves more to the readers imagination than the Descriptive essay, “Once More to the Lake”. II. First Difference: Specific word usage and paragraphs A. The narrative has dialogue and uses action to get the reader’s attention. The paragraphs can be short even one word, depending on if the writer is showing a conversation between two or more people. For example in the Narrative, “This Old House: The Heart is a Lonely Menagerie”, David has multiple conversations with people throughout the essay giving you an idea of what is actually taking place and helping to put you into the situation. B. Descriptive essays normally have longer paragraphs which include a lot of detail. These types of essays also require carefully chosen words so that the reader can visualize what the writer is intending to say. For example in “Once More to the Lake” He makes it a point to tell you every detail you could possibly imagine about the lake. III. Second Difference: The Structure of the essay A. A narrative should have a plot, setting and characters. It should also cover all important events. In the Narrative the plot is about how David wants the little things in life to be of importance and not have to worry about all the hub bub of showing off your belongings. He wants to relax and lead a simple life...

Following are some tools to help you structure your personal narrative, breaking it down into parts. The “Hook” Start your paper with a statement about your story that catches the reader’s attention, for example: a relevant quotation, question, fact, or definition. Introduction Set the Scene Provide the information the reader will need to understand the story: Who are the major characters? When and where is it taking place? Is it a story about something that happened to you, the writer, or is it fiction? Thesis Statement The thesis of a narrative essay plays a slightly different role than that of an argument or expository essay. A narrative thesis can begin the events of the story: “It was sunny and warm out when I started down the path”; offer a moral or lesson learned: “I’ll never hike alone again”; or identify a theme that connects the story to a universal experience: “Journeys bring both joy and hardship.” “Show, Don’t Tell” Good story telling includes details and descriptions that help the reader understand what the writer experienced. Think about using all five senses—not just the sense of sight—to add details about what you heard, saw, and felt during the event. For example, “My heart jumped as the dark ...

Descriptive vs Narrative Essaya

...Descriptive vs. Narrative Essays Camille Hall English 121 Instructor James Welch March 17, 2013 Descriptive vs. Narrative Essays Descriptive essays are much more detailed and expressive than narrative essays and are more apt to hold the reader’s attention by ejecting more emotion. The narrative essay uses detail to advance the story, while the descriptive uses to detail to describe an unfamiliar subject. The ability to describe something convincingly is always important to both the writer and their audience. Both descriptive and narrative essays use detail but for different purposes. In this essay I will compare and contrast two essays; “I Want A Wife” and “Caged Bird” in order to give insight into each type of essay. The aim of a narrative essay is to describe a course of events from a subjective point, is usually told in chronological order, and is usually written in first person. Narrative essays are used to tell a story in a way so that the reader learns a lesson or gains insight, much of this is done through lots of detail about the subject that is being written about. The best narrative essays are those inducing images in the reader’s minds about what's happening by using concrete, specific verbs and nouns rather than a lot of adverbs and adjectives. To write a narrative essay you will need to tell a story (usually about something that has happened to you) or it could be fiction. The purpose is for your reader to learn a lesson or gain insight of...
