Possible results
Students construct a dichotomous key to classify pasta.
Suggested answers
1 It contains questions that divide objects into two groups.
2 It is possible that every student produced a different key, even if they had the same items to classify.
3 May depend on whether the keys work. Compare some to see which are better and why.

4.2 Practical activities
Prac 1: Characteristics of life
Common mistakes
Students may confuse the top side of the leaf with the bottom side of a leaf. A demonstration beforehand may be helpful.
Possible results
The most shrivelled leaf has petroleum jelly covering its top side as this is where the least amount of stomata are present.
Suggested answers
1 The water came from the leaves through tiny pores (stomata) on the undersides of the leaves.
2 Cellular respiration.
3 The most shrivelled leaf had petroleum jelly covering its top side. The leaf that retained its shape the most was totally covered with petroleum jelly.
4 The bottom side of the leaf.
5 All rocks will retain their shape, as rocks do not possess stomata so there would be no water loss.

Prac 2: Mustard seeds
Common mistakes
As nature will have it, not all seeds sprout. Make sure there are a few extra seeds to compensate for the seeds that don’t sprout.
Possible results
The seedlings that were grown in dark conditions are shorter and less upright than the seeds kept in light conditions.
Suggested answers
1 Diagrammatic answer depends on the student’s results.
2 Seedlings will start to grow regardless of whether there is light, but light is required if growth is to continue after initial sprouting has occurred.

Best Teacher

...Mrs Brawner is the most electrified teacher anyone could possibly have. She always made sure to make sure that we the students understood the lesson no matter what it was. Any time you had a question she made sure she gave you an answer. When ever someone or I was being bullied she would always be there for you and make things right. She always went beyond the ordinary as a teacher which makes her the best. Also Mrs. Brawer is one of the most funniest people I have ever met. For example, she would be in the middle of teaching and a few kids would be talking loudly out in the hallway walking past the classroom and she would go and let them know that she has a class and she is trying to teach. Or if someone was talking in the middle of class and when she would have to tell them time after time to stop, she would look at them dead in the eye and say “out in the hall” and the way she said it would just make you want to laugh all day. Or when someone wouldn’t raise their hand to ask her a question she would say louder than them “Any Questions” and would put on the biggest smile on her face I have ever seen. Or when she would almost trip over someone’s back pack she would look at that person and say “Move your book bag before I fall over it.” Mrs Brawner has influenced my life in so many ways that I never new were possible. All that I can say is THANK YOU Mrs. Brawner for having a positive effect on my life. Sincerely, Chris Carnahan East Chambers High...

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

...the Novel, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,” by Sherman Alexei, the two characters I choose was Junior and Rowdy. Junior was a poor cartoonist drawer growing up in Spokane Indian reservation. Junior and Rowdy lived in a town name Rez. While, Rowdy was Junior’s strong best friend. Rowdy protected Junior when he got bullied. When Junior transferred to different school in Reardan, Rowdy started hating Junior for that so they became enemies from best friend. I think these two were the funniest guys in the novel because they did some crazy things together. This novel made me feel different emotions such as laugh, worried and sad. The novel made me laugh because Junior was a funny guy. Junior made funny cartoons, and also used funny quotes in the book such as, ‘I was born with water on the brain.” This quote was the first sentence of the novel. The novel also made me worried when Junior went all white people school. He didn’t know anyone there and especially there were no Indians there. I thought he was going to get beat up by white people but I don’t think that happened. I think he punched a white guy on the face. The novel also made me sad because Junior’s grandma, his dad’s best friend and his sister died in terrible accidents. This was the tragic part of the book and especially for Junior. The three events that I think are important to novel are when Junior has a basketball game versus Rowdy and his old school, he got pushed and was taken to the hospital...
