...As we enter a cemetery, a feeling of fear might take over our bodies. We may think of sad times and ended lives. What is a scary and dreadful place is a very meaningful place for me. Cemeteries are special to me for the reason that my grandfather and grandmother are both buried there. Cemeteries are necessary to bringing perspective and serenity to one’s soul, because they bring us a connection to where we came from, help us realize the delicacy of life, and they help us to relax a little bit through their quiet and calmness. Old Fellows Cemetery is a historic, 3-acre cemetery which contains many different, interesting qualities and examples of how time changes everything. In addition to the name and dates of birth and death, many tombstones are also engraved with epitaphs. Epitaphs are one of the...

...Nestled within suburban London is a picturesque necropolis housing the graves of both the famous and the forgotten. Spanning over 12 acres and containing thousands of graves, Highgate Cemetery is perhaps most popular for its celebrity residents, such as philosopher Karl Marx and novelist Douglas Adams. The cemetery has wormed its way into pop culture with rumors that the recently deceased George Michael will be buried there alongside his mother. However, the park itself boasts a rich history, and has been a striking piece of London for nearly two centuries. Highgate Cemetery’s overgrown flora, beautiful graves, and thriving wildlife makes it a breathtaking destination for anyone interested in rethinking their relationship with death. London in the 19th century was a minefield of dead cholera patients and plague victims. After a population boom in the early 1800’s, an already corpse-ridden London faced a dilemma: more living residents means more dead bodies. As a result, “Graveyards and burial grounds were crammed in between shops, houses and taverns — wherever there was space.” (“History,” Highgate Cemetery) Eventually, the stench became so unbearable and the health risks became so great that Parliament...

...Danielle Norman Professor Smith AMH 2020 01T 01, December 2015 Lagrange Cemetery In Titusville, Florida there is a small white church on Old Dixie Road. Old, decaying graves surround this picturesque church. While it certainly has a haunted feel to it, the cemetery also has a certain beauty. It’s old and falling apart in places, but there is so much history to be found in the headstones. From the founders of the town of Titusville to everyday people who just happen to call this place their eternal resting place. An early community, Lagrange’s founders can be found among the headstones. The church first started all the way back in 1869 and is the oldest church from New Smyrna Beach to Key West. It’s also the oldest church from St. Augustine to Key West ("The Historical Lagrange Church"). The Lagrange church was a protestant church. This community was usually mostly surrounded by water then, and there were little other people in this area besides a few Native Americans ("The Historical Lagrange Church")....

...Brooklyn’s city of the dead, Green Wood Cemetery, is also grand public park where many go not just to mourn the dead but also to enjoy the natural landscape. This cemetery was established in 1838 by urban planner Henry Evelyn Pierrport. David Douglass was the designer of the cemetery. It is important to note the development of the landscape architect profession, here the design of a park was done by an engineer. It was during this era that picturesque parks and gardens began to be introduced into the public sphere. The picturesque of this location was carefully created by Douglass who used the lands natural moraine driven hills, valleys, and ponds long with the integration of sinuous pathways and trees. This project was one of Douglass’s most...

...public oversight of the corporate and business activities which in their pursuit of profits will not hesitate to desecrate the tombs, rebury corps, let alone sell something that is not their own. To cut the long story short, Galilee is one of the many cemeteries in Tennessee, and it would have remained unknown and unpopular if not for the recent scandal. The owner of the cemetery, Jemar Lambert chose to make some extra cash and thus used the cemetery beyond its current capacity for which he is now charged with theft of property and abuse of a corpse. Jemar sold many of the pre-need plots and ended up selling more than the cemetery could currently hold. Therefore, he chose to ultimately bury corpses outside the cemetery, on the lands that did not belong to him. Furthermore, after finding out that some graves were too old and unattended, and he expected that no relatives would ever know, he dumped multiple bodies in the same graves, apparently freeing up some space that can be resold, but without proper permission to do so(Jacobson, 2014). From the publicly available information one finds out that the state ordered Galilee to stop operations in 2011, yet the cemetery continued to operate till 2014 in a usual manner....

(Abridged) In March 1999, John Lacey and the management team at the Loewen Group, Inc., had to decide what course of action to take in light of the company's imminent financial difñculties. On January 22,1999, Lacey, a renowned turnaround specialist, was appointed chairman of Loewen, the second largest death care company in North America. Headquartered in Burnaby, British Columbia, Loewen owned over 1,100 funeral homes and more than 400 cemeteries in the U.S. and Canadá; it also owned 32 funeral homes in the United Kingdom. The company had come a long way since its modest beginnings in Canadá, where Ray Loewen, the founder (and, until recently, chairman and CEO), started out helpinghis father run the family funeral business in the late 1950s. During the last two decades, Loewen Group had grown explosively, mainly by acquiring small independent funeral homes and cemeteries in densely populated urban markets; in recent years the company had also acquired several large established funeral chains. Over the last five years alone, Consolidated revenues had grown by nearly 30 percent a year, on average, from $303 million to over $1.1 billion. Despite its impressive growth, the company faced a major financial crisis. It lost $599 million for 1998, compared to earning $43 million the previous year. Loewen's on-going acquisitions program had been aggressively ñnanced with debt. At year-end 1998...

...Bloodline- CrimeLove/Family Relations Jamal Rowe. Golden rays of sunshine peeped through the cracks in the musty apartment’s windows; Mother Nature’s early morning alarm clock. Disgruntled, he got up out of his battered leather couch and headed for the old-motel-esque bathroom. A quick flick of the light switch revealed his reflection staring back at him in the dirty bathroom mirror. His hair was the opposite of the regular. His black locks were ragged. Blue eyes stared back at him as he examine himself. Below his arrow-like nose was a 5 o’clock shadow shave with stubs. He looked like the end product of a 3 night hangover after spring break. Ignoring his appearance, he headed into the shower and soon emerged looking 5 years younger. Throwing on his clothes and pocket up his gun and NYPD badge, he emerged into the early morning bustle of New York City. After consuming his usual coffee and donut ‘Breakfast’ he hailed a taxi and after a few minutes he was at the New York Police Department. “Jack Talbott!” and a warm smile and handshake came from Police Chief Ezra Collig. Jack acknowledged him and was shown to the chief’s office. “Come here boy, it’s really important, hell, it’s dire business, dangerous to say the least.” Said chief Collig woefully. The look on Jack’s face could show that he was intrigued about it. “We have 4 cases that we believe might be linked to the same person” Said Chief Collig, “Four murders all executed the same; legs and arms bound, throat slashed...

...construction for a housing development, Windover Pond in Florida is one of the world’s greatest archaeological finds (The Brevard Museum). Located near Titusville in Brevard County, Windover Pond is an ancient, shallow bog pond that was a burial ground for more than 200 Native Americans who lived in the area about 8,000 years ago. (The Brevard Museum). Radiocarbon dating tests indicated the oldest skeletons were buried 8,100 years ago, and the youngest was placed in the ground 6,900 years ago, 3,000 to 4,000 years before the Egyptian pyramids (Suriano, Robert). Windover dates an advanced culture in North America that precedes any previously discovered anywhere else in the world (Suriano, Robert) and the burial site is a planned community cemetery (Nielson, Paula J.). Most significant of the discoveries at Windover Pond are the cloth fragments, the oldest cloth ever found in the Western hemisphere (Suriano, Robert). The cloth was made from the leaves of sabal palm, and the pieces reveal five different methods of fabric making, although no evidence of a loom was found (Suriano, Robert). Some of the fabrics are woven as tightly as a cotton T-shirt, and others are made more loosely twined into blankets, capes, and toga-like garments (Suriano, Robert). A total of ninety-one brains have been recovered from the site, the first time that intact human brains had been preserved, and these brains hold what would seem to be the oldest group of human DNA ever found anywhere in the world...

...DEALING WITH POWER OF THE GRAVE "Power of the grave must die" The grave is a terrible place. It is a place where glorious lives and destinies are buried on a perpetual note. A place where virtues and riches are forgotten. Many glorious children, born to manifest glory in life were slaughtered and buried before the day of their glory could come. I decree into your life, ANY POWER ASSIGNED TO SLAUGHTER YOUR DESTINY SHALL REPLACE YOU IN THE GRAVE IN THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS. The grave is a pathetic place, you don't belong there neither does your destiny. When the power of the grave is in operation in your life, enemies no longer worry their head concerning you, they know that the real thing that should make you somebody has been buried. No matter how beautiful a lady may be, if her husband has been buried she can never get married, barrenness is inevitable if the womb of a woman has been buried, she can never conceive. Enemies don't care about the grade you got from the university, if your certificate is buried, a master degree holder can never get any good employment... If the fingernail of a man is buried in the grave, his hand can never prosper. If the hair is buried, his glory is gone. If they bury an image with your name written on it, then you're a walking dead, the real you is not here but beneath the ground level so you are restricted to attain greatness in life... God says in Ezekiel 37:12 " I will open up your graves, and cause you to come up out of your graves...

...Joshua Berman Professor Wenxin English 102 3 March 2015 Foreshadowing To Tell A Story Many authors illustrate a literary technique called foreshadowing. Foreshadowing is a device that author’s uses to hint at what is about to come. In Flannery O’Connor’s “A Good Man Is Hard To Find,” The author uses foreshadowing through certain symbols to hint what is to come in the story. Some examples of foreshadowing in this story are the dress and the graves. In each of these examples of foreshadowing, the author try’s to convey what is to come. The first example of foreshadowing used is the grandmother’s dress. She was wearing a “Navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of violets on the brim and a navy blue dress with a small white dot in the print. And her collars and cuffs were white organdy trimmed with lace and at her neckline she had pinned a purple spray of cloth violets containing a sachet” (O’Connor 428). The strong use of imagery tells the reader that she is dressed in her Sunday best. Many times when a person is buried they are dressed in their best outfit. The way she is dressed almost symbolizes what one would wear to be buried in. This is a very strong point of foreshadowing because the grandmother seems to be in her most prominent and best looking outfit. Possibly symbolizing her funeral may be upcoming. Another example of foreshadowing is the number of graves in the plantation numbering 5 or 6 (O’Connor 428). This is a strong point of foreshadowing because...

The only downside was that the hotel was right next to a cemetery but it wasn’t any cemetery it was the Wolfside cemetery. The word about the Wolfside cemetery was that every year on the 15th of October there was a pack of wolves that would come and dig up some of the graves.
