They have played an important role for centuries in Europe, even dating back to the Roman Empire (Beets, 2011). However, American corporations were built in an independent society that grew autonomously, with few limits. As a result, this type of stakeholder that supports or owns American corporations has a much different point of view than a stakeholder that is dependent on the government. With approval of the Roman emperor, groups of individuals could form a collegium for business purposes. Much like corporations today, the collegium had the ability to hold property and continue to exist beyond those who established it. Corporations progressed on through the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries in Europe. Four types of organizations were the most common: towns, guilds, religious communities, and universities (Beets, 2011).
