...is important in order for a corporation to be successful. While the leader of an organization is an important role, a leader has to have followers to lead. This paper will look at what followership is defined as. It will also explore some of the demands on the effective follower and why effective followers are a critical resource for a leader. Followership One of the most important roles in an organization is followership. However, followership would not exist without trust and leadership. A leader is defined as one who “influences relationships among leaders and followers and who intend real changes and outcomes that reflect their shared purposes” (Daft, 2008). The two positions are entwined. Followers can shape a leaders behavior just like a leader can develop good followers. These roles are proactive and can work together to achieve the vision of the organization. In a time, not too long ago, followership meant to do as you were told and be quiet about it. Followers kept their heads down and did their job and did not ask questions. Recently, an employer’s expectations has changed for followers, and leaders are asking more from their subordinates than before. Everyone is or has been a follower at some time in their life. Even leaders have to have a followership role. For example, a supervisor on a production line has followers reporting to him/her. They in turn have to report to their leader. Followership should be looked at as a role in life and not a position...

...and Moral Leadership). Martin Luther King, Jr. was the mirror image of a moral and courageous leader. Dr. King upheld his morality principles as well as set examples for his followers. Dr. King had special virtues in which he lived and they was love, courage, hope amongst others. " Love, courage, hope, non conformity, and impatience were embodied in the sit-ins, boycotts, and marches, in which King himself was often a participant" (Rice 2004). Dr. King wanted his followers to be just and kind and to not use oppression as a crutch. Despite being spit on, sprayed with a hose and verbally assaulted he was able to manage frustration and anger and continue his peaceful rally. Dr. King was not one to hold his tongue especially about issues concerning his people. In one instance researchers say " King lamented Negroes' lack of "initiative," lambasted blacks for spending above their means, and expressed no patience with blacks who had "used their oppression as an excuse for mediocrity" (Rice 2004). King was well disciplined and courageous in his efforts. He spoke courage through to his followers to keep them encourage and give them strength. He believed “courage does not entail indifference to danger any more than it entails an absence of fear. To be courageous, in this view, is to persevere even in the presence of fear and danger" (Rice 2004). He gave his followers hope followed by love even at the testiest of times. That is courage in itself. He provided hope...

...obtain maximum satisfaction. As a matter of a fact many people choose their perspective leader by appearance, however it is their fault. Some people have a misconception that only those people who are physically strong can become good leaders, but this is not the fact. A leader may not be physically strong but he needs to be mentally strong and firm in decisions. For example, Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation was the greatest leader but he was active and had a firm desire to serve the Nation. He had the power of organizing and uniting people and attracting people towards him by his speeches. This is the best quality of a leader which he had in him. We can also say that, a person who can satisfy the basic psychological needs of his followers can also be an effective leader....

...Beowulf Beowulf is the universal story of life’s journey from adolescence to adulthood and to old age. The hero grows in wisdom about himself and about the world through the pain and triumph of personal experience. Throughout the story, Beowulf is portrayed as the hero of Hrothgar’s people for saving them from Grendel, the monster. Beowulf changes as he advances from adolescence to adulthood to old age; he matures through heroism and courage. As Beowulf becomes older, you can see the maturity that grows inside of him through his acts of heroism. Grendel is the monster that went to Herot (mead hall) and slaughtered many of Hrothgar’s men while they were sleeping by smashing their bodies and devouring them for dinner. Beowulf, who is a follower of Higlac and is the strongest of the Geats, heard about Grendel and decided to take action himself, so he rounded up a few men and “ended the grief, sorrow, [and] suffering forced on Hrothgar’s helpless people” (Raffel, page 55). Beowulf showed heroism as he crossed the sea that led him to Herot to go save these people of Hrothgar, from this savage. He was portrayed as a hero in their eyes because he ended this tragedy with such strength and courage. As Beowulf pretended to sleep, Grendel “clutched at [him] with his claws, and was instantly seized himself, claws bent back as Beowulf leaned up on one arm” and Grendel was sure that he had never met a man so strong that his mind quickly filled with fear and terror (Raffel, page 52). Heroism...

...the leadership approaches that Brad has identified are universal and are congruent with the academic literature on leadership. The study of leadership approaches has been an important part of the literature on organizational behavior and management. Leadership receives more interest than any other role in many organizations (Schwandt &Marquardt, 2000, p.15). Leadership concepts have been studied for a long time dating back to Plato and Caesar times (Bass, 1981, p. 28). Although there is a lack of harmony about the exact definition of leadership, a literature review shows that there is an agreement that leadership is a relationship of influence between the leader and the followers. There are shared purposes, and the leader realizes those goals through continuous motivation and inspiration of the followers. Analysis of the historical evolvement of the academic study of leadership corresponds with most of Brad’s style of leadership. Brad asserts that...

...The book Revolutionary Mothers “women in the struggle for America’s independence” by Carol Berkin speaks about the history behind woman during America’s independence. In chapter four Carol Berkin describes the woman who followed the army. Women marched with their children if they had any and carried pots and pans. Many women joined the army with their children, because of poverty, fear of starvation,...

...humanity. • Leadership is a trait that can be learned and enhanced with experience, however it is not something that can be just given, otherwise it will lead to failure. Leadership is a talent, like playing the piano, it takes time to cultivate leadership to become effective at inspiring others, much like it takes time for a pianist to be able to stroke the keys perfectly to Mozart’s Requiem. • “Putting a man in charge and calling him a leader is like giving a man a Bible and calling him a preacher. Bestowing the title, doesn't bestow the talent.” - Price Pritchett How would you define a leader? • Leaders have an ability to influence their followers with confidence through effective communication. • Leaders are teachers that set the path and challenge others to do so. • Leaders are stewards of their followers, and take risks on behalf of the followers (often seen as courage). ...both works demonstrate non-existentialist lives. They rely on each other, allow their behavior to alter based on other people and acknowledge that they are letting other people control their lives. In No Exit by Sartre, many characters display non-existentialist characteristics. To begin, Garcin does not leave the room when the door finally opens. Rather than decide for himself that he is not a coward, he begs Estelle to tell him that he is courageous. Without Estelle’s guidance, Garcin worries about his existence. To ensure that she actually exists, Estelle is in need of a materialistic object, a mirror. Worrying about how others see her, Estelle feels more comfortable with the mirror. Stripped of this materialistic object, she questions her existence entirely. That these characters were not were living their lives existentially is intertwined in the play. If Garcin and Estelle were living their lives existentially, they would have made decisions on their own. Garcin would have left the room without needing to be told that he is courageous. Estelle would have made judgment about herself without needing the mirror. In Waiting For Godot by Beckett, two men are waiting for Godot, a man that may or may not ever come. Vladimir and Estragon patiently wait for an indefinable amount of time because he never comes. Non-existentialist characteristics are revealed when Estragon suggests hanging themselves from the tree while they wait, but they decide to wait and see what Godot says...

...Do you know what it means to be courageous? Courage is a difficult word to define. Having courage could have different meanings amongst people. For instance courage could mean standing up for what’s right, what is the difference between bravery and courage, and facing your fears. According to the article, “An Act of Courage,” by Lauren Green in source one, it says Rosa Parks refused to give up her bus seat to a white man. Parks defended her beliefs. That’s an act of courage. Even though she knew the consequences she would face, that didn’t stop her from speaking her mind. Rosa was not a follower, but a leader. Her views and opinions supported equality. Bravery and courage seem similar, yet are unalike. Bravery has qualities of...

...David is the hero in the Bible that I identify with because of his characteristics. One of this regards his capacity to take responsibility for his faults. It is arguable that he committed many sins against God and his predecessor, Saul. People may have questioned him but this was not the case because he owned his offences (Gary, 2009). Further, he was passionate about God which is a pre-requisite for intimacy and becoming a worshiper. He learned the true and key heart values. Parallels between David and God and My Life In many of his walks of life, David had killed a vast number of Israelites’ foes and never took the success he got for granted or praise himself. He was ever humble both God and people he saves. At the same time, he was courageous. Almost all personalities of David remind us of ourselves reminds use of ourselves (Adrian, 2013). Christians are encouraged to...

...My personal leadership philosophy is to inspire, motivate, and bring out the best in my team. I believe this can be achieved if one harnesses the ability to showcase their integrity, I personally place great value in honesty, trust, and credibility. Additionally, I also believe to be a great leader needs to showcase good communication skills by delivering what they promise to build credibility and trust from those around them; as well as the ability to actively listen and focus on what is being said and take the time to form a reply with care and fore thought. with that being said, leaders should also possess a clear vision, be courageous, have integrity, humility and a clear focus. ...traits, courageous enough to take the people to a daring destination, yet humble enough to selflessly serve others on the journey. – Cheryl Bachelder A certain stigma is attached to those who serve others, one of submission, the servant is considered less than the one being served. This mindset is flawed. Serving others expresses respect, compassion, love. Consider those whom you have a great admiration for, or a great deal of love for, serving this person would not represent a sign of weakness, it does just the opposite it. Servant leaders apply these same thought processes to those who follow them by displaying empathy, compassion and respect. Are Your Shoulders Dirty? Pat...

...of building relationships. Followers and leaders need to have a process that helps refine who he or she is and what the objective is. The follower and leader could obtain a positive relationship by understanding his or her self and the behaviors of others (Chaleff, 2009). Organizations need the follower and leader to get along and work together for the wellness of the overall goals. Followers and leaders that cannot get along could potentially hurt the organization and other relationships that have been formed. Motives are used to help build relationships such as trust and loyalty. Trust and loyalty are motives to form relationships to see who the follower and leader can trust and who are loyal.
