In the Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen there is a lot of talk about a girl named Hannah about her Jewish Heritage.There are many opinions whether Hannah is appreciating her Jewish heritage or not. Although some people believe that Hannah is accepting her Jewish heritage, that's not the case.

Many people say that Hannah likes the clothes she wears. Those people say she really likes the clothes and wants to wear them all the time. They say that she is enjoying wearing the them . But really, Hannah doesn't like the clothes, she never has. Hannah is not accepting the clothes she wears. Gitl gave Hannah a dress to wear, she said under her breath”it's a rag, a shmatte”. This just shows that hannah is with disgust towards the clothes.
